Heard a RUMOR they have moved the location of the Desert Shootout from The Sheraton Hotel to another location. Anyone know anything about this?

Moved Venue

The venue has moved per Chuck Bobbitt!

Now playing at Kolby's Billiards

Hotel: Quality Inn
1375 E University
Tempe, Az
480-774-2500
75 + tx

Hotel is across the parking lot from the biliards room.

This location is approx. 6 mi from the airport.

Hope this helps

(no idea what else has changed)

This cannot be right

This has to be some bullshit...if that is true, Kolby's would be an ok choice, but it's a small venue for a UPA event. From a logistical point of view, it is a nightmare for fans trying to see certain matches. The players would be crowding each other, and some of the tables are still a bit out of shape. Mainly, Kolby's is a great place to play pool, but I don't know about a sanctioned UPA tournament being held there. It would be like an old school throwback tournament, especially since it's $25,000 added, which is pretty exciting, but what about all the players who are expecting to play on Diamonds, the players who reserved rooms 30-60 min away at the Sheraton, and what about all the people who will go to the Sheraton thinking the tournament is there? Maybe some players will show up at the Sheraton not knowing there was a switch. It's easy to get lost going from Tempe to North Phoenix, so if unfamiliar players did make reservations at the Sheraton, they're going to be pissed. If the event has less than 50 players, it can go off without any real trouble because Kolby's can handle that many, but more than that is going to suck. I cannot think of anywhere else in the valley you can have a good tourney though, Kolby's is about as close as you're gonna get, but this is supposed to be the biggest event in AZ for a long time, which is why a hotel made sense. To change that though, blows. I already bought a 4-day pass, so I'm going no matter where it is, but news like this is disappointing.

Yep

I just called Chuck Bobbit, he confirmed this event was moved to Kolby's. He said the host hotel (The Sheraton) gave him some problems that couldn't be fixed. Now that I think about all my earlier *****ing, this may turn out pretty good if it's like the Dust Off was in 07, which was crowded and exciting. I don't care much where these guys play as long as I can sweat the matches.

This is 10000% accurate, I was told this by people who are running the event on the phone 30 minutes ago. I wont mention any names as I dont have permission, but I want to make sure peope dont think this is a rumor. Unless something has changed in the past 30 minutes its gonna be at Kolby's. There was a dispute with the hotel for alot of $$$, I mean ALOT. I was suppost to be there today for the pool school but I''m not able to travel yet,

If I learn more I'll update it.

Not to hi-jack your thread Coco, but Tony C opened one on this subject
about an hour ago (E S Time). Check it out. Jay responds to it.

Anyone out there who knows players who are coming to this tournament, please let them know of the change in venue and hotel. We are depending on the internet and cell phones to reach everyone.

Kolby's is actually much closer to the airport. There will be someone at the Sheraton to inform any players who show up there tomorrow. We are trying to cover all our bases, but any help is appreciated.

This is absolutely crazy!! Only 2 days away and the venue moves all the way across town.

How are you going to fit all of us in? Kolby's is a good venue, so I just guess we'll all see.

btw, I just saw Efren playing 1 pocket at Alexander's. Unbelievable!!!!

freezer just called

he told me they are useing 11- 9 footers and the tournament is at KOLBYS now. the hotel wanted a crazy amount of cash up front to ashure them they would fill up! so they just moved the tourny! WOW:eek:

Far from a disaster

It's going to be fine.....Kolby's is going to move some tables around, and make more room for the spectators.

When your handed lemons....make lemonade.

C Cowboy....your certainly not helping!!!! Mentioning the tournament...along with the word DISASTER....describing it.

That much is for sure.....

Well Rick opinions are like noses, you have your, and I have mine. I do not see anything good on the horizon, as I feel the parties putting this even on should have had their Ducks in a Row long before 48 before the Tournament Date.

I would love to know the real story behind the move to Kolby's, from what was set in stone for months, and now 48 hours from start time, gets moved.

