Do you breathe in or out when you shoot?

You really do exhale when shooting guns? you must be a bad shooter then :D hehe.

Well I am trained for shooting, ive been in the army for 12 years, went to so many military schools that trains shooting, M-16, and Beretta 9-mil. and I can tell you this, first thing they are going to teach you for shooting is that when you want to shoot, you really do have to Mute Breathing while you aim/shoot.

Deep breath, let half out, then squeeze (never pull) the trigger. My training...

Funny, thinking about it, I carried this over to pool.

Just at the first phase of breathing out.
I had best results with my students when I taught them to implement the pause in the backstroke- which is not that easy at the start- to inhale during the practice strokes, hold the breath while pulling back the cue and pause and exhale when you shoot.

Yoda says, "If aware of breath you are, miss you will. To be unconscious, it is best."

Or like my grandma used to say, "Shoot the ball in the hole, ya blabbering idiot, all that mental crap is for the sucker racking the balls."

Or like a guy who once beat me many years ago said, "Remember to breath. You haven't missed in an hour, but I think your breathing isn't in tune with your circadian rhythm. Also, turning your left foot another 4.5 degrees will help." Couldn't make a dang ball after that.

note: quotes allegedly pertaining to reality more closely approximate a fictional effigy of adumbrational stratums. The woolgathering of unpremeditated willy-nilly leavens me benumbed introspectively.

I remember reading a while ago about a famous golfer who was asked that question if he breathed in or out when he was making a shot. He then said that he played much worse after that question because he couldn't concentrate about the shot, all he was thinking about was his breathing.

I guess this could be true for billiards. It's kinda of an odd question, I'm pretty sure I breathe in when I shoot...

Wondering if this is the same with everybody else...

With all due respect to all the gun shooters, IMHO the only good answer
is " I don't know, and I don't care".

lol

i hold my breath until my eyes cross..... lol! seriously though, using golf as an example it is taught that you should hold your breath on your final stroke as it the pressure in your diaphragm holds your sternum in place, this steadies your body an eliminates any unwanted movement.

but then again mr. myagi once said.....breathe danielsan......innnnn....outttttt...innnn...outttttt.......

The gun shooting and bow shooting analogy was dead on. To ensure that there is as few variables, (read: moving parts), it's best to execute the stroke at the natural pause in breath after your exhale.

Breathing is one of the basic fundamentals of good marksmanship. Soldiers are trained to fire the round at that natural pause in breath. (of course when in a firefight, much of this goes out the window in favor of just getting lead downrange) If you begin to implement this in your shooting routine, it will not take long until you are doing it naturally and without thought.

You aren't really holding your breath, (doing so causes muscles to begin contracting and you become tense), but it's a very small natural pause in between your exhale and your next inhale.

Can't hurt to try it, and if it works, great! If not, then JoeW had some good advice too. Let your body tell you when it's right to "pull the trigger".

This is one of the first things we were taught on the rifle range in basic training. It goes like this.....BREATHE - RELAX - AIM - SLACK - SQUEEZE.....

The slack is where you take out the play in the trigger before squeezing off the round.

Same thing can apply to your pre shot routine in pool. Ever notice Buddy Hall's "slack" on his backstroke before pulling the trigger.

on soft and med shot i dont think it matters, but on power shot i think out so i can explode through the ball

I was taught to exhale out and then pull the trigger. Also, not to talk when you're down on a shot. I'm assuming that talking allows for holding up a lot of air in your lungs.

Do I breathe in or out when I shoot? ..... Yes. (Troll answer, sorry.)

Actually, I believe I hold my breath, but I never thought about it. Now it will drive me nuts.

Breathing

I was lucky to have a NRA Master(.22,.38, and .45) pistolero as a dad.
Got this nugget at about 8 or 9yrs old: Take medium size breath, release half of it, fire. If done correctly, you can maintain rock-steady sight picture with ease.
