DERBY CITY CLASSIC THOUGHTS, Jan 23-31.

Roy, I've got bad news for you. I'll tell you after the game.

yeah, yeah, I know.

After we have played 6 games, and I have been on the losing team all six times, you three will meet in the restaurant sharing the money taken from D'Fish ;)

(What is worse of being a fish and not knowing that you are a sucker, or being a fish, knowing you are a sucker and being hustled, but still play?)

Joey, I have a great idea. One night the four of us (John, Roy, you and me) can play a partners One Pocket game. We change partners after each game. Coaching allowed, that makes it more fun. That would be a blast and no handicapping involved this way, since we all get to be partners with everyone else. Can I get a second?

Jeeze! That is a great idea. I'm not sure if Roy will be able to stay up late with us veterans but we an train the young guppie. :D

You and Roy have me thinking a lot more serious about going to the DCC besides my moral obligation to try and help pool to look good to Harrah's Properties.

Get an extra person to stay in the room with you to cover the cost of the room. The derby is once a year, and nothing compares. Trying to describe it in words gives it no justice whatsoever. A person HAS to be there, then you can totally understand.

This may be the wrong thread to ask, or it may have been asked a few times already, but does anyone know if Efren is definitely planning on attending this year again?

Joey, we met and played a few games in the AZ room last year, hope you can make it, sounds like you have all the action you can handle this year, might have to rent a UHAUL to take all the cash back with you.. I just can't believe all these guys want a piece of your game, they must not know how you REALLY play....

I totally agree. I find it hard to describe the DCC to those who have no idea of what all it entails. So much to see and do, which leads me to the original question in this thread...what in particular attracts you to the Derby City Classic? For me, the main draw is watching the big $$$, big-name action all night long. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the tournament action, the vendors, the characters, the great players...every minute of it.

I'm not a big gambler, so the fact that the event is at a casino is no big deal/draw for me personally. I probably won't even gamble in the casino, but I'll be there for 4 days/3 nights to support the event. Ever since I attended my first DCC 4 years ago, I look right past the holidays and forward to the trek south to Louisville/Southern Indiana. I hope others support it this year as in the past because I believe a good turnout this year could lead to bigger and better things for the DCC and pool in general.

The Executive West filled a need as the event matured, but after 10 years, as a venue, it started to "fall behind" a bit. Considering the business the DCC generated for them, you would think they would have improved in areas such as the food and restaurants, etc. Sure, some things will be different this year with the change in venue, but this gives those of us who attended previous DCC's some great stories of "how it was back in the day." I believe Harrah's has a much bigger potential upside than the EW could provide. Others have mentioned that the casino will provide for a nice environment with better restaurants and plenty of security. If the event is as successful as it has been in the past few years, I would think Harrah's will be begging Greg to return.....IMO.

They have been reading my signature. FTR, I have been told that I am hypnotic....Listen to the sound of my voice.....Oh, I forgot, that was the wife telling me I was putting her to sleep when I was doing pool commentary. :D :D

Before the weekend I was told that Efren, Django, Alex Pagulayan, Ronatao Alcano, R. Luat and Lee Van Corteza are all planning to take the trip from Manila to DCC this year. Nothing is finally decided yet if all of them will go, but I seriously doubt that Efren will not be there.

So, to answer your question, Efren is definitely planning on attending this year again

The Hilton Hotel chain tried to start a billiard tour, but it went south after the second event in Pittsburgh. Hardly anybody showed up to play, much less watch it. This tour, though, had problems from the start with its planning, IMHO. It did not do its homework beforehand.

The Hilton deal was a lot different. It was geared toward a PRO TOUR, drawing the Pro players and Shortstop players. DCC on the other hand, is cheaper entry's, and geared to get the spectator's involved. Plus, Harrah's will be getting revenue from gambling, where Hilton's tour would not. Maybe, they could get Greg to run the tour. HARRAH'S DCC TOUR........ Run 6 tournaments a year in various places so people from everywhere could have a chance to attend.

