Kudo's to Danny Harriman. It is really a great accomplishment to win the Maryland 14.1 tournament TWO YEARS IN A ROW!!

For those that were not fortunate enough to attend, you need to understand that it was an extremely tough field. To win twice is no fluke; and is something Danny should be truly proud to put on his resume.

I believe that Danny has been working, and has not had any time for significant pool for quite some time. It makes his victory even more remarkable. To go into that field without preparation and then still take it down is really something in my opinion. He has a great love for the game, and behaved as a champion throughout the event.

Also thanks to Rick and Cindy the owners. They provided a tremendous venue. The equipment was great (almost all of the tables were worked on and re-covered the 2 days before the tournament). Whoever was complaining about the conditions prior to the tournament was WAY off base. It is a public establishment, and casual players do not always treat the tables well - Rick made it all super-nice for the tourney. Big Daddy's is WAY nicer than anything in Indy. A player who could complain about the conditions there has other agendas.

Endless congrats to Mr. Harriman for his 2nd win in a row against such a strong field. I was talking to a buddy of mine that attended the event and he said that he overheard Danny say that he has been helping a friend with their power washing business this summer. Sounds as if Mr. Harriman has been working more than playing.

From my friends perspective, the tournament appeared to be a success. He said there was a decent crowd of spectators and the tournament seemed to run smoothly. He had one suggestion for the event next yr - add a rule stating no cell phone usage while you're in a tournament match. Apparently one of the players received a phone call and answered their phone. From what I understand his opponent didn't say anything which is lucky for the guy on the phone. Had it been myself I would've said something to the guy. Due to a lack of courtesy, rules like this have to be made to protect the rest of the world that knows better.

Hopefully they'll have this event next year and I can plan a trip to go visit friends during that time frame so I can witness Mr. Harriman go for a hat trick. :thumbup2:

Great Sportsmanship

Danny Harriman was in a safety duel with Brian Deska and Brian took an intentional scratch and did not remember that Danny was on a scratch. Danny reminded him...if he didn't Brian would never have known it. The crowd applauded Danny for his sprortsmanship. I do as well!

Don,

Hope you had a good time. Watched the live stream of you playing till it went off the air. Perhaps next year is my year to play. Peter called and invited me. Still looking forward to meeting you. Did you get to meet or play Dan Heidrich? He also plays out of Classic in Rochester.

LW,
No, I didn't meet Dan. I had social obligations (meeting the family of my daughter's fiance - both sides of the family spent the weekend in Annapolis to get acquainted...I was absent a bit for the first day of the tourney), so did not get to spend ANY time socializing. My apologies to all of the AZB'ers that I slighted; just didn't have any time.

Don,

With all the contributions you've made to AZ, you never have to apologize for anything here!!!!!!

I also want to give my congratulations to Mr. Harriman. He has once again persevered through a very tough field to capture the title. I'm sorry I missed his stellar play in the semis and finals; sounds like a whole lotta balls were gettin' run.

I also want to congratulate Mr. Wilkie. Here is a guy who you would not expect to be a 14.1 specialist; he's young, likes to let out his stroke, and has made a name for himself in rotation games. But according to Peter Burrows (our fearless tournament director) Shaun told him that straight pool is the only real game as far as he's concerned. His dedication to it has become apparent. 2nd place in this field is quite an accomplishment, and it sounds like he'd have probably won the whole thing had Danny not run out on him.

Can't say enough about the room and the staff. The tables were recovered and playing great. I didn't see one ball roll off the whole day. How anyone could have a problem with this room, I'll never know. It was truly a great venue for such a prestigious tournament and we're lucky to have the dedication of Rick, Cindy, and Peter. Everything ran very smoothly on their end.

If I had a suggestion, it would be a minor one: to hold the final day's play on the Diamonds. These tables play tougher and I feel that top-flight 14.1 needs this slightly-tighter equipment. I played two matches on Sunday and in truth, I was lucky to even get a single shot in either game. This isn't to say the Brunswicks were super loose but when you're dealing with such talented players it's not ideal in my opinion. I know the crowd wants to see high runs but I'd just like to see us have to work really, really hard at it hahaha ;).

Anyway, had a great time as always. Thanks to everyone involved and can't wait til next year!

I only got to watch one match where Danny played. He was looking good. Glad to hear he won it. Congrats Danny!

