This is a Davis conversion I am just finishing up. The blank is one of the first few John made when getting back into the business. Since aquiring this blank, I have gotten to know John a bit & so this cue took on more meaning. Not only am I building it specifically for a fellow player, I am also building it as a tribute to John Davis, a fine gentleman & cuemaker. The owner has been awaiting very patiently, as this was supposed to be completed mid-summer. It is kingwood into maple with a kingwood butt. The joint collar is hippo tusk accented by kingwood/ivory checkered rings with thin kingwood & black phenolic rings, collared with black phenolic. The butt rings are a spin off of an old Bushka cue with veneered checkers. The veneers match the point veneers of grey & burgundy. Buttcap is delrin.

I normally don't post pics of my work here, but I think the new owner might enjoy seeing his cue shown off ;)

Thanks, Joey. Yeah, the shafts are nothing to sneeze at ;) The cue was fun to work on. In the process I became friends with the new owner as well as became friends with John Davis. One thing about cuemaking that is so great is the people involved. Getting to know other builders & cue nuts and making friends all over the world is worth more than any money involved.

EDIT: the veneered rings are courtesy of Wes Hunter. He dyed the veneers himself, was a tremendous help, also a great friend. We spent a bit of time mixing just the right ratio of dyes to get the colors right. Not to mention ruined shoes, but that's another story ;)Thanks, Wes.

The tall pointed DAVIS blanks are out of sight and the conversion execution aint to shaby;) :) :)
 
Simply stunning looking cue Eric. The Kingwood grain in the butt is amazing. If it plays as good as it looks, the owner will be playing lights out and well worth the wait.
 
Thanks, Greg. Not my typical cue, but fun. I see you are putting some stuff out that is uncharacteristic of you, too. Sometimes it's refreshing to change gears & see things from other angles.
 
Very nice cue Eric. The Kingwood figure is fit for a King. Your ringwork is superb. The shafts have straight grains. I like the one on the 3rd pix besides the butt, it has lots of gpi. Another fine piece of Sugartree.
 
Super cue, Eric. Those Davis blanks can be spotted a mile away. I really thought his blanks would be confused with others and didn't originally understand why he left such a small length of wood in the joint area. I now see this method gives cues made with his blanks a unique look of their own.

Here's a pic of the raw materials, or almost raw. It shows the blank, the butt sleeve billet, ring billets after I made them, the laminated veneer sheet that the butt rings were made from, the joint collar taken from the tusk, & some unassembled ring packs. There's a whole lot more to a conversion than simply adding a joint & finishing. I had fun with it.