Joey,,,, you made some great points.

I have heard that there is a man called JoeyA, willing to gamble, but can't play.

One of the guys telling this is hailing from Philippines, and he calls JoeyA EasyMoney, and the other one, a not so tall player from Sweden, sure won some easy money of JoeyA. I just want to check if what they tell me is true ;)

DCC is POOL's action capital

There is no other venue in pool that can compare to the DCC. Here's my short list:

1. You can walk towards the action room and wager on what color hair the next person to leave the room will have before you even get to the door.

2. Once inside almost anyone there will bet on which player will win the flip for the start of the next match.

3. If there are 8 tables in the action room, there will be 6 gambling matches going on ... or the gamblers are still asleep since they didn't finish until the room was closed for cleaning at 7AM.

4. You may learn spots that will take three minutes for someone to explain to you.

5. The ring games are full of excitement and shot making and you can almost always get a bet (if you don't think so, just come sit by me).

6. During the tournament there will not be a time when there is not a marquee match-up going on.

7. 98+% of the best pool players in the world will be in attendance.

8. The vendors are great and you can see many new products.

9. Someone you know will lose money in a gaff game (monte, card flipping, coin tosses) and you get the pleasure of telling them how they were just conned.

10. Even the wife/girlfriend will love the action environment.

11. We all want the DCC to continue and need to support it. If the casino venue is that bad, then we can all let Greg know while we are at the event.

Those are excellent points, even #10. lol

I have a feeling that it will be a quality event and hope that I don't miss the opportunity to be there.

If someone wants to share a room for the entire event, I will consider going, even if I sleep on an air mattress or futon. I really feel like playing this year, and have been practicing a bit. If anyone needs a roommate at a reasonable price, PM me.

P.S., I don't snore. :D

I was reading this while I'm at work, and I was bored so I just thought I'd throw in my two cents. I love the DCC and I love pool, but I doubt some gianormous pool tour involving Harrah's Casinos will grow out of it. That being said LET'S ALL support the DCC for the great event that it is and enjoy what we've got. I'll be there near the last weekend of the event.

I have been thinking about the Derby City Classic for a while now, just trying to make a decision as to go or not.

The DCC is the tournament of the year for most of us, in that there are so many different things that we can choose to participate in. I'm not going to list all of the things that you all know are there but I might ask you what in particular attracts you to the Derby City Classic?

I like the fact that I might get to play one of a hundred different professional pool players in a single tournament; the inexpensive cost for that match is lagniappe. It is always a lot of fun to belly up to the table with a professional even if you get an old fashion whipping. It's more fun when you give one and you have a heck of story to tell when you get home.

For the most part, we here on AZ Billiards are amateur pool players. We don't depend upon pool tournmanents or sponsors for our main income.

The Derby City Classic is at a crossroads in my opinion. This crossroads has unlimited potential. I don't know how many of you are aware that Harrah's Properties owns the Horseshoe Casino & Hotel where this year's Derby City Classic is being held.

Harrah's has 54 different casino properties.

If we show up in numbers at this tournament this year and obtain a free Harrah's Card, spend a little money eating and drinking, playing poker, playing pool; oh and maybe a little gambling at their table games or slots, it is possible that something REALLY BIG could happen. Can you imagine if Harrah's likes the turnout at the Derby City Classic, what can happen? They could easily fund a NATIONAL TOUR. That National Tour could be held at Harrah's Casino properties the world over. If such a tour were to be funded by Harrah's, it could even bring pool to television. We've previously discussed what television advertising dollars can do for pool so I won't say more about that.

I've had some other things going on in my life that have side tracked me and I've been undecided about going to DCC. I know that Efren, Francisco, Ralph, Darren, Karen, Jeanette and a slew of other professional pool players will be there for sure.

