Now we've all heard how Efren's such a nice guy and all, but how come we don't hear any stories about Efren being bad, nasty, crafty, naughty, scheming or generally uncool? I mean, he can't be all good, can he? Cmon, I wanna see his dark side! I was a bit tickled when in the efren vs. grady post someone mentioned that he was trying to shark grady. hehehe now that's what i like to hear!

There isn't one I played him 5-6 times lots of hours and he was always a gentleman even whenhe was stuck. The last time he was down 3 games and won a game and I quit the AC was freezing, I give him all the money back because he never complained about the huge spot, that was the 1st he showed, we been buddies since.

You're looking in the wrong place for bad things about someone. He don't need that stuff to win. Believe it or not, there are a few people who will put their integrity above winning. If you ever see him get upset, you'll see him grab the back of his neck or sratch his head. I've seen him play a lot of matches, and he is always a complete gentleman. Not too many of those around. you know....I've seen Efren stand infront of shots like that before. I don't think it's sharking, I think He's trying to see how the player is going to hit the shot. He may be the best in the world, but you can always learn another way...

The Efren Reyes I know, can be quite difficult... he has been known to attack and bite if he doesn't get his way, is addicted to catnip, kicks his litter out of this box, leaves his toys all over and wakes me every morning with out fail before 7am... I never even bother to set my alarm clock anymore...;)

(Efren lost his left eye after a night of hustling pool in sketchy Brooklyn bar...he has since retired his cue in favor of long afternoon naps)

One time I saw Efren at the local poolhall, and I went up to him and told him I was a big fan. He smiled at me and told me to come closer. As I approached him, he kicked me in the nuts! After that he beat me severely with a cueball in a sock, and then he doused my car on fire with gasoline and set it ablaze.

I read an article reporting that Manalo said Efren didn't speak to him for days after Marlon eliminated him in the 2004 (or 2003) WPC World championships.

Now that's just plain evil!

I saw that video. Grady was down studying a shot facing 10 o'clock of the screen and Efren was at 12 o'clock. When Grady suddenly changed his mind and faced towards Efren's direction. At this instance Efren just stood real still until Grady told him about standing in his line of sight. Who's sharking who?

I use to see him get real upset when a fellow Filipino beats him, I guess that's considered as lack of heirarchial respect here. He won't talk to the guy and even not acknowledge the guy's presence for days. But that was a few years ago.

All I know is if you ever get the chance to watch the race to 120 between Efren and Earl in Japan...do so. Besides some of the best run-out pool you ever see, you can also see how easy going and professional Efren is. This match lasted about a week I think and Earl is a complete ASS the whole time. Efren never says a word...just lets his cue do the talking for him.

On the opposite end who is the worst, besides Earl? It would be a interesting poll to rank the players from the nicest to the worst.

Hong Kong.

I really didnt like Earls attitude during the match. Like some parts he was quiet and stuff but then others hes walking up to the table on Efrens turn and stuff. If anything, its worth it to watch Efren show one of those rare periods of emotion. The score wouldnt even have been that close if Efren had better luck on the break the first 2 and a half days.

...when later asked about the incident and questioned about setting the car ablaze and not getting caught up in the flames himself, Efren simply replied, "I got lucky!"

About two months ago I was out in vegas for the BCA tournament, staying at the Stardust. It was late saturday night, around 4:00. I was $hitcanned stumbling back to my hotel room through the casino floor. I saw Efren sitting at the blackjack table with nobody next to him. I thought how often do you get the chance to sit down next to the best pool player in the world. so i took a seat hoping to strike up a conversation. I started chit-chatting with the dealer hoping he would chime in. He didn't say one word. I got frustrated and starting cursing and the dealer asked me a couple times to stop. I think Efren was fed up at that point and walked away to a roullete table. Guess it was too much excitement for him.

i believe that... efren hates losing. i know he matched up one time in the philippines with luat in a race to 31 for i forget how much, anyway efren was on the hill like 30 to 26 and efren comes up dry on the break then luat runs out the set to win... i heard efren didn't talk to him for like a month, haha. i think it also perturbs him when one of his countrymen play so well against him then go on to play someone else poorly... a lot of the filipinos play their best against efren because they are very comfortable playing him, and that i think bugs him. but these guys are like part of his family.. i could never see efren being a poor sport to anyone else, he's the most gracious and humble guy i've ever seen.

You guys haven't seen how nasty Efren can get on karaoke contests.
If you sing really off-key, he'll whack you with a stick. :)

If you sing My Way off-key, he'll stick a butterfly knife in your back.

At the 2004 WPC in Taipei, Efren and I were playing each other in the qualifying rounds (race to 5). I was ahead 3-2 and I was down on a long 8 ball shot with easy position for the 9. Efren was sitting in line with my shot and just as I was pulling the trigger, he dropped his cue to the ground!!!

Needless to say, I missed the 8.

I found it very difficult to get mad at him. I just laughed and thought "can you believe, Efren sharked me"!

I lost the match 3-5.

I watched the video, Efren wasn't sharking Grady IMO.

Last January at the DCC I saw Efren play a doubles match. He pulled this move I have never seen before. He had a totally worthless partner, I mean this putz was a walking talking Budweiser cue, a carbon copy of Ruprecht (the monkey boy) in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Well his opponents were laughing so hard at this “player” they really could not focus and eventually lost the match. They never really had a chance once this dufus that was Efren’s “partner” stepped up to the table, it was really a sight to behold. Playing with someone like that as a partner was really a crafty move but I guess you have to be Efren to get away with it.
