Classless Earl Strickland

While I can agree with some of your sentiments regarding his behaviors not being beneficial to himself or the game, referring to Earl as a "loser" is not any different than the jackasses that egg him on because they think its entertaining.

You seem to be a reasonably intelligent person, do yourself a favor and read up about mental illness and the stigmas about mental illness. Please stop contributing to those stigmas by propagating words like "loser" when referring to someone that is truly mentally ill.

I will accept you invitation to read up on the subject a little more.

Again, I don't know him personally, but from what I've read and heard he only acts like this while playing pool- so I don't know if you'd really call that a mental illness. It seems too context specific. Really the only people that would qualified to know are the people closest to him and a trained professional to carefully analyze his psyche. Otherwise we all are just speculating.

Perhaps it is his preference to play the 'heel'. It seems to fit especially with tableside fan interaction.

ive known earl since he was a kid and the person everybody desribes isnt the earl ive known. case in point . right before he moved to ny he came to a shithole poolrom in martinsville va to do an exhibition. only handful of people were there but earl put on a whale of a show with stories and serious skill trick shots. ( crazy force follow shots that not many champions can execute). Im much older than earl and he always acknowledges me from the old scufflin days and has a kind word. If all u guys knew the real earl and not the actor you would understand. not to mention the players hes influenced over the years with his style of play. when earl is in gear its like poetry in motion. watch shanes stroke and you will see almost a carbon copy of earl all the way down to his stance. just my two cents from an old scuffler.

There are (NO) top players today that didn't learn a tremendous amount from Earl or they wouldn't be top players at all. Love him or hate him he was like watching Zeus!!!

Every once in a while I go back to watching that video of a young Earl playing Mizerak 9 ball on those awful mustard color tables in Vegas, I believe. Earl was the Pearl.

I've met him many times over many years, including spending almost two weeks with him, during the Camel Pro Exhibition Series in the early 90's. Earl is definitely an okay guy when he's not at the pool table. Like many have said, his skills on the table are on a par with the best on earth (when he is "on").

How many posters, save Jay, have even met Earl?

That does not include rail birds. Just curious.

Chuck-
Thank you for posting this. You are exactly on the money.
A little knowledge goes well with a little compassion.

They use to say the same things -- and worse -- about Alex Higgins.

When he passed, all those naysayers grieved the loss of a great one.

Shame on this thread!
Yes!!

1) Earl IS mentally ill. If Earl isn't nuts then Charlie Manson was a normal guy.
2) I'd love to see somebody like Daz just totally kick his ass. Nick E. might leave him in a pile as well. Man, I'd be loving that.
3) Earl has done more to tear down pool than anybody else in the last twenty-five years. A complete role model for being a scumbag.

That about covers it.
Yeah 5 foot nothing Daz ain't kicking anybody's ass brother. Old Earl would embarrass him!

Lucky for you that Earl in now past his prime cuz guys like Daz & Nick would've need the 6 from Earl (and wouldn't have liked it)
Preaching the truth!

One thing for sure. He keeps the gossipers in this post gossiping. wow. 78 posts on a tired subject. At one time he was without equal and that is indisputable.
Fact.

There are (NO) top players today that didn't learn a tremendous amount from Earl or they wouldn't be top players at all. Love him or hate him he was like watching Zeus!!!
Exactly!

Mental Illness my A$$! That's just an excuse often used by narcissists, who never accept blame for their selfish choices of action. Narcissistic tendencies are usually exacerbated by fame.

OJ is a good example. A very charming and polite man to most he met, as he thrived off being seen as a great guy. But he couldn't care less about others, other than them blowing up his bubble.

WOW Colin......Your amateur diagnosis is wrong. I speak from my own personal knowledge and experience with mental illness when I say that your opinion is very far from fact or reality.

Ill say the same to you as I did to Stu, please do yourself a favor and read up on mental illness and the stigmas of mental illness. It should prove to be an eye opener for you.

Im sorry, but I advocate for mental illness awareness. It truly bothers me deeply when I see stuff like this. :frown:

Excuse me Chuck, but what makes you an expert on mental illness? I find it interesting that Earl only exhibits this abhorrent behavior when playing a pool match, kind of situation specific. This would indicate that he does have control over his behavior. I don't profess to be an expert on mental illness, but one could logically assess that Earl is not mentally ill, but rather somehow obsessed when playing pool for whatever reason(s).

I will only add this. When Earl has been warned with penalties for his behavior he has been able to tone it down dramatically. This is from my personal experience with him.

Maybe your perspectives would change if you studied the writings of Thomas Szasz instead of the politically correct leftish gibberish that passes for psychology today.

And of course, if only warning him with penalties does the trick, then in reality, Earl should NEVER have had a problem in a tournament, at any time, right ? You warn him, boom, back to normal, and you play on. How has that worked out over the last 30 years? Not so well, correct ?

Of course, you know symptoms can trigger when more stressed. Do you think, maybe, just maybe, that playing in professional pool tournaments trying to earn a living and pay the rent can be one of those situations. Jay, you have it out for Earl, we know it, but you must stop dismissing the obvious.
