CJ WIley Playing John Schmidt

Terry,

You are right, most people live check to check, but as far as hobbies go, some people collect clothing or shoes. I know that I do (the shoes, not clothing).

In the world of shoe collecting $300 is a small small price to pay for a pair of shoes that you like or that are limited editions/runs.

Who lives check to check anymore? I thought that went out of style a couple of years ago.

I'm not going to take up a lot of time and respond to all the spears thrown at The Woim. I probably deserve it, to some extent, for not being a little more clear.

I didn't want to come across as expecting everyone to dress up in nice suits and silk ties (although it was good enough for Jackie Gleason in "The Hustler" and Irving Crane wore tux with tails in his 150 ball run in the 1966 U.S. Open) but upscale golf polo shirts (no less than $45 each should be mandatory for televised events).

Another poster mentioned the International Challenge of Champions which ESPN televised last night. I DVR'd all three hours to watch at my leisure. But did you guys notice how clean and well-presented Johnny Archer looks? The guys makes the most of his appearance. He's not a pretty boy, but he's got a nice goatee (which The Woim thinks looks sharp) and he wears a black shirt with black pants and a belt with a bronze buckle. He was also wearing nice shoes (I can tell you, they probably cost him $65) his shoes had rubber soles but he looked good and he conducted himself with class.

Johnny Archer has the kind of class while playing pool and while watching his oppenent that The Woim can't help but admire.

Lee Van Corteza is a not only a phenomenal pool player (I know that guy can play even better than we saw last night) but is also a nice clean cut kid who dresses in a nice manner and was wearing better shoes than Johnny Archer. Both of these guys are excellent representatives of our precious sport.

The Woim has a thing for shoes... ;)

To give a personal example, one of my two teachers always wore dress shirts and nice dress slacks and to top it off he always wore shoes that looked like the saddle shoes (spectator shoes) from the 1920's with a black boat with white or beige tongue and upper. He also always carried a gold chalk holder. Do you guys know why he dressed like this? Because Ralph Greenleaf was his hero and he wanted to emulate him! Some my dismiss that as some form of mental illness but The Woim calls that respect!

Billy Incardona, who said I should be more respectful (?? ??) is a living legend in the pool room, but he remembers when players dressed better. I've never seen Luther Lassiter play nine ball except when wearing a tuxedo! ;)

An image of class That The Woim would like to share is Keith McCready playing the role of Grady Seasons. This is, or should be, a role model for big money players and today's tournament players. The guy looked guy and had a twinkle in his eye! :o

As for shoes, I flat out won't buy a pair that's under $225. Nope. It's the shoe equivalent of Cuetech cues. I mean, even Meucci's are pretty.

To all you guys who don't understand, go to an upscale shoe store and try on a pair of Aldens, or Allen-Edmunds or, if you live in NYC, go try on a pair of Crockett & Jones! These shoes will change your mind. And I'm not talking about custom made shoes, these three shoe brands are the Joss and Schon of the shoe world (although I think Schon is just a gimmicky stick but some swear by them.)

Dress right guys, not for bigger endorsements but to show that you have respect for yourselves and respect for the parlor room board game known as pool...

 you should start up a new pool league! everyone has to be wearing a $2k suit (not counting shoes).you could drink vintage wine and smoke cuban cigars during matches....................personally when i play you could have on some high heel flip-flops and a green thong but all im worried about is how im going to get out!

BUt, will Crockett & Jones help you pocket balls? My 479 Reboks have done wonders for mine.

I won $150.00 yesterday playing $50 1-pocket and the offers have me over-whelmed.

just think what you could have done in those crockett & jones. I might want some of that action:)

Ironman, congrats on winning $150 yesterday. Now, just scrounge up another $200-$250 and you'll have enough for the Crockett & Jones :p

These are high end shoes guys. Try a pair on, you'll know then what I'm talking about! ;)

What's the point of pocketing balls if you don't also look good? Dress up and pocket balls and you'll be quite the gentleman and the ladies will look at you with amorous admiration, but if you insist on dressing like a basketball player and wearing reeboks, even the pool hall owner will keep checking his pocket to make sure you didn't steal his wallet :p

woim,

Your attempt to inject "class" into this discussion comes off as juvenile to those that feel you are playing the elitist card. To knock JS about his appearance, advances the premise your "fashion" posts are ignorant.

