Browsing this forum it appears that folks trying to sell cues have run into some difficulty. Im perplexed that some pretty nice/rare cues havent moved. Some that come to mind are: The Skips listed by Buddha and Moosepool, DJ's Bluegrass, Martin's Prewitts - although his silver veneered 6pt sold, and the Tascarella j/b. But then if you look at Bill's site at Cornerstone most of his stuff is listed as sold. Im confused. Anyway love to hear you fellow cue junkies, addicts etc.. opinons on the current market.

And for the record,Roger if I had the $$ Id take that Skip of your hands. Im a sucker for the traditional/classic styled cues.

I'm looking for a Hoppe style Tasc and can't find one, it appears the market is drying up both ways......

Summer is coming to an end, I would venture a guess that business will pick right back up where it left off a couple of months ago. Same with houses in a couple of years...

I agree with you, Mike, the market seems extremely flat right now. We see a lot of cues here on AZ that seem reasonably priced, but just aren't selling. We see them bumped with lower and lower prices (I have done this LOL), but perhaps we will have to wait to the Christmas season to see a pick up in the after market cue business. AZ buyers want a great deal, which is understandable, but sometimes the offers that come through are too low to be considered. But, any offer is better than no offer and the seller can make the choice to sell or not. I think guys like Bushwhacker and Fast and Loose would probably have some valuable input here as they are buying and selling a lot and can relate the nuances of buying for resale as opposed to buying for collections.

I responded to Sebas add to late, he had a Hoppe style Tasc for $2,400 also would want a PJ Hercek Hoppe style, if I can find one they should go $2,300 - $2,700

You're partially correct. It appears that it is the mid-level cues being the affected the most. The highend 3K and up cues appear to be doing okay...but only because there is a select few collectors that have that kind of dough readily available, and have their eye out for these kind of cues in particular. They are not in a hurry to buy, so have the luxury of waiting for what they want to come available, and then being able to jump on it when it does.

Also, it appears that the under 1K cues seem to be doing relatively okay at the moment. That could well be because it is easier for many to pony up a few hundred dollars for a nice no-frills custom cue. Also, there are many new(er) cuemakers out there that are making it easier for those who do not have a large budget to get into a custom cue at a currently very reasonable price.

Trades and/or trades + cash seem to be more the norm for those cues in the 1.5K to 2.5K range. They do not appear to be selling outright for cash, or, if they are, they are selling at quite a deflated pricepoint. I know that currently, IF I had my cue on the open market, I would be more inclined to entertain interesting trade offers as opposed to trying to sell it outright. Watching a 3300.00 Mottey going for 1900.00 is enough to make you cry!!! And, perhaps, scare the hell outta ya!

It also appears that those who are buying are choosing to go through dealers and/or collectors, as opposed to purchasing on the 'Bay or through individuals here. That may well be attributed to the numerous scams that have abounded as of late. And no, I am not speaking of anyone in particular here....I am just observing that people are becoming more and more wary these days on the private sales front.

This may or may not be a warning sign that the market is about to make a shift of some sort. Perhaps like the middle class, the middle level priced cues could be disappearing soon. I guess only time will tell.

$3,500 is out of my range, and I prefer a steel joint
Chris know of any Hercek Hoppe's available?
The one I sold is not available and I know of several nice ones, but they are not for sale :(
It's called look into the future and if you have what you want, don't sell it!

It's the same old story, people piling into a few hot names and many others are being left behind.

Anyone know where I can find a Dale Perry?

To some extent, that has been historically true here for a while. It's what I call the 'Cue du Jour Syndrome'.

But when traditionally solidly sought after cues are bottoming out, or not moving at all, it kinda makes one wonder.

I guess this makes two of us looking for the same thing.
I will let you know if I find anything that I will pass on.

Cue market has not crashed.
The used-market has been saturated by test pilots selling their best-hitting cues. :)

I see cues moving along as usual for the most part, at least the ones I keep track of. Seems to me the bigger name makers, the super-stars, keep plenty busy.

For the others, maybe the prices in general need to come down some. There are just too many talented cue-makers. I repeat. TOO MANY CUE-MAKERS! The custom market is saturated.

Funny Story

I wish to paraphrase Rick Howard a great player and great cue maker.
He was talking at a tournament with some friends and commented there were probably 5,627 cue makers in the world
Just then in the middle of the conversation someone came up and wanted to sell a cue that no one ever heard of. As we all looked at each other puzzled Rick says "Who?" and with out missing a beat anounces with his arms outstreached "5,628" !!!! Everyone there had a big laugh except the guy selling the cue.
I say doom no boom yes.
Usually everyone wants what ever the top player has in his handds at the local pool hall. But cue collectors will collect.

In the past three summers, I picked up great bargains on nice cues due to the slow selling time. But, to me this year seems especially down on everything except mint Barry/Pete/Dennis/Joel cues. (Pardon me if I left out other top shelf makers whose cues are moving). In 2004 and 2005, the market seemed to pick up in the fall. It will be interesting to see if it does again this year.

It is a good time to be a buyer . . . .
