Are Davis blanks really worth the $$$$ they sell for?

Yes they are well worth the money!!!! I have used 5 of them now and no problems at all. very good work by John!!
Is it just me, or do most of them look defective? Looks to me like most of them have rounded points and a huge gap between the point and veneer, some filled, some not. If i had seen them elsewhere, i would guess they were chinese knockoffs, not the work of a 40 yr. veteran.

Those blanks are not defective; just significantly oversized. In early construction, the veneers extend several inches beyond the original point wood, sometimes leaving a gap. The "rounded" points you're referring to are probably actually square. As the blanks start to get turned down, the point wood magically comes to a point and fills the veneers.
Research full-splice construction a bit and you'll see what I mean. For a visual reference, Joel Hercek shows a veneered blank here before any turns are made on it.

How good do these blanks play?
That is an unfair question.....
The blanks can be made to play great or horrible depending on who finishes the build.
I am sure of this because I've owned several cues with Davis blanks and all played different. Some great and some like firewood.
As long as the blank is structuraly sound Mr. Davis has done his job.
I can say that I haven't seen a Davis blank that wasn't solid.

No problem. Knowledge of the process leads to a greater appreciation of the art.
I'll have 20-30 SF of peacock veneer ready to ship in the next 24-48 hours. It rained all weekend and put me behind schedule for drying veneer. I knocked out half of them yesterday and will do the other half tomorrow weather permitting. From there I'll update 16 colors on my site with an additional 400-500 SF in stock.
Running a few days behind on shipping for a few folks, but Mother Nature's harder to beat than the Ghost.
Agreed, which is why I believe Martin only wants experienced cuebuilders finishing out the blanks.
Actually each blank is perfect or very close to it when I get them. They are all oversize with respect to girth and length. Many people just don't understand what they are looking at--it is difficult for some to visualize the wood that will be cut away. The blanks are not completed butts ready for a joint pin. Each blank requires many turnings and cuts before it becomes a butt. I think we're fortunate John Davis dedicates a good amount of his time and energy to make the blanks available. The cuemaker or cuebuilder who creates a cue from the blank is by far the most important factor in the end result.

NO REASON TO BE SORRY..... I WAS JUST GIVING INFORMATION.
MY ONLY ISSUE WITH THE BLANKS IS THAT THE POINTS ARE TO FAR FORWARD, AND THERE ISN'T ENOUGH FOREARM WOOD. NOT THE LOOK, OR BALANCE I USUALLY LOOK FOR.

I had the same question over a year ago. After tons of research, I found out that davis was around with all of the greats. I wanted a cue made from someone in that era.
I went through martin at Superior Cues because he was kind enough to help me with the process and was super and patient with my ignorance.
John uses really great woods and they are built well. martin helped me pic out a good weight, tone and density in one of the blanks. I then sent it out to Ariel Carmeli what was also amazing to deal with. He came highly recommended by martin. Ariel explained to me that as long as you have a good tone and density, you can get a great cue if the shaft combo fits the cue well.
I get the cue next week. I plan on doing it again with martin's help...after hopefully picking up a good cue at SB next year.
