Cue Builders or Assemblers

Who is who? I am in no way trying to start a bashing or trash talking thread. Even though I figure it's going to lean that way. I'm just curious as to who the real cue makers are. I've heard rumors of a couple of people who "assemble" cues as to building them from "scratch". I have my favorites (Mottey, Capone, Scruggs).

I'd say just about all cuemakers who have established a good reputation and following are the real deal. The "cue assemblers" tend to be newbies who are learning but most grow out of it & do their own thing soon enough. We all buy something, though, be it joint pins, bumpers, etc. As for the components i'd say most any reputable builder is doing it themselves.

One example I know of. I know one cue maker who makes sneaky petes. He makes the full splice blank. Cores it, adds his own taper and so on and there's his cue. I know others who buy the premade blanks. And then does his thing and there's his cue. I don't mind one or the other as far as that goes. But people who get premade and pre-inlaid butts and forearms and just glue them together. That's just false to me.

If you like the end product, then that should be enough for you.

If you need a better answer, then look at the requirements for the American Cuemakers Association.

There are plenty of cuemakers that aren't members of the ACA that would fit your scrutiny.

you mean like bushka??? he used blanks is he not a cue maker???

i my self have done both i used blanks until i got the machinery to build a nice forearm, but construction is key above all other things.

this thread can go so many ways, i have a feeling its going to be dogging more people than anything.

Why does he core it?
Not good enough ?

I agree. I wasn't meaning to bash anyone or talk trash. Just wanted to see what your opinions would be.

I'm a player, not a collector. So, if I call a "cue maker" and say I want a cue with "this", "that" and "the other", and that "cue maker" delivers, and the cue plays well and is built to last; then I dont give a rats rear end how they go about the build. To me, that is their business.

how about someone without traditional tools .... until 6 months ago I didn't have access to a lathe. but have been making cues for almost 10 years

You might what to try a Madden. Best thats out there! A true pro and craftsman. His new taper is great! Also Capone and Barnhart! All play great.

Ive been watching one of the top cue makers for the last 2 years and there is a big difference between him and most others.Everything he does is painstakingly long but right.
