Coverage of mosconi matches in progress

Shane breaks trailing 4-3 and breaks dry, leaving no shot on the one. Appleton safety ineffective and Shane plays safe, but not well. Darren opts for a tough carom into the nine, missing it. Leave Shane kicking, but hangs the one while playing the kick safe.

Darren kicks in the one and can see the finsh line. it's over, 5-3.

Europe will begin day 2 with a 3-2 lead. Day one was exciting for sure. Thanks to all ten players for such a good show. Let's do it again tomorrow.

That table plays way too soft.

Are the pockets not 4.5" or is the combo of worn pockets, new cloth and super clean balls allowing the balls to scoot in even when they aren't hit great.

Never expected Shane to lose that one, but Darren played great and of course got the rolls.
Already team USA did better than 2013 so it's a win for Mark Wilson from here on out

Excellent show indeed. Can't wait for Day 2.

Best pool coverage and atmosphere by far!

Might have a drink each time Jerry makes the wrong call for the coming shot tomorrow. :D

Coming out of the day only down 3-2 is a win for the USA. It definitely hurts that Shane lost both of his matches but it goes to show that the team is much improved this year. I think Mark Wilson is looking like a genius with the addition of Mr 400 after how he played. Lets hope it stays this competitive all the way through so we can get to the final day of all singles matches.

I really don't care what the pockets measure, this table is playing comically loose!

Our old friend and frequent AZB poster Grady Matthews used to refer to pockets like these as "cavernous."

Interesting day. USA played tight early but still came out tied 2-2 with Shane up. I would have bet on Shane, but Darren played well.

3-2 Europe, on to day 2!

The brand new cloth has a lot to do with the balls dropping that normally wouldnt. Expect that to change as the table gets worn in.

Really bad days for Shane --- no question about it.

Racks played

Full team match 0-1
Teamed with Bergman 1-5
Against Appleton 3-5

Fifteen racks played and just 4 won for Shane.

Tomorrow is another day. Schmidt was the man of the day on Mosconi day one and special mention goes to Justin Hall, who also looked solid, and whose bank of the six ball after a Deuel mistake vs. World Cup of Pool champions Appleton and Boyes at 3-3 proved to be the match winner.

Grades for day one

John Schmidt A
Justin Hall B+
Corey Deuel C
Justin Bergman C-
Shane C-

Looking forward to seeing who brings it on day two.

First day and US already has the same amount of points as they did in all of last year's cup, and didn't have to rely on Shane at all. They really look like a team out there, instead of the usual group of individual players that they've been sending out there for the past few years.

I thought it was a great first day and it should be a great Mosconi Cup all the way. Both teams looked sharp and the competition level is ultra high. Only Corey had a few hiccups but I think he'll be all right. I was very pleased about the way Justin H. and Justin B. handled themselves. They are both up to the task.

I particularly enjoyed the Schmidt-Gray match, two players with something to prove. Both played excellent pool and John looked strong in winning. 3-2 down on day one means little right now, other than it's damn close.

Also I thought Ken and Nigel handled the crowd exceedingly well. They definitely are a rowdy bunch, almost all with a beer in their hands . The coverage by SkySports is first rate and the commentary is good, just the right amount of talking and being quiet. All four coms are pros. Yes Jerry miscalled a few but let me tell you it's hard to see the table from their booth and you must rely on small monitors. Jerry is an excellent commentator! Phil Yates has stepped it up a speed as well. He seems to be much better prepared than he was for the World Cup.

I like Shane in his leadership role. He's playing well right now and I expect him to win his share this week. I will be flying tomorrow to Manila so I will miss day two, so please tell me all about it. Thanks :D

Not enough time

The brand new cloth has a lot to do with the balls dropping that normally wouldnt. Expect that to change as the table gets worn in.

I wouldn't expect them to change too much with only 40-50 games being played per day. I doubt if the table will get much use other than during the matches.

Right on Jay. John played great and Justin Hall picked up right where he left off at the US Open. Solid start for the Americans.
