Does Anyone Here Shoot With A Cheapie Pool Cue?

Hey Guys :)

I know that Efren is well known for having played for a good number of years with a cue stick that is around the value of about ?13 and so, it got me to wondering if there are many players on here, who shoot with a budget priced cue stick? :)

I have been contemplating on returning to a low bught cue stick and just customising it a little to my own preferences, like the shaft diametre, etc, but I'm on the 50 yard line about this at the moment as I would like something more upscale, but whilst my bankroll don't permit that, I'd be perfectly happy to shoot with a low-end priced cue stick :), after all, it doesn't matter the value of the cue stick you're shooting with, because you still gotta shoot the balls into the holes :)

What are your thoughts on this? :)

Check your post and get those figures correct on Efren's cue. I think cues become much more playable once you're around $80 and up (new)... generally you can get a players or something like that for around there. Otherwise, most cues that are somewhat reputable can be found in the $200-$500 range, more than that and you're just paying for a neat looking cue. I've shot with a McDermott that was like $250 new for a long time now, and I don't really think a new cue will make my skill jump at all. The big difference when looking for a cue is the hit. Something flimsy like a Mucci will give you a whole lot of action (if you have a stroke) while there are other cues that hit more... solid I guess, and don't have as much whip to them.

when you jump way up in price sometimes you are just paying for a name or the looks of cue but I gurantee that if you ever hit with a Tascarella or some Southwests, Josswest, or Szamboti' s you will see that they play great. Even the most novice player can tell the difference. I have hit with a hundred different cues and yes there are some lower budget cues that play great as well. I have a predator sneaky pete that has a 3/8 11 pin, and it plays as good as any top of the line predator cues imo. As for any known players that play with a cheaper cue, I saw Larry Price play last year in a big set and it looked like he was playing with a J&J hustler or similar cue and I could count the balls he missed on my hands.............

He did not stutter about Efren's cue. He indeed payed the equivalent of $13 in pesos for it. But it sure was worth more than that.

Archer playes with a Scorpion Cue, and wins alot of pro events, I have one he gave me a year ago, he used it for a year and it hits the balls real nice. Because it was a cue he used for a year or longer it has senimental value to me so I dont travel with it because I cant repace it, but I hit balls wit hit from time to time, or let friends who come over use it(not bangers but players) they all seem to like it. Johnnys new cue is too light for me.

I'd say a couple hundred bucks is plenty for a good quality playing cue. I could play with a $100 cue if it was straight and had a reasonable taper and tip.

As for Efrens cues, I'd say if you handed him a $10 cue and he played a few racks with it , it's probably worth at least a couple hundred bucks now. :)

Hey Guys :), thanks for your replies so far :)

As reguards the value of Efren's original cue stick, It's purely a complete guess and is not the point of my post :)

I've used a cue stick before that only cost about $60 and I ran a 100+ balls in straight pool with it, whereas alot of high end cues I've owned and shot with, (Inluding a Meucci Gambler 2, that I had for 6/7 years) I wasn't getting the same results with any of them, which is making me consider the possibility of going back to a basic 2 piece cue stick, and just customising it, by having new ferrules and tips put on, shave a little off the taper, etc :)

I have had several higher end cues but I LOVE my new $50 Action sneaky pete. I had the shaft taken down a little. It came with a nice layered tip. Hits like a champ. I also have an old Nick Varner cue that I bought directly from Mr. Varner. That has been my main cue for around 7-8 years and no matter what I have bought over the years to replace it I have always returned to that cue. I can't help it... it hits real solid. The guys pick on me about it all the time because they are all spending the BIG bucks for Scruggs, Predators etc... I have given up on buying expensive cues. My Dale Perry hits pretty good but I doubt if I'll use it much.

Yeah :0 lol, Efren is just that kinind of player that you could give him a $10/$20 cue and would wind up winning a tournament with it :) lol, but in saying that the guy is a pheonominal player :)

Yep me too...

Im playing with an old JW cue.

Probably only worth $1500 or so. When I get settled I will probably go back to my Tasc.

My break cue is VERY inexpensive!!!!!

I break with a ummmmm, lol I dont even know what it is. I think its an imported cue from asia. I paid 80 bucks for it. It breaks good, but the shaft is warped now and it still breaks great!!!!!!
My scotch partner (who is a top player in my area) broke with it one time, and he was impressed on how well it breaks the balls. Then he noticed the shaft is warped and he never touched it again. LOL
I still break with it. Oh, and its a jump also. Its a great little cue.
My player is a custom. A Clark Smith cue. It hits the balls sweet. I think it was 325.00. I have been offered some good money for the cue, but I would never sell it because its not replaceable. (also it has sentimetal value to me)(My dad actually surprised me at christmas)
Just bought an omen. Havent played with it much yet. Paid 375.00. Nice little cue. I have a plain janer type of taste. There are some gorgeous cues out on the market, but just not my style. I say, "if the cue hits good, thats all you need".

My own cue is somewhat expensive, but there's a local at my poolhall who doesn't own a cue... he always pulls a house stick off the wall, and will runout with it. He's at least an A/A+ player, and only plays on tight pockets.

He's got one or two of the house cues that he always uses, so that he's somewhat familiar with what he's shooting with. But it just goes to show that it really doesn't matter what you play with or what it looks like, as long as you are shooting with something you're familiar with and that works for you.

got me a 20$ cheapo budweiser stick from spencers, with a hundred dollar willicue shaft on it and a sniper tip. Same taper as my schon and it hits awesome. Great for bars and places i dont like taking my schon with me.

I play with a low end predator now that plays as good as anything as you can imagine. I was never very picky though. If i know the tip is shaped how i like it and the cue isnt defective in any way, i really do not have a a strick preference. As long as i am used to something there shouldnt be a big issue, and im fortunante to have that baked into me so when i am playing bad i can focus on my game, and not blame any of the playing conditions. In fact,i have never once in my entire time playing had any reason to believe a cue i played with caused a missed shot or botched position play. It makes things a lot easier.

I played with a $30 Duffrin Seaky Pete and an old bottom of the line Viking (mostly for 14.1) that I paid $55 for with a leather case at a flea market. I used both of them for oner 20 years. If it feels right to you and the tip is good that's as good as a cue is going to help you IMO. Johnnyt

IMHO, once you get past the wal-mart cues, into the Fury to Lucasi entry level cue range, you are there in terms of playability. Once there, a cue really isn't gonna make or break a player.

CUES DO NOT POCKET BALLS, PLAYERS DO. DROP THE NONSENSE. SOLID MEANS NOTHING, A LOT OF ACTION MEANS NOTHING. PLAYABLE MEANS NOTHING. HOW LONG HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN PLAYING IN BIG TOURNAMENTS. ??????? GET REAL. CUES GET PLAYABLE AROUND 80 DOLLARS. GET REAL. AND YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN PLAYING FOR A LONG TIME. GIVE ME A BREAK.
HIT, WHAT HIT, EVERY CUE GETS HIT, SO WHAT.

As long as I have a Predator shaft on it I don't care how much the cue cost...

I have some nice/expensive cues because I could afford them and felt like spoiling myself a little and to explore a bit and not because my game needed them. but nowadays I mostly play with a $250 Lucasi with a Predator shaft.
My $80 Dufferin is my favorite non Predator cue.
