Im sure this topic has been done to death but damn it i need to vent!!!

Tonight at league (APA 9 Ball) i was playing a make-up match against a SL5 (im a 6 :p) I win the lag for the first break. Now i know my break just like the rest of you so when i crushed the one ball and the head of the rack cracked apart instead of exploding i knew i got a mud rack. Mind you im not that upset abu tit because its league and most of the mud racks you get are done on accident so i let it go.

Next rack im up to break again and i check the rack. What do you know.... The one is barely touching one side of the next two balls so i politely ask the guy to please tighten up the rack. So he gets all upset and starts *****ing about the rack (WHATS WRONG WITH IT!!
uhoh.gif
) I show him whats wrong with it and he say nothing is wrong with it. Once again i took it with a smile and just agreed with him to avoid a conflict. At this point i went from the happy go lucky friendly league guy to somebody that shows no mercy and doesnt want you to gain 10 points!!! or basically a guy that whats to kick your ass!! With THE SMILE of course :)

I line up on the left side rail (side the one ball is touching most) and hit a cut break with a medium power break. I made a wing ball and had shape on the rest of the rack and ran out. So he's racking murming to himself (i love that btw ;))

Next rack same thing. This time around i had had enough and confronted him and told him that the room is wicked humid and the rack just aint holding. You see the whole time i guess he thought i was calling him a cheater (im sure he goes to the defense often due to this situation) but really the balls where tough to rack. At least when he racked em because i didnt have a problem get em to sit properly. All in all i won but i just felt like he was extremely difficult to deal with. I mean why? Its just league of heavens sakes!!!

Oh not to brag but the night did end on a positive note after this fiasco. I still had to play my scheduled match this week so they pitted my against a SL7 and as you already now im a SL6. Well lets just say i caught a gear against this poor fella and won my match 46-14 in 8 INNINGS!!!!! Broke and ran two racks TWICE with a few other scattered games in between!! I went home with a BIG smile and made enough team points for use to pull us to victory!!

Good Times :D

Have you watched Joe Tuckers video on racking secrets by chance? I used to have the same problem but now I see a bad rack as a good opportunity. Glad you beat him, so people feel that they have to have a unfair advantage to compete but you know what, to have cheated and still lost they must feel like a bigger looser than if they had just lost honest!

I'd make him re-rack over and over until you like the rack. If he gets upset, that's his problem, it's in the rules. You're in his head now and that's to your advantage. I only keep a loose rack if the balls behind the nine are loose. Grip it and rip it and the nine gets moving!

I suggest the same plus the book "The Great Break Shot".

It has the book by Joe Tucker included.

Personally, I blame it on the rules. I would have asked the guy if he minded if I rack my own.

then they will cry about you gaff racking.....make em fix it, thats been a rule for i don't know FOREVER.

But worrying about the rack in alot of leagues and bars can get extremely aggravating b/c imop the average pool player don't rack worth a sh*t.

If balls roll they either pound them into the table or move the rack 3 feet to get it to stick....

So getting the racking secrets books and learning that stuff is much more beneficial to relieve your own headaches, than to try and get a banger to give you a good rack consistently.

Funny Bambu but i forgot to mention i did ask their captian abut rackin your own and he didnt mind so i think from now on i will just rack my own. If my opponent wants to check my rack i wouldnt have a problem with it.

I'm going to ask my league operator if there's a reason we can't use the magic rack or something like that on tables that just wont rack properly... I don't play in the APA, but our city-bar league is modeled after it, so... Of course, I haven't tried the magic rack yet, should be here thursday or friday, but I'm hoping...

Rack your own would get rid of those problems real fast.

some tables just don't rack... the racks - especially in unkept bars - are lose, bent, twisted and coupled with bad cloth, dirty balls... i'm not convinved even the magic rack could handle them. lol

I take the time to check every rack and explain what is wrong to my opponent. I also have them rerack if the balls behind the nine are loose. I tell em you don't want me to win a cheap game.

I use the rack em rite template on our leagues bar tables. Perfect rack every time in all conditions. Trust me these tables need work.

A lot of bad players get pissed when you check the rack on them. It's happened to me numerous times in APA 9-ball. They think you're calling them out for dishonesty or that you're an asshole for being too picky. The SL5 and below players know not what they do.

On a kind of amusing side note, I have an SL2 teammate in 9-ball who checks the rack every time she breaks even though she can barely get 4 balls to hit the rail when she breaks. She takes her break very seriously.

You could carry a True Rack. They fit in most cases with a long pocket and they rack great.

I see what you're saying but in league, tourney or cash games I'll take a nine on the snap any time I can get it. Once they give it away a few times maybe they'll learn how to rack. Let em know why it was happening after the match is over.

Rack your own is an awesome solution...

Sounds like the guy you were playing was a banger, and didn't have a clue...

In the BCA leagues, and in Vegas, the player racks his own balls. The opponent has the right to inspect the rack if they like, but for the most part the players simply rack and break. As far as my own personal experiences, in league and Vegas, I've only seen one person (from the opposing team) look at one of my teammates racks.

Some of the other benefits to 'racking your own' are :
A) When you're in league, and the person you're playing is out at the bar getting a drink, having a smoke, whatever..., you rack your own balls, and the majority of the time the opposing team's player(s) will offer the choice to break, and they will watch until that player gets back to the room.
B) It seems to have sped things up a bit. If you have teams that don't lollygag and don't have to be hunted down when it's time for them to play, then things progress considerably faster, and the night finishes a little earlier. We have an unwritten rule on our team : You wanna play Quick Draw, or the Touchscreen video games, or Golden Tee Golf, or go out to have a cigarette, all that's fine. But when it's your turn to play, you better be at the table ready to play. Know when it's your turn to shoot. It's that simple.
C) Most of the time, the player who is racking AND breaking is ready for thier turn. It's then the opposing team's responsibility (captain or otherwise) to make sure the player that's up is ready to play. If a team or player wants to decide to use the "stalling" technique (he had to move his car, he had to go down to the ATM, etc.), it becomes apparent pretty quick. C'mon, it's not a surprise that tonight's league night. When that happens (and it's only come to that point once), you put that player AND the team on notice. Go find that guy when the player BEFORE him is up, or we'll consider that guy's game a forfeit if he's not here when we rack the balls.
D) On a league (at least in BCA), at any given time, there's going to be at least ONE player from each team watching the games, and the majority of the time the entire team(s) are watching. To try to manipulate the rack in your favor, in front of at least two other sets of eyes besides yours and your opponent's, is insane. I'm sure there's a handful of bangers that have tried, and been subsequently 'called out' by members of the opposing team.

And let's face it, most of us take pride when we rack 'em up. Who in thier right mind is gonna give themselves a 'gaff rack' ??

Again, sounds like the guy you were playing was a banger, and didn't have a clue. I've played a few of those in local tournaments, and they get all pissed off when you ask for a re-rack. I always throw it back at 'em. "Ok, smartass, would YOU break this rack ?" Strangely, they seem to be able to come up with a tight rack after that sentence.
