Cues Stolen - Cross Post with Wanted/For Sale

I hope Mike H won't mind me cross posting this. I posted it in the Wanted/For Sale section because I thought that the folks who visit there might have a little more experience with my situation. But I'd like to post it here as well to see if anyone has any ideas..... Let me tell you folks what happened and let me know if I have any recourse....

I was friends with this girl for a short time. I went in to visit her a few nights ago (platonic, Ktown ), and it was cold and raining outside. I brought my cues inside so they wouldn't be left in my cold, damp truck.

I left kinda in a hurry and left my cues there at her apartment. I know that for a fact. Of course when I called her the next day to go by and pick them up, she told me that I was mistaken, and I hadn't left them there. She obviously doesn't play seriously or she would know that players keep exact tabs on their weapons. She said that she looked good everywhere, and the case (with 3 cues inside) was nowhere in the apartment. She wouldn't let me come back to the apartment and look for myself. I have found out since that she has very shady friends, and one of them is the son of one of the most notorious pool hustlers ever to live in these parts.

Knowing that I left the cues there, I visited the local pawn shops. One of the shops said that a person matching her description was just in trying to pawn cues, but that their particular shop didn't take cues in on pawn. That owner told me of another pawn shop, but warned that the owner was a crook who asked few questions, and thats where every druggie and crack head took everything that they could steal. I went by there. The owner told me that he couldn't legally tell me what he had taken in on pawn and it would be 60 - 90 days before it would be put out for sale. He told me that if I thought something was stolen, that I could file a police report. I may have made a mistake even going there, tho, because he told me that it had been quite a while since he had taken in any cues, and that he didn't have any cues at the present time. I personally saw 3 cheap cues leaning in the corner behind the counter.

I went to file a police report, and this is my luck. The police station in the small town where I moved was closed for Christmas. How about that. Now it is a small town, but I've never heard of that. The doors were locked tight and there was a note on the doors that if anyone had an emergency, they should dial 911. The note said the police department would reopen Monday.

I was leaving for Chattanooga for a few days later that afternoon, so I rode on over here to see some friends. I plan on heading back Thursday or Friday. I don't know what to do. I have all the players in the county on the lookout, and there are only 2 small rooms in the area.

Help me out. Do I have legal recourse since I left the cues there and they went missing? I am filing a police report for sure, but since I'm out of state I guess I should wait till I get back into town.

Help me out folks..... What is my best course of action?

Thanks in Advance,
Mike

Shoot the girl in the kneecaps, and she will instantaneously SING TO YOU, where your cues are.
Honestly, for me, this would not be a case of LEGAL recourse.

Gee Mike,

This just plain sucks.
It's terrible news but it sure seems that even sensible people make bad decisions and you made one. Mike Surber made one too. :( It could have been worse for you.

I doubt if you have any "legal" feet to stand on although I am not a lawyer.

Just as important though is the fact that as this economy continues to get worse more and more people are going to find themselves in a pickle financially and a person's survival instinct is strong. Stealing is the least that a person will do when they are hungry or in serious need for cash.

Please don't think that I am admonishing you. I think it is a sign of the times and people can't be too careful. All of us could stand to be a little more careful about the company we keep.

Send a pal to some of the local pawn shops, looking for a single cue, looking for something similar to what you have lost and have him put your cell number on speed dial when he locates it.

Hi,
Don't wait to file with the cops until you get back. Tell them your pawn shop experiences too. If the second place is shysty, they will have a database and hopefully press him.
Do you have any pictures of your cues? Post them in Stolen Cue sticky so we can all keep an eye out.
Good luck.T.

You say you visited the local pawn shops Have you put the word out to the local pool halls and pool bars. Maybe offer a reward.
What is missing? Are they unique enough to be easily recognized?

I was also going to suggest posting pictures of the cues. If you don't have pics, maybe your cuemakers do? Or, friends took pics when your team took 1st in the league???? You get the idea. Whatever kind of pics you might have will be helpful. Also, details on the cues. What kind? Designs? Anything would be helpful.

