I am a stay at home dad, during my boys naptime and after go bed. I am going to start practicing 2hrs to 4hrs a day in my basement. I want to see how good I can become. I am a 4/5 in the APA, I play 1 night week and I sometimes seem to make a few good shots and then rattle a simpler shot.

I am wondering what type of dvd, or website, or system would be the best to take my game to the next level. Please post or pm or e-mail @ millertime77@sbcglobal.net

I am thinking about keeping a record of my daily pratice. Is there a area in Azforum to post the practice your doing and the time and how you are increasing your skills.

Thanks for any info

First tip....switch to Bud Light or Golden Light. Do a search for an instructor, work on getting some sound fundamentals, and THEN you can train the right way. Some people can do it just from watching videos/getting reps etc...but you could very well have some big fundamental issues that will hurt the time it takes for you to improve. An instructor can help decrease the learning curve by showing you these things. Good luck, shoot well, and FFS switch beers .

Here on this forum you could, in theory, start your own (free) blog to document whatever you like...practice routines, results etc

And definitely change the beer selection :)

Take a video of yourself from a few angles on the table. Watch them to see if you can see anything wrong with your basics. Look for straight level stroke, make sure your pre shot rutine is solid and you repeat it with every shot. Find the point of aim and make sure you step into it correctly. Make sure you are hitting the CB where you wanted to hit it. Use less spin if you are using a lot. I would practice center ball for a half hour to an hour a day. Try to watch as many streams as you can of top players. If you are still having the same problems after a few weeks it might be time for a lesson or two. If you can learn off dvd's, CJ Willey's Ultimate Pool Secrets is very good to learn by. Good luck and straight shooting. Johnnyt

Jeremy,

If you have that much time, remember to work on defense as well. Diagram some basic safeties and work on ball control skills, banks and kicks. I would suggest about a third of your time on defense and the rest on offense.

Most players can improve their winning percentage quite a bit without actually improving their ball pocketing skills. The trick is to gain knowledge, improveand patterns, and practice defensive skills like safeties and kicks.

Pocketing balls should automatcially slowly improve with table practice time anyway, but putting together the patterns is a form of mental exercise that will keep your mind focused. Force yourself to shoot center pocket and don't cheat them unless the shot is a hanger.

I think watching pros play each other on video is one of the best forms of practice.

The other thing is to take a few lessons at least from a good teaching pro. Bad form will limit your improvement and an instructor's eyes can spot any glitches.

If you can find a instructor in your area and take a lesson. It will speed up your progress and you would practice in a correct mode.

If you don't have one. Find on Youtube the Tor Lowry video, he had good drills.

Work on your fundamentals first of all.

Good luck in your pool journey.

Jeremy,

Gene just happens to be in Indy at the moment giving perfect aim lessons... Don't fret it's way more than just aiming... You would be well served and I think he is offering a money back guarantee if you don't feel like the time is worth it.....

I have a short list of who I would pay for a lesson with these days and Gene is high up on my list...

Gene Albrecht 715-563-8712

He might be able to work around your schedule and do it in your basement... Can't hurt to call...

The pool bug has you now...........

Jeremy,

don t do the mistake too many players do :-)
Do yourself a favor and have a look for a qualified guy to give you an instruction in fundamentals.
To build the complete *house of pool* the basement has to be solid :) Then it takes time of hard work.

There are many great instructors overseas who can help you a lot. One investment where you will benefit for a lifetime.

lg from overseas,

Ingo

Locally you can go to BrickYard Billiards (Indianapolis) and play "Bobby" some cheap sets.....he'll steer you in the right direction.

thanks

Thanks everyone for your advice, I am going to find a instructor to work with to make sure I know all my flaws! So I can know what all I need to work on.
Who is Gene?

Lol! About the beers I stopped drinking for 3 months to support a friend! After I. Decided to have beer all the Name brand beers tasted not so great! Now I have a good rum or whisky and I found a couple local kraft beers that are good! But I did find that in tournement I go deeper in the brackets when I drink water. Seems like I don't get tired as I do when I drink!

I will talk to the guys at brickyard.

Should I do a lesson at my house wher do most of my pratice or at the brickyard or Waynes? What's everyones thoughts?

Thanks again for everyone help!

Jeremy...Doing the lesson at your house is the best option. No table time, no "prying eyes", and, if you work with me, you'll get your lesson recorded on dvds, so you can review (you won't be able to remember half of what you learn 24 hrs later, without having a way to review). If you're interested, I'll be coming through Indy on Saturday 3/30.
