Clausing model 5914 metal lathe - $4500

Something to consider when pondering the price of a piece of machinery, in this case a lathe.
I purchased a used lathe 20-25 yrs ago. I use this lathe everyday, it's my workhorse.
To date, this lathe has made me well over 1/4 million dollars.
Would it matter if I paid $2,000 or $5,000 for that used lathe?

The lathe being offered is a 'cream-puff', it's probably just broke-in. Should last a CM several lifetimes.
It may seem at first glance to be priced a bit high, particularly when compared to others of the same model.
The price of a used lathe is almost irrelevant, it's the condition that matters.
If it's worn-out to begin with, it's not going to get better by itself. It's going to cost you after the sale.
In reality, the aforementioned Clausing is a steal.
With that lathe you could make 1/4 mill and when you sold it, you'd get back every penny you paid for it.
I know I would. I'm not going to tell you to not negotiate but with this lathe, it's not necessary.

Yes, b/c for $1500 or so you can switch to VFD.

I have an even older model 5914 Clausing that I paid $1000 for about 20 yrs. ago. It came with a Jacobs chuck with the rubber/steel spring collets and you can lay your arm on the chuck while running and not worry about getting chewed up.

Replace the 3 phase with single phase motor and went to work. I have replace the drive motor 2 times and switches 3 times, a couple of drive belts and it still runs good. Clausing still has parts for these lathes.

Don't know if it is worth the $4500 but it is well worth making an offer if it is in good shape as a cue maker will never wear it out.

I spoke with the gentleman on the phone yesterday. He's firm on the price. Makes me glad I bought the one I did. Better price and way closer to my house.

That is cheap for that lathe. For what we do, if you switch it over to VFD it will run 50 years with minimal maintenance and remain dead accurate all the time.

I think if he is the original owner and can provide a receipt, the price may be warranted. Otherwise, I think he's asking double what it's worth. IMO:)