I own very expensive clothes, surely nowhere near your listed "price range". I routinely pay $500 A shoe. Have custom made ascot chang dress shirts that start at $500, etc. My point is that when I play pool I choose to put comfort over appearance. Sure its important to look presentable, but its secondary to comfort. I sure don't want to get spilled on, or stain a $5000 suit with blue chalk. I'd even venture to say that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference, outside of the very limited brands you like, what anyone is wearing.

As far as cues, john up until 3 weeks ago, played with a 4k custom bobby hunter. That's not good enough??? LOL.

Guys are gambling to support themselves. To suggest john "blow" his winnings on unnecessary luxury items just proves that you are an......

Rg

Btw, all the players at the challenge of champions are supplied the sweater they must compete in

NYC Dude,

Johnny Archer wasn't wearing a sweater, he was wearing a black long sleeved shirt. Lee Van Corteza was wearing a different colored shirt. Only Neils Feijan was wearing the sweater. All three were presentable with Johnny first and Lee second (in appearance ;) ).

None of this is intended to be elitist but quite trying to kid me here - this is a forum where everybody has at least three pool cues! We can afford shoes, if we choose.

The Woim isn't saying that everyone needs to dress in this manner. Enjoy the game of pool in any manner you choose, it's none of my business anyway.

Yours Truly,
The Woim

And, as far as I can tell, none of my comments were directed to John Schmidt. So, I'm happy to hear that he adds dignity to the game by playing with a nice Bobby Hunter cue. What does John use now?

The Woim

I meant to say sweaters AND shirts are supplied by the Mohegan sun. You get to pick color and style, but return it when ur done.

And.... Yes your comments were directed at john. You said that he should spend x amount of money on clothes and a cue.

Woim, just curious, if your such the in vogue guy, what's the most you have spent on any one piece of clothing, a suit, coat, etc.

Rg

I bought an overcoat for $1200 - just once! My wife wasn't happy :( I wouldn't describe myself as "in vogue" or into any metrosexual quasi-gay style of dress.

On another note, everyone keeps talking about how well dressed John Schmidt is. Ok, I guess compared to Danny Basavich he is. But there's no crime in stepping up and wearing your nicest golfing clothes. That was, after all, John's first and true love! ;)

Yours Very Truly,

The Woim

Mr. Terry Ardeno,

If the administrator of this website thought I was "Fast Larry" I would be banned. Enough is enough with the childishness, guys. The administrator can contact me at any time to assure himself that I'm not "Fast Larry".

I should research Fast Larry and read his posts, since too many are accusing me of being Fast Larry.

You can go to John Lobb in London and blow 3 dimes on a pair of shoes. A $500 pair of shoes is entry level these days for good shoes. Just like cues you can blow $8000 easy on a Szam or upto $80,000 we all know that here, most people think a cue costs less than $100 and we here all know that isnt a good shaft, Shoes are the same way anything handmade with great leather from Italy not China is going to cost alot of $$$$. Everything you can think of there is a spot somewhere that you can empty out alot of $$$ on $3000 for kitchen knives, a million dollar car, $150 silk socks etc. Its all there when your ready to step up. or a $50,000,000 picture from picasso to hang in the libary of a $70,000,000 mansion. $45,000,000 for a jet like Oprah has to fly to hawaii in on the weekends using $75,000 in fuel. Think people in that world are going to sweat $5000 on a pair of shoes? its all relitative, however I like to play barefoot. Also I dress terrible I hate cloths.

Man, I'm glad I live in Oregon. I mean, the state's richest man, a guy named Phil Knight, wears a pair of Nike shoes wherever he goes.

Fast Larry uses many 'identities' to post online, as he has been banned from EVERY board/Forum with that capability.
Here is a good place to start your research (and just a FEW of his identities)

Fatboy,

Congratulations on being aware of Lobb of London, and $500 for a pair of shoes is fairly entry level (at the exotic high end)... But the point of my post was improving the dignity of our game.

Dress and wear what you want, it's your own contribution to this game we all love so much!

Dear TheWoim

If you're not Fast Larry, then you must be related to him in some way. Your posts come across the same way Larry's do, and that's not a good thing on any forum, no matter of its about pipes, cigars, pool, or tiddly winks. I don't really have a problem with what you say, its just how you say it sometimes. BTW, the statement where you said "call me and I'll prove I'm not Fast Larry" ... that's a typical Fast Larry response. So if you're not Fast Larry, then it sure is scary to think there's another guy out there that's just like him. JMO.
