I suppose if the center got deep enough and I didn't have any new chalk to replace it I would just take it out to the street and scrape the corners down on the asphalt or in the gutter. You could also grind or cut down the corners to level with a Dremel tool. I'm guessing either method would take about a minute.
That's what I do.
When the rim of the cavity can touch the ferrule, I abrade the top away on the concrete gutter - I don't like to clean the blue dust after sanding fileing or sawing.
This is the way to do it
I wrap the chalk with clear electrical tape, it fits perfectly around the paper. Then as the chalk wears down and the hole gets to deep I put a rough file over my 5 gallon garbage bucket and file the cube down to where the dimple looks like new.
You can keep doing this many times. Also the clear tape over the paper keeps it looking like new. I can buy the clear tape at the local Ace hardware store and they have it located near the glues and tapes.

I apply chalk correctly. I shave it with a razor knife when the outer edges neave the paper get too much higher than the ccenter and it starts leaving chalk on my ferrule. I cut the paper first and then shave with the blade. It is quick and easy. Chalk is cheap, but why use only half of it?

I have to admit it, I've cut down some BD chalk. It expensive and I want to use it all. When the hole gets deep I put the chalk in a little hand clamp and use a cordless saw to cut about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch off the top. Works great.
I actually like the way the 1/2 cube of chalk feels in my hand. Easier to put on.

Efren Reyes uses an elk master tip- and folks he can be seen regularly licking the fingers ,and spinning the cue. Before chalking. It has been popular since like 1985. Archer still uses elk master too. Shane Van B. got his reputation after he beat Lee for 5.$ (they both were in SD. I got the chalk tip from Lee. If he sayes its so I just follow along. And Shane never stopped practicing since. Lee H. is the best player here, and if he lived in your state he'd be 1 of the best too - without even playing pool at all. He came from Calif. and is known there too.

when the chalk gets almost to where you can't really use it well....take a hammer and a punch turn the chalk upside down and place the punch in the center of the chalk and hit it with the hammer. Take the paper off first though. Then hope you come away with a piece you can use.
Last year I picked up Mike Sigel's IPT 8-ball video, and one of the things I learned was chalking in a swiping motion with one hand instead of drilling into the chalk. The chalk seems to last longer, and has a bigger surface area for chalking. I recalled Kevin Trudeau making a pitch about things that you're not supposed to know. Maybe this was one of them, how to chalk properly and elegantly.
It'd be a tough chore chalking your cue while holding that cube of chalk in TWO hands

I use blue dimond and don't want to waste any of it so i cut the paper off the sides about .100 at a time chalk lasts about 2 to 3 months , works well till last night, was in prosess of cutting .100 of paper from my .350 thick piece of chalk , the chalk slipped cut a .347 deep gash in my bridge finger , in doing this I knocked my cue off the table i was working putting a major ding in my new shaft , on the way to the floor after the major ding the cue hits the yorkie , he screams like his you know what is cought in his zipper , the wife jumps up screaming at meee what the F did I do to her dog , so how much is a cube of this dang chalk . hope this helps :grin-square:

If the hole is deep, you are not chalking properly. You are screwing it on in the center and not wiping the chalk across the tip..

I do a similar cut down when my BD starts to get a deep hole, but ....
Since I use a pocket chalker, I whack off the top 1/8" or 3/16" with a band saw (less mess than using a hack saw or coping saw), then put a small wood square into the bottom of the vinyl holder the same thickness as the amount of chalk that I've cut off, so the chalk still sits in the holder as it originally did.
Works great for me.
