Dan janes '71-72 'Ed Kelly' cue

Ground Chuck

Registered
Inherited a Dan Janes cue built for my father in 1971-72... There is no joss logo or any proprietary markings but Dan acknowledges building it and does remember my father. I will post pictures when I get a chance but perhaps some older members would recognize it as the Ed Kelly model as pictured in one of joss' old photos on the site (3 ivory points consisting of 3 rectangular inlays joined by thin red balsa-wood lines). I'm under the impression there are a few of these out there and would like to see pictures/hear from anyone whose come across one actually I'd love to see anything from this era of JOSS, especially unmarked examples. Maybe drop a link of somewhere I could see one.

That is the picture I meant to post. It will be a few days before I can get to the cue to snap pix but forearm is ebony, joint is ivory, beyond the wrap is all ivory with ebony windows containing very intricate inlays that resemble arrow flights, alternating directions. Joint protector cap is solid ivory to match as evidenced by presence of the vein that would have run thrue centerline of the tusk.

BAD pics!

WOW these pics suck! For us all to be able to really see the cue, post some GOOD pics...Someone really needs lessons on taking better pics! Most of these are 'blown out' and I can barely make out what is what. White balance is awfully bad in the one pic for sure, it looks yellow!!

Sorry, my cue photography staff was elsewhere that day. Admittedly I've done a poor job here and am at a loss for how to achieve better results.
I applaud the efforts of those here able to capture these things as well as I've seen done elsewhere in this gallery. I'll post better when I get a chance.

I bet Mr. Will Prout might be able to offer some information on the Joss cues of this era... especially those of the box nature!

Who the heck are you DUKEEEE, Herb Ritts?

Thanks for sharing this classic JOSS CUE with us. That is a great, and I think, "rare" cue.

If I am not mistaken the cue in the picture is a Gina cue.the eddie kelly picture
I am not sure but I thought the Joss copies were also slightly different
Please correct me if I am wrong

deanoc, you're right.

Ed Kelly's cue is indeed a Gina Cue and the 2 very similar versions of the same cue were made by Bill Stroud, (Joss West) there is other awesom 'Box' style cue that was made by the late great Gus Szamboti, which had a leather tube case matching the butt design.

I had a copy of the G Szam vesion that was made by Carolina Custom Cues and good God Almighty, that cue stick was like a dream to shoot with

I'll post pics sometime later today

Agreed 100%. WTF is Duke whining about? It is a fugking miracle that we are able to sit here and see the cue, period. And he is gonna whine about it?

He probably hollers at the microwave oven too, for taking too long to boil water.

Box Cues.............

The picture of Ed Kelly is of him shooting with his box cue made by Ginacue (Ernie Gutierrez) in 1969, and is the first box cue ever made. The cue is mentioned in the Blue Book in the section for Ginacue.

Ed made the cue famous while on his travels as a road player, and the cue single-handedly influenced the cuemaking for several top cuemakers, somewhat changing the landscape of cues in the US.

I like box cues and have dozens in my collection. I own this Ed Kelly Ginacue, along with many others made by Gus Szamboti, Josswest, David Kersenbrock, Bill Schick, Barry Szamboti, Paul Mottey, Gilbert, Tonkin, Scruggs, etc.

I have attached some pictures of a few box cues in my collection; older pictures, but you can see them pretty well:

Josswest, Josswest (Bill Stroud`s personal cue), Josswest, David Kersenbrock (only box cue DPK made), fancy Gus Szamboti, Ed Kelly Ginacue, Barry Szamboti, Gus Szamboti, Josswest (made for Richie Florence), Joss (made for Jim Rempe).

Don't you ever feel guilty of taking all those monsters off the palnet the players live on and not allowing them to be sold off every two or three months as the newest owners need to eat?
Pretty!!!!
Nick :)

Joss Cue

It looks as the same cue I traded Jim Buss for a conversion he made in 2007. It is a Joss. You can PM me about cue.
