Charlie Williams

Was watching a old ultimate 10 ball match from I think 2013. Charlie Williams VS CJ Wiley. I haven't heard anything of Charlie in quite a while just wondering what became of him. He was a great player, former mosconi team member. Anybody know?

I burst out laughing to myself every time I recall Lou's ingeniously creative CW-centric line about the bedtime "pillow turndown" service offered by the hotel where women tournament players were staying.

If I remember correctly, you didn't even need to give him a key to get into your room.

Know of a story where the owners son took a group of employees to a trade show and got everyone checked into their rooms and gave them their keys. Dumbass kept an extra key of the hot blonde and let him self in late one night.

It did not end well for him. Or his dads company.

Is CW still running his lame version of the 14.1 World Champ's? The WPA got all pissy and shit-canned it iirc.

He contracted for five championships with a greatly reduced added money amount required ($25k). He ended up not being able to meet that, so I think he only produced four official championships. He continued to try to call his event the "World Championship" but the WPA objected and at least sometimes Charlie retreated to "World Tournament". I believe the last event was about 2018 in a sports bar in Florida. The prize funds were something of a mystery.

I think they tried to do something virtual during the pandemic (like 2020 or 2021), but it just collapsed. Like you had to send in a video of a high run or something for an entry fee (no, really). Online rants about WPA were swirling. Even recall they got a lawyer to bully the WPA about the "World Championship" title. Went nowhere (well, for Charlie. Easy payday for the lawyer.)

Also, Good Lord this forum forgets nothing lol.

Edit: All that said, the 14.1 events held in NJ at the Hyatt in New Brunswick were a lot of fun to attend.

Wasn't the first one at a Hilton with the rain coming through the ceiling? East Brunswick?
Yes - Hilton. I believe it was Hilton for both (or however many were held in New Brunswick) before they switched to the Clifton pool room (and then later, out of NJ entirely). My memory of the event is clearly a little fuzzy.

Pretty sure it was New Brunswick - but there's a number of commercial buildings around the area that surround the municipal boundary that might put the hotel in East Brunswick.

Edit: 2011 looks like it was at the Hyatt in NB - that was my first one. Maybe they were at the Hilton at one point, which is in EB.

I really wish Charlie Williams would have just moved on from the WPA stuff, renamed his tournament to something like the US National Championship and kept it going. I get why people do/did not like him, but at least he was giving us spectators a yearly 14.1 tournament added onto the calendar.

Charlie is no longer involved with pool, but he came to the 2021 BCA Hall of Fame induction of his close friend Thorsten Hofmann. I was pleased to have had the opportunity to say hello.

The first 6 of Charlie's events were held in New Jersey (see below), then they went to New York.

2006-2008 -- Hilton, East Brunswick
2009 -- Comet Billiards, Parsippany
2010 -- Breakers Billiards, Clifton
2011 -- Hyatt Regency, New Brunswick

Yes, that was the 2006 version. They had to have buckets strategically placed in the tournament room. Proof that you can't plan for everything.

Which was the year Jasmin and Busty got 3rd? I was at that one. I enjoyed watching the matches.

Online and in-person is now sometimes mixed up for me. But I remember Siegel's match time was changed too, and he was pissed. He forfeited his match even though he was in the arena right at the start of the "new time". But he was there to unwind because he (originally had) 2 hrs until his next match. So he forfeited. All the times were butchered that year.

That was just a special request mix up. One of the players called the hotel and wanted buckets for pockets. Instead they got buckets. It was just a case of bad cellular.