I would have kicked your butt though. ;)

And thanks to whomever loaned those sunglasses for the camera.

ps: Danny doing the power wash thing is more than a casual thing. Pretty bad when a player of his caliber can only survive by taking such jobs, even if it is a decent job and the mutual friend he is working for is a pool player himself. Tom understands Danny's need to play.

I send out a big congrats as well !!!

My hat comes off as well for Wilkie, it was great to watch a grey performance by a younger rotation game player.... I look forward to seeing more of him in the future of 14.1 !

Congratulations to Danny on another great win - and to Shaun for a playing EXCEPTIONALLY well. I expected that Shaun would surprise a lot people. He has definitely put in the time and worked very hard. God rewards faithfulness and diligence, and these guys are living proof of that.

Congratulations to Danny Harriman...

...and to Steve K, whose sunglass fix made the tournament table visible. Right up there with Edison and Marconi, Steve. And they couldn't shoot a lick!

Congrats Danny on your fine win.

Thanks to everyone that played in this tournament and the great matches we saw.

Thank's to Rick and Cindy for hosting the tournament and thanks for the live streaming for those of us who couldn't make the trip this year.

SK,
I would like to put in my $.02 on Shaun's play. I was in the group with BOTH Danny and Shaun - played them both on the super tight Diamonds. Though I am not a great player, I have played almost exclusively with a LOT of old school straight pool players. Shaun's game is DEFINITELY a cut above the average 9-ball pro when it comes to straight pool knowledge (in my opinion). He really worked around the balls well, had nice touch, seemed to follow most accepted straight pool principles when possible. It would be a mistake to classify him with the straight shooters who have not studied the game.

I would also like to agree with Steve Lipsky that the final 16 matches should be played on the Diamonds. Even though I was quite ill, even I still felt I might be able to run out the match any time I got to the table on the Brunswicks (and that's just wrong...).

BIG DADDY'S MD 14.1 Championship / Thank you!!!!

Hi everyone!!!!!
Me and Cindy just wanted to say a few words to everyone. We had a great time and it seemed as if the tournament went perfectly!!
First off, we wanted to congradulate Danny Harriman for ANOTHER FIRST PLACE FINISH!!!! Also to Shaun Wilkie for a top notch finish too!! I hope all players and spectators had a wonderful time and can't wait for next year. Plus we wanted to say thanks to ALL THE PLAYERS THAT COMPETED. For the straight pool players in the area...we have a 14.1 league on Thursdays so, if you would like to watch Shaun or compete with Shaun in the league then stop by and sign up!! Again, Cindy and myself would like to say again thanks for the support of Big Daddy's. Also last but not least we wanted to say thanks again to Peter Burrows, Dave Nangle, Dan Warnick, Jesse Sewel and George Kirby!!!!! We really tried our hardest to make this a class act so come on 2011!!!!! lets get it on again!!! WE also wanted to thank everyone for the pictures taken!!!

I just got to say that I had the best $30.00 tuna sandwich I have ever had.It was so good I bought another one right after the first one for another $30.00 haha.Just kidding guys. The owners and regulars at big daddys are first class and worked very hard for this event to happen and as every year the room looked great and no complaints about the equipment.Oh by the way most people travel to the Baltimore area to eat crabs but they might start to go to your poolroom just for the incredible tuna sandwiches.

Willie: Shaun played in the World Straight Pool tournament last year and I saw him do the old Irving Crane safe-two rails and brush off the edge of the rack on the way back up. So he must be studying the game.

By the way, not meaning to steal his thread or anything.... Congratulations to DH for winning against a tough field two years in a row.

Thanks very much

First I would like to thank Peter Burrows plus Cindy and Rick also for organizing and graciously hosting such a fine tournament, also thanks for all the nice comments. I was happy with the way I played on the 2nd day, the Pool Room (Big Daddy's) had tables that don't roll off and great food. Some say the equip. was too forgiving, that would probably favor me as I have not been practicing much.;) So again thanks to everyone who helped make this event possible, it was nice to get to compete again at 14.1 and I am thankful to God for allowing it to be my turn on that particular day with a room full of Champions.

I hope to see more Straight Pool events in the near future as there are in Europe, I would like to extend a special thank you to anyone who assists in keeping this great sport (14.1) of ours alive.
