Chemically enhanced......found this odd bc...

One of the pills that the players would take was the meds for narcalepsy. I don't even know how to spell it. These guys all played well but their social lives and marriages all went to crap. Once there was no pills they couldn't play.

Desoxyn was the name of those pills. To get them you need a long form triple copy prescription. They are not easy to get like they once were, very easy to abuse.

Not exactly the same thing but I take a medication for ADHD and I found that it improved my game almost instantly in terms of focus. One could argue this is the same thing.

Lots of top players are on a wide assortment of dope. If it makes them play better it is their choice but there are also consequences with it.

Alcohol is a drug...

Cocaine, pot and speed was the drug of choice of many pool players in the 70s 80s 90s, now it is pain pills!

And alcohol of course!

I found it interesting that no other poster mentioned alcohol...

I guess for those whose drug of choice is alcohol, alcohol is not a drug..

Well, it is, and a very powerful one.

I know there are tons of amateurs who swear they play better on alcohol, but for most I think they never really gave playing sober a try, or they think they're playing better just because they're beating weak competition. (I made quite a few $ playing drunk in the '60s, until I started playing real competition.)

I also know there are a few pros who like to drink too, but they're the exception that proves the rule...

In my experience, alcohiol does not do what dope dues.

I do know a few guys who can't play without alcohol in their systems, but they are such alcoholics that they need it to do anything...it just brings them back to normal.

One dope fan told me that he saw rails that the balls rolled on when he was all lit up. How powerful is that?

When I was finishing up my graduate work I took a drug called Modafinil that is given to pilots to stay awake and supposedly has all sorts of performance enhancing properties. I was interested in playing pool while on it but never had the chance. Thing is, even if something works, it usually works great the first time, then every subsequent time it doesn't work as well or there are drawback, so it never pays off.

Alcohol does not work for me. Any amount makes me slightly lose my touch which just annoys me.

Many of the biggest gambling scores were a result of someone being "on" something

I'm assuming you're talking about Ben Tubbs, who is a close friend of CJ's. He's seen plenty, and I wouldn't discredit most of what he says. I'm sure he has 1st hand knowledge of various gambling stories/sets that were played in and around Dallas in the 90's.

Staying on topic with "chemicals," we saw a guy a few weeks ago that was down against a friend of mine. He literally walks into the bathroom for about 10 secs, and walks out wiping his nose. He then proceeds to play lights out and can't sit still at all. It's just one of those things that makes you go hmm...

Yes, Ben and I have been friends for over 30 years now, I've not seen him drink much in all that time. Drugs and alcohol were once more prevalent in the earlier years of pool. I don't think many of the champion players drink or do much of anything anymore. Maybe that's why there's no more gambling. ;) Many of the biggest gambling scores were a result of someone being "on" something and couldn't quit....their "nose was open".

I'm one of the lucky ones, and been alcohol and drug free for years, and have seen what it does to people since I'm in the bar business. It can be a brutal way of life, there's so much more to do when you have a "clear head". 'The Game is the Teacher'

lol I know it's only two letters but the typos in this sentence made me crack up a little. Like you were actually half in the bag.
had to read it 2x to see what you meant!

and in all my years working outside of the pool room, not once have i worked buzzed...or droink!

The US military has looked at speed and speed like substances for enhanced performance from soldiers and pilots. Recently products like Provigil and Nuvigil have been tested for the same result by them, these drugs wake up the user without the rush of speed.

A couple of years ago the VA put a buddy of mine on Adderall for ADHD. He said once he got the script and opened the bottle he recognized what was in it.... He had been given it dozens of times while in Iraq. He said every time they were going into close quarters, dor-to-door combat like in Fallujah, they're CO rounded them up and they were all given pills....

Speed has been used in military engagements since WWII.... That is precisely how the Germans were able to pull off the Blitzkreig from 1939-1941, methamphetimines.

I'm suprised people didn't mention adderall. As far as I can tell, it seems extremely common in pool circles. It is intended for ADHD and Narcolepsy. Apparently the effect of a normal dose is extreme focus and concentration. Since many people have legit prescriptions for this and take it every day, it is hard to imagine that it is TOO horrible for you. Assuming, of course, that you follow the recommended dose and schedule.

I have personally had some 5 hour energy at tournaments. I like it a lot unfortunately. It gives me the feeling that my brain is "switched on". I have terrible sleeping and eating habits. It is very common for me to get to a tournament without having eaten a bite of food all day long. Now for me, a good sleep and a steady healthy diet throughout the day is the best formula. But for those times when I fail at that, the 5 hour energy really helps me a lot. I usually drink 1/2 of one, and like 4 hours later the other half. Sometimes I drink a whole one. I think 1 and a half is the most I ever had. I played some *amazing* 9 ball lol! I am worried that I will feel like I can't play without it. That hasn't happened yet, but the concern is in my mind.

Anyone else drink that stuff? BTW, the pink grapefruit lemonade is very good and helps support breast cancer.

A champion once told me during a dissertation on drugs and pool "Doctors and pharmacisist will try to tell you that Desoxyn is made for people with narcolepsy.... THAT'S BS!!! Desoxyn was made for pool players!!!". He said you could have been up for 36 hours playing someone and start getting tired, take a 30mg Desoxin and 15 minutes later feel like you had 10 hours of sleep, took a shower, and the pockets looked like you were shooting into 5 gallon buckets... They came in 15 & 30mg dosages and I have been told by several that the 15's sucked and only the 30's were worth having.

I know of one champion that couldn't play without them and just gave up pool altogether... Pretty sad, but its the truth....

I bet you have seen a lot of it, being on the road and all. I saw tons of it in my small town of Hannibal MO. (I imagine you came across plenty of it when you were in Hannibal and Quincy as well!)

I think there are a lot of very good players that do it thinking that they can get a edge on the other guy. Sometimes I imagine it does help, but in the long run they always end up worse off because of it. It's good to see you never fell into that trap CJ, what a horrible way to end up.

But I will say this, in the 80's and 90's when a bunch of them was doing coke, the money was flowing like water. Gambling was at a all time high. No matter what your speed you could always get a game.

Now I think everyone is just staying home and getting high. As for me, I'm drug free except for what the doc gives me and I rarely use that anymore.
