Hi Guys,

Anybody know what paper works I would need to get to ship a load ivory bill Mcdaniel to Japan so that custom don't give any issue? Was thinking of contacting Bill's company to see if they are willing to provide a letter saying the ivory are legal pre ban etc... In the past, we just shipped them as used cue and had no problem but this client is little more concern.

Regards,
Duc.

Bill does not own the company anymore. He stopped making cues 2 years ago. I can tell you how he would have shipped it though. He would have put on the Customs bill the following: Billiard cue, 2 shafts. Value- $98.00

I have seen him ship $5k-$10k cues like this many times. He never lost one to Customs, or any other way. He liked to gamble!

HE'S NOT REALLY THE ONE GAMBLING. THE BUYER IS. I'D HAVE TO GUESS HE'S LIKE ME......

I USUALLY, TAKE PAYMENT FOR THE CUE, ONLY IF THE BUYER ASSUMES ALL RISK ONCE THE CUE LEAVES MY HANDS. SO THEY KNOW IF IT GETS SEIZED OR LOST IT'S ON THEM WITH NO REFUND.

Thanks Guys, so far it sound like it's a lot of trouble to ship ivory (exotic) cue out of Canada or US. I've been bringing my cues with ivory back and forth from Canada and US with no problem through custom. I've sent many cues from Canada into US (most anywhere else (Japan, China,Singapor, Taiwan)) without any problems. I've sent a Szamboti w/ ivory to Taiwan via Fedex without any problems but lately I've been hearing storys about custom confiscating these packages. I've told that if your package ever get confiscated that it will be sent back to you....(don't know if this is true). All in all, it sound like it's becoming a lot more complex to send exotic cues out north america. I heard that other material used in cue (not only ivory) are now illegal eg. Water Buffalo Bone Inlays, etc, etc.

Will need to email the buyers that it can be shipped but at owner's risk.

Thanks,
Duc.

This very subject is one of the main reasons that the Japanese market has virtually dried up for higher end custom cues. Their gov't has become much more adept at spotting and confiscating cues that contain ivory. As a result, the buyers are not willing to take such risks having cues shipped. Big cues with ivory inlays being shipped to Japan.........man, you are really rolling the dice nowadays !!

If the custom agent that is in Anchorage inspects your FedEx'd cue with ivory in it, you ain't getting it back....that's what confiscated means...sorry.

when i got a cue made by kenneth murrell in the states i had a lot of ivory used in the points. i looked into the laws of owning and selling ivory, i found no way of shipping the cue to canada without the risk of it being descovered and put in line to be burned!!

my only option was to go get it my self,,, and when you spend a bunch of money on a cue like that going to get it costs about as much as the money you save from paying the taxes.

Get big Budweiser or Playboy nudie girl stickers and wrap the cues' butts and forearms in them. Then the buyer can have the stickers buffed off locally. Oh, and wrap the ferrules in white electrical tape.

P.S. I am joking!!

the cues i have shipped and have had shipped to me we use a sharpie pen to cover all the ivory. with all the colors they come in it's easy to hide the ivory. when the cue arrives you take it off with nail polish and it doesn't eat the finish.

I used to make custom ipsc pistols or race guns and I would ship them as ....machined metal parts..... I sent them to Canada and China 10-20 times and the Philipines alot never had lost a shipment. Now that's gambling I used local post office and the slowest ship they had I didn't care if it took a month to get there but it did.

Might try a sample cue Label it machined ebony, purpleheart with sterling silver parts pool cue. less in the detail or description is better.

When I bought a cue with lots of Ivory from a Hong Kong member, he suggested putting a low $$$ amount on the customs form to keep it "under their radar".

With a $350 declared value, it worked like a charm. Customs never even opened the box. It did make me kinda nervous though.

Well, I can say that this does not work with German customs. I had Kenny send me a cue declared as $450, and they:

a) demanded a proof of the value, either invoice or payment documents
b) ordered my father (he claimed it for me since I didn't want to take a day off for this) to open the package. Since it contained no ivory, there was no problem with this. However, I don't believe that I would have gotten it out of customs if they had found ivory.

About the time of the SBE there was a discussion of Ivory, and Japan, and i believe it was mention the famous, or infamous Japanese cue Dealer ?Lucky? removed all mention of Ivory from his web-site, as the government was cracking down on personal Ivory procession.

I wonder if cues that are confiscated are ever auctioned back to the public? I swear I remember a friend in Canada, sending an ivory cue that never cleared custom and they send it back to him. This was like 5 years ago, so maybe it changed now.

Anyhow, probably will try shipping it express with low value and pray it there.

Duc.
