China Open

China Open is about to start, as the second tournament of the WPA Tour 2009.

The field is a lot better than the Philippine Open, but still without players such as Efren Reyes, Fransisco Bustamante, Alex Pagulayan, Ronato Alcano, Dennis Orcullo, Roberto Gomez, Warren Kiamco, Radalfo Luat and Lee Van Corteza.

Isn't about time the WPA make some serious efforts in trying to solve the situation in the Philippines?

Now these players are not allowed to play China Open either, because of this "war" going on.

China Open is one of the "majors" in 2009, but when WPA doesn't do anything/enough to solve the situation in the Philippines, I will not support the tournament by checking updates, visit website, look at brackets etc.

It will be my small, private and quietly boycott of this event, showing my support to the Filipino players who deserve to be in the field.

When a large percentage of the top 20 best players of the world choose NOT to join big payday-tournaments (in Philippines), people should start wondering why and ask questions. These players are not rich, and most of them would cash good in these tournaments, yet they choose to stay away because of Yen Makabenta, BSCP and Raya Sports.

As some might think, they are not forced to "boycott" events like this by their managers, because they could simply just switch side, like Manalo and Gabica have done (3 times now). Yen Makabenta would love to have those players with him, because it would get more attention in the press, attracts sponsors and fill the stands on Raya events. It is the players choice not to join, and the WPA should start digging into this situation...

Well said Roy, I'm with you. I don't care who wins. It's just another world tournament that isn't one. Johnnyt

I really wish Matchroom sports would bring back the world 9 ball championships. Best tournament ever!, so exciting to watch. Every great player is there.

Can WPA be replace?

What gives them the authority to do what they do anyway? Were they blessed by some government or Olympic council or something that says, "Yup, that is it. Their word is law." etc etc

I think maybe the council in Taiwan should become "WPA". When i comes to tournaments, players, or even promoting the sport they seems so passionate about it!

Roy, I certainly agree with the sentiment of your post, but wonder what you would have WPA do in this situation? What's going on in the Philippines is, essentially, a civil war, and, in the last 100 years, presiding over civil wars is not what world organizations have done best.

I see nothing obvious about how WPA should deal with the problems at hand.

I always wondered who put them in charge of the WORLD of POOL. The WPA is a joke IMO. As far as the players that are not playing...well you can't help a country that won't help themselves. Johnnyt

Scoop ?

WPA is a joke, they can't even put Pool in the Olympics.

 Don't take me wrong, I wouldn't try to defend the WPA (I don't care), but I guess that introducing a new sport in Olympics is a really tough thing to do.

For your information this event will take place next month in Taipei, perhaps it is a first step :

Despite the internal problems with the Phillipine players the China tournament is a good venue for the womens pool.

Orcollo gets timely tuneup for Qatar crown defense
Updated June 20, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Former world No.1 Dennis Orcollo will use the JBETpoker.net Scotch Doubles All-Star Challenge as his final tune up before flying to the Middle East to defend his title in the Qatar International 9-Ball Championship beginning on June 30 in Doha.

“I’m happy to have this opportunity to play in this kind of tournament before I go to Qatar,” said Orcollo, who will team up with former Asian Games gold medalist Gandy Valle to represent the star-studded Bugsy Promotions in the four-way tag-team competition presented by JBETpoker.net in cooperation with the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines.

The event serves as the main undercard of the much-anticipated Challenge of the Legend: The Maestro vs the Volcano a one-on-one 15-ball rotation match between pool icon Efren “Bata” Reyes and fellow former double world champion Ronnie Alcano slated on June 25 and 26 at the Annex building of SM North Edsa in Quezon City.

“I want to have a winning momentum when I go to Qatar, and with Yang-yang (Valle) as my partner, I’m very confident that we will beat the other teams and win the tournament,” added Orcollo, who had just won the 2009 Predator International 10-Ball Championship last month in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Besides the Bugsy boys, three other teams will compete in the event also sponsored by Sen. Manny Villar’s Villards: Tulong sa Pagsulong ng Philippine Sports and Camella Communities, and sanctioned by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines.

Former world champion Alex Pagulayan will join forces with Rodolfo Luat in carrying the flag of Puyat Sports, while Lee Van Corteza and Warren Kiamco will represent the Negros Billiards Stable and tandem of Ramil Gallego and Antonio Lining will play for the BMPAP Selection.

Villar, the foremost Philippine billiards godfather, will be the guest of honor and will hit the ceremonial break of the event, which will be aired live on ABS-CBN’s Studio 23 from 2 to 6 p.m. The national anthem will be sung by Ava of the Pretty Young Thing (PYT).
