Not planning on going or even interested myself, just would like to hear comments on this.

"This price is for a seven day workshop about 4 hours per day, also for 2 cues you build and take home"

Q: What is your name? Can I see some examples of your work? Does this price include the cost of the cue when I take it home? How fancy can the cue get, points, veneers, inlays? Feb-05-08
A: My name is Mike McCormack, I am going to post some cue photos asap on the auction site, The $500 is for the workshop and cue you make and take with you... you handle travel and hotel. the cue can be a plain jane or full splice with veneers and ivory inlays. depending on your preferences... Winners will be explained the process in more detail over the phone if needed.. thanks

I saw the same post the other day too.. I wonder if he knows how to master the hit of the wallabushka cue..

I wonder what kind of equipment he has or if we can get some photo's of the shop..

It does appear interesting. Especially if you read the feedback, and see that he has sold mostly clothes and golf stuff and that he sold his supplies in January as he didn't have a lathe any more.......
Let us know when you go Joey, maybe you can stay at my house, then teach me what you learned when you come home at night:D

I will send out you out the photos and refrences when I am home at my computer, the lathes are hightower deluxe, grizzly and southbend

I am still waiting for photos .Then I am going to ask If I can build a Szam copy of a 8 point Gus with veneers & Ivory inlays ,Ivory joint & butt cap
Then I want a matching J/b.
I can not wait for his reply.:D

I wouldn't let ANYBODY on my equipment besides close family. The risks are far too high. Anything from machine breakdowns to personal injury could easy eat up the $700 plus a bunch.

Why is the price $699 then?

I just saw that as well.
Maybe he thought about how well known of a cue maker he is  & wanted to get more for his knowledge:eek:

So I can learn to build a pointed and verneered cue with ivory inlays AND build a break cue in 28 hours?

Man these cue builders sure have pulled the wool over our eyes. All this talk of craftsmanship, skill and knowlege....pfffft poooey. Soon as I invest my 7 bills and 28 hours I will be announcing my new custom cue line. Look out Searing, Hercek, Szamboti and Dean. I am coming for your market share.

(I was just being a sarcastic pr!ck with the Dean thing)

I like the idea, don't know who he is but sound like a good business idea. (3 x $500 (699.00) a week) = $6000 a month is not bad. Hey, I'm opening my own session locally for those that want to build cue!! Weekend only guys!!. Here's your chance to learn from a newbie..we'll work through the issue together?? LOL..just kidding but a great idea!!

Honestly, I don't think it would be too hard to have a full splice blank turn down (with or without veneers....my full splice blanks are $90.00), add ivory inlay, (ferrule $15.00, Joint $70.00 and etc..if you have the equipments. I'm sure Mike has the process down so it probably a good opportunity for someone new to see how the equipments works, how to taper a blank and shaft,....$500 is way too cheap but then again ..it's not szamboti showing you how. I think it a great business idea for establish (experienced) builders to show newbie how to properly build a cue. I know that most would pay to see how searing, szamboti and many other builders build their cues.

Regards,
Duc.

I'm assuming you pay extra for materials you choose, or else there is a limit of choices on your materials & anything extra you want is extra you pay.

It does sound like a fair business gig, and could be profitable. But there's an old saying that's been around forever, "those who can do, and those who can't teach". If I were local enough i'd actually attend, or sponsor one of my friends or family to attend. It might honestly be worthwhile for a newbie.

I've been looking into paid apprentice ship for some time now several others do too......but not for the price this guys advertising. Most if not all cue builders wouldn't make you a playing cue and a break cue for his price let alone have you help. I'd like to hear from some body thats taken his class the price is just way to good to be true for a high quality class.

Ide be willing to bet this guy doesnt know his a$$ from his elbow about cuebuilding............:D In fact im even going to go out on a limb and say i "might" even know more than him....................

I live in ri. If you'd like to sponsor me to go and report back i will lol

one thing i know for sure is that you can't learn cuemaking in 28hrs.i have been studying under someone for 4-5 months or something like that now 6 days a week 6hrs a day and i still learn something everyday and i also forget something everyday.i try my hardest to take in and comprehend everything i learn everyday.to me cuebuilding is soemthing that needs to be repeatedly done over and over with instruction to learn properly.it also pays to think before you cut.sometimes i dram a blank and i have to sit there for a few minutes trying to rmember the exact procedure and exact specs of a procedure that i did 40 times just the day before.

"measure twice,cut once"

If you & me were good freinds, i'd sure sponsor you. My brother lives in Ohio, might send him if he wants. Would be better spent money to just buy him some equipment & teach him myself, though. He has already accomplished a bit using my equipment during visits, anyway. The first cue he sold, which was the 5th cue he built, was a single piece solid wood butt with rings at each end, two shafts. He got more for it than most known builders get for nicer plain-janes. Kicker was that the buyer loved it, said it was par or even better than my own work!!!!

But really, the deaL seems pretty great. I don't see building a cue in a week, though. There's a lot of work involved & most finishes require several days to get perfect. And what about accidents that newbies often make? What if you get nearly finished & then screw up? Would you have to go home with a junk cue or no cue?
