Different Hit with or without Fiberpad

Hey Folks, I want to know your MAIN about a different Hit when using a Fiberpad between a IVORY Ferrell and LAMINATED Tip or without the Fiberpad.
Thanks,
Ralf:grin:

I think that the fiber pad serves a purpose to prevent the ferrule from splitting/cracking.

I can't answer if it changes the hit.

I like the thin black pad that Tony uses if i do have one put on. I don't feel a difference if it's thin and get the protection for the ivory ferrule.

all my Shafts have Ivory Ferrells and a Fiberpad. Now it's time to change for the new ONYX Tip and I'm not sure to remove the Pad.

From what others have said on here, the pad keeps the ivory ferrule from flaring out after some time.

a fibre pad softens the hit a bit, though they do come in different grades i think

Hey Brother, keep the pad and everything will be alright. That pad is about .030 and should be replaced if you cut into it when replacing your tip. If you need some pads let me know.

Hey Bro,
I have alot Pad's here:wink:
I only want to know when you use a softer Laminated Tip is a different or not.
I think with medium or hard Tips is the same, but when using softer Tips that is softer then the Fiberpad it MUST be different the Hit or not??

Hi Ralf,

The pads do come in different grades. I have them on several of my ivory ferrules. I also have non padded ivory.

The basic reason to have the pads is so that when your tip starts to mushroom, it will not pull the ivory grain apart with it, which it has a tendency to do when the tip is glued directly to the ivory ferrule.

I have shafts that hit harder with the pads on at least two of my cues (soft tips), while the others seem to hit a little softer or the same (harder or non-laminated tips), so I think it depends on the pads you put on in combination with the tip. I usually use Kamui or Moori soft tips and it seems like the pads make the hit a little harder.

I honestly only owned one cue with ivory ferrules and no pad that cracked, and it was done before I got the cue. I think I actually prefer the hit of the ferrules without a pad, as I like a solid, but not too hard hit, but if I was putting tips on collectible cues, I think I would go with the pads, though.

Good luck, my friend!

Steve

Even though you are going with a softer tip, stick with the fiber pad on your Ivory ferrules.

If you are worried that the hit will be softer (and I believe it will be to a slight degree) you could always use a carbon fiber pad. That is what Predator puts on the BK2 break cue under the phenolic tip to keep the ferrule from shattering. It is way stronger than a regular pad, and very hard. It is a touch thicker than a regular pad. You can identify it by what looks like a sort of checkerboard weave pattern on the top surface. My only problem is finding these. I want to buy some but I'm having trouble sourcing them.

Hope it helps,

Contact Roy at OB cue, I believe they uses the Carbon Fiber pad on their cues/shafts, a very nice gentleman I might say:smile:

Depending on the thickness of the pad, you can also lightly reface it if you are just wanting to change the tip. I found that it really depends on the pad material, thickness and type of tip as to whether it will soften the hit.

I would keep the pad for an ivory ferrule...it's like an insurance policy.

Ralf, I do not think that you can tell the difference if the pad is applied to an Ivory Ferrule. In my opinion Ivory is one of the hardest hitting ferrule materials used, and with that said I doubt that any difference can be felt with or without a pad no matter what material the pad is made from.

All I use on my playing cues are Ivory Ferrules, I think that the main consideration when using an Ivory Ferrule should be deflection and this can vary depending upon the installation method used for the ferrule. If anything by adding a pad to an Ivory Ferrule it should stiffen up the hit in some small way, although I do not think anyone could feel it.

The blue, red or blk pads from atlas make it hit softer imo.

You could certainly be right, however, I can't tell the differance. I have tried a number of different pads, because I do like a pad on my Ivory ferrules. I have also experimented with no pad on Ivory and I have never been able to feel a differance between Ivory with or without a pad. However, I have noticed a differance when using certain tips, for myself at least none layered tips seem to hit harder in the begining than layered tips do, but once they are broken it I can no longer tell the differance. I use Ivory ferrules on all of my cues and I have for many years, I love the feel when using Ivory and the deflection has never really been a problem for me, because I can't play anyway!!!!!!!!!