What I really like about having the DCC at the Casino is that they have plenty of good food, lots of great security and plenty of clean bathrooms and nice hotel. Those are givens.

This year you can invite your better half to go to the DCC as a mini vacation. The pool rooms are all sold out at the Casino Hotel (at least for now). You can still get a room at the Holiday Inn a few miles away and the DCC will have a shuttle running back and forth from the HOliday Inn to the Tournament. In addition, you never know if the Horshoed Casino doesn't sell out all of their "gambler rooms", they may give the DCC some additional rooms.

There's a lot at stake right now, not just for the DCC but for pool in general. With the economy in the dumpster right now, casinos are looking at new revenue streams or at least at new target audiences. If the pool world shows up in the right numbers at this year's DCC, it could open the door to some awesome tournaments.

Look, it's plain as the nose on your face. The casinos have what we need to host big pool events: LARGE SPACE, GOOD FOOD, GREAT LODGING, SAFE ENVIRONMENT. They just don't now if they want us and we will have to show them that we are a valuable target audience. That doesn't mean that we all have to be "whales". We can just show up and have a good time without going off for the family's jewels. Like most pool players that gamble, I have had my time at the crap tables and the card tables. It doesn't hold the same interest for me that it once did. I can gamble in the casino or just have a nice meal there and never miss going off for my dollar.

Anyway, I believe I have made a decision to go even if it is only for a few days or the weekend. Now, I just have to decide when and where.

I know I have Roy, the Fish from Norway who doesn't care if he is putting out the seine or being put in the seine.

I have been playing in the local handicapped tournaments rather well but in the non-handicapped tournaments I have been sucking air.... go figure...
My individual matches with kindred spirits has been about even on the money for the last several months.

The GingerBread Man could be going and maybe I might get another glimpse of Pool Wars or maybe become a part of Pool Wars II. (J/k)

Maybe, I can get Fatboy to stake me against the Tooth. I'll be sure to borrow some beta blockers from SpiderWeb Comm. :D

It's getting close to Christmas and I have been trying to make a decision about going to the DCC as it is only a month away. With airlines begging for customers, there may be some cheap Internet flights available or I might get one of those "stand-by tickets" from my Delta Airlines buddy. :help:

Anyway, I think there is a lot at stake for pool with the DCC being held at a Harrah's property and hope to see you there.

Best Regards and Happy Holidays.

It's really simple:

If you love pool -- you must go.

The DCC is the biggest and bestest three-ring circus in pool and you'll kick yourself if you don't go (especially if this turns out to be the last one... and you missed it.)

This is the Johnston City of our era.

The very worst case is, that it'll be a little scaled down in terms of attendance, to where it was a few year ago. In a lot of ways, that's good thing. It means more tables available; shorter waiting times for matches to be drawn and called; more practice time to get used to the frippin' short banks; AND more tables to match up on.

For future years, the casino and Harrah's are going to do whatever they're going to do. And while I'm all for supporting the sport and Greg & Co., the real bottom line is: do it for yourself. It's a great time with something for everyone -- no two people have the same DCC experience: tournament play; sweating unbelievable matches; woofing; gambling; 1pocket and 14.1 challenges; cue sticks and gimcracks galore; seeing friends from all over the country; the HOF dinner; legends walking around left and right; pool everywhere you look. So do yourself a favor and go for a weekend, an event, or the whole shebang.

You won't regret it.

I am "supposed" to be able to share a room with a friend who has already made reservations, if I make the trip. I may wind up in the room by the pool (the cabinet in the AZ Room where another former marine spent a couple of nights) I think his name was something like "goingproin07". He was a bit smaller than I am but marines are taught to adapt. :D

I can vouch for Russ being a nice and funny guy to hang around with at the DCC but I don't know about the snoring part and would just take his word for that.

Is anyone going to play in the banks? I've been practicing my banks and it has been fun learning to bank a little better.