Something is not right when an event is moved from one venue, to another venue on such short notice. Yes Kolby?s is a fine place, and apparently JIMMY Kolby?s Owner has bailed out another event. Like he has been doing for ever it seems. Jimmy is always bailing out someone event on short notice, and allowing them to use his facility.

I would like to nominate Jimmy the Owner of Kobly's ?s for the position of honorary Fire Captain to the Pool Community, as he seem to be always coming to the Rescue, and putting out a Fire.

I think you are an Optimist Rick, and I am a Realist knowing the history of Pool Events where thing hjust did not go as promissed. Remembering the recent fiasco with the IPT.

Worry all you want....

Read what Fatboy said....if you want to know what happened.

There isn't anything top secret going on....it is, what it is.

I'll be there having a good time.....that much I'll make sure of. Watching world class pool, and seeing some good friends.

Hotel is RIGHT nextdoor...

Not worried the slightest....

Shootout Update and Info

First a big thanks to all the people who have been productively spreading the word of the sudden venue and hotel change for the Shootout. It is in the best interest of pool, the players, the producer (who is an honest to god good guy ). This situation was not caused by Chuck Bobbitt. I want everyone to know that. While yes he is ultimately the person responsible to make sure this event takes place...he has worked his butt of the past 24 hours and has been successful to save the event despite the problems with the Crescent. So...anyone playing or anyone who knows a person who is playing or planning to attend...please let them know immediately. Chuck will have someone at the Crescent redirecting as well as is trying to have someone at each baggage claim at all the terminals at the Phoenix airport with signs directing.

The only difference that will take place at Kolby's vs. Crescent is that the event will be played on Gold Crowns not Diamonds...they did consider moving all the GC's out, but that was not ideal as so much else had to be accomplished in a short time frame. The venue is not as oppulent, but that is just frosting...the added money still exists, the players still exist, the game still exists.

It is true...a persons character is demonstrated when the going gets rough...do they tuck tail and run when a stumbling block comes their way or do they become stronger, not whine, and get moving to find solutions.

Chuck Bobbitt showed his character in the past 24 hours when he was faced with a problem...that he has great character and is s fighter to make everything right...and he is succeeding.

again here is the address of the new location and hotel:

Now playing at Kolby's Billiards (Which is next to the Quality Inn)

Hotel: Quality Inn
1375 E University
Tempe, Az
480-774-2500
75 + tx

PS...Cocobolo Cowboy knows nothing, is not privy to anything, is not part of the tournament, and honestly is just one of those people who feel the need to just stir up negativity to make himself feel important. Anything that comes from him is pure rot and to be taken for what it is...nothing. I know who you are Coco and always have! Stop your crap now!

I posted this in another thread, but I figured I'd add it here. For all my fellow programmers out there.

That's Fantastic BigCat!!

Now I just wish I could

I was at Kolby's tonight hitting balls. They moved all of the bar tables out and put bleachers in. They also recovered at least one table that I know of, and there are all brand new balls (Aramith TV sets with the measle cue ball). I am assuming the balls are the UPA's. Anyway, with such short notice, I think they've done a pretty damn good job of accommodating the tournament!

I can't find a thread, though I am sure there are many.

WHEN does it start?

JAM

Sometimes guys I am not all there. Please ignor the thread I started adding just info about my experience at the players meeting. I forgot this one was going. Basically a great turn out considering how things have been for the past two days. I think lots of people here in town and out of town have pulled together to make this happen and although I am not the promoter of this event I would like to thank all who have helped out to make this happen. All the top names are here so if you can get out of work for the day today I suggest you take advantage of this and get over to Kolby's Corner pocket. That is where I will be until they kick me out.

After the draw they posted the matches on the board. First matches are at 12, next round after begins at 1:30.

Earl Vs Danny Smith (Tucson Peachauer Tour stop winner) at 1:30 today. Should be GREAT match. Not too mention ALL the others!

Get off your ass, or out of work, and come watch the best in the world. This sort of thing don't happen often, especially right in your own backyard.
