Cuetec Fires Strickland

because custom cue makers cannot afford to pay what the production cue companys can. most custom cue makers will only make a player a free cue or possibly pay their entry fees into tournaments. that may sound like a decent deal ,but not when you consider all the expenses of life on the road. custom cue makers usually only make and sell 10- 150 cues a year and they need the profit off these cues to continually buy cuemaking supplies , not to mention, support themselves and their families. production cue companys are just that ,companys. it is profitable for them to be represented by top players as thair cues get exposure and they can virtually build a cue at the touch of a button when someone wants their cues. they also write off the endorsement money from their taxes.

If Earl shows up next weekend at Randolphs in Hickory for Southern tour action I'll let you know what he's shooting with and if he gambles any. Me and my buddy Red talked to him last weekend at Greenville before he played and he was off kelter a little. K town D said he might have had some water damage problems the night before he did seem worn out. I think Earl still has a few favorite sticks laying around to play with, I will try to buy the Cotex err Cutec from him to sell on Ebay with all 22 shafts and 2 cases he carried sometimes to small tournaments so save up your dough and I'll let you know when they are on Ebay. Leonard

I heard that Earl was getting between $75,000 and $120,000 a year from Cuetec. If so thats a lot of money to lose for a pool player. I hope he saved some of that money he got for running all those racks. But if he wasn't gambling for 17 years maybe he did save some money.

When Earl is in stroke and his head is into the game not on the railbirds he's my favorite pro to watch...even today. Johnnyt

From the threads that I have read most custom cuemakers won't even think about giving a cue away to a good player for advertisement since so many have been sold the next day or week to get stake money, it would hirt to go into your local room the next week and see someone shooting with the trophy stick you made for someone. I don't think that will happen with Earl though even if he starts gambling again. Leonard

After I saw firsthand what he said to a mentaly challenged young man at DCC this year I know where he can stick his Cue whatever the brand

After thinking about it, seems to me , the Cuetech/Strickland relationship was one of the longest and arguably most effective player representations I can remember. They both profited from the relationship greatly. Earl got some money. Cuetech got respect from some people. How many times have you heard over the years "Can't be that bad Earl plays pretty good with one" It should of been Cuetech's tag line.

Corey had a deal for awhile with the 5280 (not sure of the number) cues, that died awhile ago. Archer still has Scorpion. Buddy was with Lucasi for awhile.I can't really think of any other major sponsor/players combos right off hand.

I think the reason for this is most of the people who are in the market for this type of cue are not influenced very much by what a pro is playing with. They are looking for price point, looks, availability (easy to get), and word of mouth. And the cue companies have realized this. Thus few big sponsorships.

Say what you will about Cuetech, but they did an outstanding job of marketing their product. This includes Allison and Earl. It will be interesting to see where they go now as a company. Because there really isn't much steak behind all the sizzle.

I would love to see Earl get back in the mix as far as matching up. I would want absolutely no part of either side though. Could you imagine the sh!# storm if Earl went on tilt with the whole joint betting on him. How hard would an opponent have to work to get him there ?

You'll see how great those metal Cuetec cues are in the coming months. The way they have chosen to dismiss American champion Earl Strickland is disgusting.

Buy American cues. Help support American cuemakers.

USA, all the way. USA, all the way. USA, all the way!

HERE, HERE... A standing ovation for Cuetec!! It's about time someone slapped this jerk in the face like he has done to the sport for YEARS!!! RETIRE ALREADY!!

You just wait and see what Earl Strickland will do when he gets a "real" cue stick in his hands instead of a cheap metal rod which costs no more than 2 bucks to manufacture. Seventeen years and this stinking company humiliates in public one of America's champions.

Go overseas, and you'll see what they're playing with. It ain't those cheap metal Cuetecs. They know that the custom-made American cues are the best in the world, bar none.

I think Cuetec should stop making cues that are only fit for being sold on walmart shelves. The only reason Strickland needed a slap in the face was to figure out "Hey, I should have ditched these guys long ago!"

Take a look at this thread, as an example.

Almost 2,000 hits, 93 posts, in about 3-1/2 hours since the thread was initiated, all because of one word:

STRICKLAND

Bye-bye, Cuetec.

My latest subscription to Billiards Digest arrived today, and I read in it that Cuetec has fired Earl Strickland. Cuetc president, Jones Chang, said, "Earl has endorsed Cuetec from 1990 until 2007...He made great contributions to the game and to Cuetec. But when he loses, he loses himself. And that affects the Cuetec image. His behavior is detrimental to our promotion. We have stood by him in the past, but now it is time to end our relationship."

"Imperial [International, who recently acquired J-S, the Cuetec distributor] never liked me," Strickland said. "They were ready to boot me the first time I sneezed. I thik they pressured Cuetec into firing me. But Jones had it with me anyway."

...Strickland insisted that the production cue contributed to his poor play in recent years, which in turn contributed to his ornery behavior.

"I can't get any better with that cue anyway," Strickland insisted. "If they [Cuetec] made a better cue, I'd still be winning. But I was handicapped with that cue. I was at a 2-ball disadvantage against a guy like Mike Immonen playing with a good wood cue...And they never treated me right."

As for who would suffer more from the break-up, Strickland responded pointedly. "I made Cuetec," he said. "They didn't make me."

It's been like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

What do you think happens now? Any other sponsors gonna grab up Strickland? Or is the rest of the industry gonna stay away from him?

I always wondered how Earl and Allison could play with a Cuetec. I never thought this could be a cue for a "Professional Player." I'm also wondering how Archer is doing it with "Scorpion Cues." I've been tempted to ask Johnny the last 3 years he's been in Puerto Rico, but I thought that it would be an "imprudent" or an "out of line" question.

I do hope Earl finds some type of sponsorship. It must be "difficult" right now for him but he needs to find his "comfort" zone, and maybe another cue that fits him "right."

I wish the best for Earl. He deserves it.

While I am no fan of Cuetech's products, lets not throw out the baby with the bath water here. If memory serves they provide a good deal of support to the WPBA tour. And they put up with Earl's antics for what some some think was much too long. And payed him as well or better as any other sponsored player.

I would be willing to wager there are more than a few players who would do just about anything to get the deal Earl had. I know several.

If you want to be paid like a professional you have to act like one. Allison seems to get it. Jeanette Lee has made a nice living out of being a great represenative. She has changed sponsors many times over the years. Yet I have never heard a bad word about a sponsor she no longer works for.

It's called being a professional.

Earl Strickland deserves to be treated with the respect that he showed this Cuetech company for 17 years of his pool-shooting career.

That is what I call professional. Cuetech sucks.
