Do Diamond tables bank shorter than other tables ?

On the same note, I'd be curious to hear how well does the feel for banks transfer from one condition to another?

Let's say, hypothetically, that a player, that we shall call Johnny, practices banks on the very same table for a year. He knows that other tables bank differently, but he nevertheless practices only a certain table. He knows the theory about spin transfer, the effect of speed and throw induced spin and so on. Eventually he becomes somewhat of an expert banker on his practice table. One day he plays banks on a completely different table which behaves differently (but consistently). It'll take a while to adjust to that table, but should his banking on the new table become comparable to what he does on his practice table?

It's easy to imagine that he quickly notices how the other table banks and knows how to adjust to those differences, but will he be able to see and feel the banks after some amount of shots or is he just going to see his banks on his practice table and making some rough adjustment based on the shots he's made on the other table?

There are many contributing factors that control the speed of the cushions and the banks. Some factors are in the environment in which the table is, such as how clean the balls are, what's used to clean the balls, how clean is the cloth, is it vacuumed or not.

Some of the factors start at the factory level, type of cushions, type of cloth, design of rails.

Then you have the cushion and cloth manufactures, not all cushions are the same, and neither is cloth, yet both have contributing factors.

Compound all this by introducing a mechanic to the situation who's not all that experienced...who how has control over changing the cushions and cloth...over and over.

No one can say GC's play correctly in lumping them all together because they started out as GC's. Any GC that has had the cushions change...is a changed GC from the factory production model.

Diamonds have changed over time since they were first put into production, and are continuing to change...until there is nothing left to change.

There is such a thing as the perfect playing table, I know as I've made after market changes to GC's and Diamonds that have made them play perfect...but that's my job.

Without spilling the beans so to speak, there's more to changing how a pool table plays than just changing the cushions and cloth. These changes are my trade secrets and I have shared them with a few other mechanics, Mark Gregory being one.

What does it say about Brunswick GC's when I can take any GC, 1-5 and make the speed off the cushions, and the banks play even better than when it was manufactured new? Does it mean Brunswick didn't know what they were doing when they manufactured the table? No, it just means that I can take the same rails and the same cushions and align them to play better because I have a different understanding of the rail design than Brunswick does...that's all, the same with Diamond.

Changes take time;)

Do Diamonds Bank Short

For anyone who grew up playing on GC 1 2 and 3 yes they usually bank shorter , the good news is if you bank by systems its pretty easy to figure out how much short the table plays, also you can make some hold up banks and reverse angle banks that are nearly impossible on the old Gold crowns for some reason. If anyone knows why I am interested. I also noticed that a lot of how a table plays is due to the way it was set up . I played in a room that had mutiple 9 foot Diamond tables and 2 of them were close to each other the way they played , one was a half diamond short on 3 rail kicks and the other was a full diamond short from the first Would I be correct if I thought this was due to the rails not being square ? Thanks In advance.

I don't mind them banking short, that's an easy adjustment. I mind that the english doesn't take like on a Brunswick. You know the shot...side pocket bank where you go long on the pocket with extreme inside english and it goes in the opposite side pocket. Doesn't work on a Diamond.

I think it's just like porage. This one's too hot. That one's too cold. For me the Diamond is just right.

According to the Diamond rep my friend talked to in Vegas, Diamond banks correctly, the others bank long.:p Yes, they bank shorter than GC's.

What you just said, is the last 100 years of pocket tables should of banked like a Diamond does now, if that's true I would like to know why the greats (Lassiter, Mosconi, Caras, Balsis, Crane, Ronnie Allen etc.) never complained about it? The natural two rail cross side/cross corner does NOT happen on a Diamond. So your above comment says that its not supposed to happen, what's your logic/what someone else said?

I wouldn't bet money on the double reverse cross side bank shot NOT being able to be made on a Diamond table with Greg Sullivan...if I were you;)

Either would I and I never implied it wasn't available, but the steep angle you have to hit the second rail completely changes the shot and feels unnatural to players that have played on tables over 40 years that did. The two rail banks on a Diamond play very similar to a extremely wet table in New Orleans with out air conditioning. And, Glen, you ever coming to Colorado, or are you eventually going to come to CO :).
