The Derby City Straight Pool Challenge starts a week from today. This is its eighth year in one form or another. It was founded and run by Bob Jewett the first four years, but he has moved on and is spreading the straight pool gospel in bigger venues now. The sponsors for this years event are Greg Sullivan or Diamond Billiards; Stu Mattana; and Rich Klein. Thanks to them, we are going to be able to watch some more straight pool played by some of the world's best straight pool players.

While not a straight pool tournament, per se, it gives great players an opportunity to play and great fans an opportunity to watch. The players are allowed to pay $100 and take 12 chances for a high run. They rack 14 balls and take the 15th ball in hand and cue ball in hand and see how many balls they can run.

The eight players with the highest runs of the event then have a single eilimination tournament and all of the matches are recorded. The matches will start on Thursday and end on Saturday. Last year the players who qualified were John Schmidt, Johnny Archer, Mika Immonen, Ralf Souquet, Darren Appleton, Niels Feijen, Dennis Orcullo and Alex Pagulayan,

This year there are going to be some changes. The biggest change is that the players will be competing on 10 foot Diamonds. They are moving us out of the Straight Pool Room and into the open balcony areas upstairs overlooking the main floors. There will be two tables on one side and J.R. Calvert and Inside Pool will be live streaming those tables and there will be two tables on the other side and Big Truck will be at least recording those tables. For at least the early part of the tournament, we will have access to 4 tables. We are starting one day earlier this year and the qualifying rounds now start on Saturday.

The reason we are starting earlier is because by Tuesday we will have competition for those four tables as Jay Helfert will be running his 10 ball tournament there also, which starts up on Tuesday. So we will have exclusive use of the tables, as needed for Saturday, Sunday and Monday, but we are not sure how much access we will have on Tuesday. Because of that, we are first encouraging everyone to get their qualifiers done early because they may not get the chance late. Secondly, we are using an extra day for qualifiers and considering Tuesday/Wednesday as one day for purposes of the daily prizes since we figure we may only get 50% of the usage of the tables. There will be daily high run prizes of $300, $200, and $100 for first, second, and third place. These will be awarded for 1) Saturday; 2) Sunday; 3)Monday; and 4) Tuesday/Wednesday. In addition there will be a $1,000.00 prize for the high run of the event.

I know that some of you don't like the fact that ten footers are being used, but we are using the golden rules and the guy with the most gold made the rule. I really don't want this to turn into a thread of whether or not you agree with the decision to use ten footers. That thread was already done. This thread is merely to inform you of what we are doing so you can watch if you like. We are optimistic that we can get some good straight pool for people to watch and we are going to do our best to work within the parameters we were given. We like watching good players play good straight pool and we like the opportunity to give some of them a fair payday.

5x10 means i will stay home

thanks for the info.
i was on the fence about attending as a spectator. finding out that the 14.1 will be on 5x10 made it an easy decision for me to just stay home.

I always look forward to seeing straight pool played by the best players in the world regardless of venue table size etc. The only concern I have is how the setup will be for spectators. Maybe some of the seats up there that faced the main tournament floor will be set up to face the 10 footers. Seems like it might be problematic with spectators walking across to get to the seats though.

Wonderful

This is going to be great. Straight Pool should be played on 10 Ft. Tables. Kudos to Greg Sullivan, Diamond, Bob Jewett, and Everyone involved with making this a success over the past years.

Let the games begin. Should be fun. Wow, Derby City is just five days away. This is exciting!

9' vs 10'

I hope that I am wrong but I do believe that the high runs will be lower than in the past because of the 10 foot tables. That will be a good stat to keep. I hope Dennis & Bill are going to record the #'s & compare. Will be very interesting to see the results.

Will there be a live stream?

Inside Pool and J.R. Calvert will be set up on one side and will live stream at least one table.

Big Truck will be set up on the other side and will at least tape everything. There has been a problem with bandwidth in the past. If there is enough bandwidth, he will probably live stream, too.

We will bring some camcorders as back up to make sure everything gets taped. Heck, if there was enough bandwidth, I could live stream a table with my laptop.

It should be a lot more spectator friendly. Lots more room. Chairs can be easily turned around. You can come in through the back door and not bother the players. There are also two doors to each of the narrow rooms with the 10 footers so you can come in away from the action. Should not be too disturbing.

Mike: I would be awfully surprised if the runs were not lower. Tougher to play on a ten footer. Last year we had 10 guys that had runs over 100 and only eight of them qualified. A few years back, the number 8 player qualified with a 73. Heck, a 50 might even qualify this year. We will have to see what kind of a turn out and how well the tables play and how quickly the guys get used to them.

On the other hand, Max Eberle recently had a 99 on a ten footer. You have to think that Darren, Ralf, Danny, Alex, Dennis, Johnny and others have a shot at running 100.

Ten foot tables! How wonderful, Dennis. Too bad we couldn't bring back the ghost of Jimmy Karas.

Marop and Elvicash and Rich 93 are already there, scoping out the venue.

Tight Pockets on the ten footers. I see Thorsten is there. I hope he gives it a try.

We got $7,250.00 added money. Let's see how we can give it away.

Qualifiers start tomorrow am. I hope to be there by noon, if not sooner.

Later....

Updates pls about the current highest ranked guys with their numbers:D

Stuart Pettman has the high run so far with a 117 he also has a run of 100. I believe he is the only player to run over 100.

I might have heard it incorrectly, but I believe one of the announcers on the stream said this week was the first week Stuart ever played straight pool in his life. Not sure if true, or just another tale...

Pettman

I watched his 14.1 match this morning against a Dutch kid that had taken 8th place in the 14.1 attempts totals. That was a great match. Pettman is a great, great shot maker, which comes from his snooker experience, plus he would be use to playing on 10' or larger. The Dutch (Justin ?) kid was a snooker player too and should could of won the match but missed a break shot with only needing 18 balls for the win. For some reason I am pulling for Pettman to win the tournament. A unknown......... would be nice.