Good luck!

well today is your lucky day, because as a current pawn shop employee i can tell you what their legal action is and what yours is because we HAVE to learn it, any and all things that go into a pawn shop by law have to be turned into the police, pawn shops have programs that are connected directly to a division of the police and whenever something comes in matching a reported stolen item it raises red flags and they check it out we have detectives in every other day, now on your part, if you can prove they are yours and identify them without seeing them when you make a report its going to help you alot, small things like say you have z shaft or a 314 shaft or something that actually says on there something most ppl wont notice unless they know what they are looking for that will help you alot as well as any other small details of the cues, when anything is pawned whether they sold it to a pawn shop or just a loan they are required by law to hold it for a minimum of 30 days if they bought it, and if they gave a loan its 60 days, the bad part about this is by law you cant get it back for that 30 days unless the police are involved and come in and tell them to give it back to you, but they wont do that unless they know who stole them and caught them, if worst comes to worst most pawn shops will cut you a little deal if you can like i said, identify them clearly as yours without seeing them they will usually let you buy them back for what they gave the person, most pawn shops give very very little for cues like 100 for an old schon in great shape with 2 shafts and a 3x6 case, so the wallet damage will be fairly small, hope that helped you in any way send me a message if you have any more questions

Sounded like if anyone would be helpful it may be the first pawn shop, as he was at least willing to talk to you about it. Ask them if they have video (most have it going all the time) that may have taped her when she was attempting to sell. If you could get your hands on that you may have a chance, otherwise it will be an uphill battle at best.

If they were my cues and I knew for sure that she had them I'd hire someone to go see her and find out where they are. I always liked it when someone stole their stuff back along with something of value for the trouble. Johnnyt

Mike, this is really pretty simple, like a five ball, stop shot, runout.

You've already spoken with the girl and gave her an opportunity to return the cues, she denied and refused.

Next steps:

1) Go to the police and tell them that you left your cues at a friend's house, they are missing and she denies seeing them or having knowledge of them. That you then went to a nearby pawn shop and the clerk told you that a girl fitting her description came in trying to pawn similiar cues the following day and he refused to accept them. You then went to another pawn shop and the owner/clerk was very uncooperative...you believe that there is a fair chance that he may have accepted them.

2) You should be able to file a stolen property report (insist if necessary), the police should visit the girl and possibly convince her to return them or tell them where they are. If she doesn't fess up they should visit the first pawn shop and get a definite identification, then they should go to the second pawn shop with the police report and, if the owner has half a brain and has the cue, you should have them returned. You will be asked to file charges and she should be arrested on felony theft charges (value usually over approx. $500), you will be asked to cooperate with the DA by testifying. Your decision.

The end.

Jim

I don't have any words of great wisdom for you Mike, wish I did. If you aren't having any luck with the chick and you know she had them then go to the police and let them know. It can't hurt and if she knows you are going to do it she may come clean, may not. If she doesn't, at least it may cause her a headache. Hopefully, if they ask the guy at the first shop he will tell them that she tried to get rid of them to him (if he doesn't develop amnesia).

Sucks for you however you look at it. Hope it works out but you know how shit like this usually ends up.

Moral of the story is don't "visit" any women that may require you to leave in a hurry. Mike you may have to bite the bullet & come off the hip and buy yourself another Cuetec.

With friends like that you sure don't need any enemys. The police don't need permission from her to go in her house. Report them stolen and give them her name.

Anarchist

In two somewhat similiar situations i took matters into my own hands with favorable results.

When i first came to MEMPHIS i was single and not zactly hangin with choir girls. Cause i never got into the date "deal" it was a lot of meet/greet and lets get to know each other. Too great a %tg of my gal/pals were pole dancers, etc.,etc., etc. As some of you know i'm a bastard and my unknown bio father might have been from a line of NAZI monkeys because i've always been into bling. Fast forward to the next AM; got up and went to work while whatchamacallit, who had her own wheels, was still in the land of nod. Was running late and didn't stash mucho dimes worth of bling. When i got home squeeze and bling were in the wind. Went to the shake joint where she slaved and splained that if my bling didn't find it's way home by 6pm the following day i would carve the 5 letter slang term for prostitute on her forehead with my dull Bowie. She easily beat the deadline.

The other instance involves the birth of my youngest, a Rott puppy, My wife's best friends junkie husband and a Colt Python.

Things also worked out in this case.

Not saying that a libertarian/anarchist approach is best for everyone, but, it works for me.

IMO legal avenues are a viable last resort.

Hope you get your cues back, adam

Hey KV,

You, Ktown, and Stick all know my track record with women. There could be 100 women in a line. 99 good ones and 1 loser. Of course, I'm gonna walk straight up and strike up a conversation with the loser.

It really hurts your guts more than the money. And you guys know I usually know the company I keep pretty well. Hey... Strike it up to experience.

Thanks again for the support.

Mike

Sorry to hear this Mike. If you ever make your way up to Virginia hit me up. The beer and table time is on me!

Mike, call the local police today.....if you are lucky, this chic may be well known to the local police and they just might be motivated to help you.....small town police should know exactly who to ask and how to ask them.....call them today.....you might just be surprised.....and they might be willing to take the info over the phone....

Good luck...
