Does Barry Berhman endorse barring people traveling through?

It was hard to believe when it was happening too

Not saying it didn't happen, but I have been in the room 12-15 times on my three visits out to Virginia Beach. The place, Q-MASTERS is one of the best in the U.S. ! Always treated nice and always played in the backroom. Please don't badmouth one of the few rooms(and owner) that has done and still continues to do a lot for pool. I'll bet next time you are in there you will have no problem at all. Another thing, if you want to play in the back, you better play good, because they have some very good shooters. I can not believe any business in the Norfolk area does not bend over backwards for our military men and families, shoot that is their main income.

I'm not badmouthing it, I have stated several times that I DO NOT believe Barry would have let this happen had he been there. It was just unbeliveable to me that the Yankee Stadium of pool rooms would have these dead beat kids working there and representing the business to the public. Those kids need to take those huge gage hoop earings out of your ears, put down the meth and get back in college. And I do play good enough to be back there, I won the friggin tournament with the second highest possible handicap and I gambled with Bill Duggan for 3-4 hours, like 8 sets, losing 2 sets in the end. Shook his hand and talked for a little bit afterwards. Gentlemen gambling. I heard that the manager and the staff from Jan'07 are now gone. I will go back and play some more the next time the Navy sends me there on orders, where else would I go if I were Norfolk?

Where do you come up with this kind of crap? If a B player won it would he obviously be better than a B player? what about a C player?
With this reasoning every player that won would never be allowed to play again:confused: or would be raised immediately to a higher ranking and everybody would be pissed off at them??????????????????

Actually, Scott's got a valid point. I have been in a weekly bar tournament ranked as an A player, and so many other players would complain, that the owner/tourney director had to bump me up to AA. Even though, he felt I was rated correctly. After all, he was the one who rated everyone in the tournaments. At one point, I was rated AAA, and people wanted me bumped up to Semi-Pro.
I am in no way a Semi-Pro player, and the owner/TD knows it. But, when enough players complain and threaten not to play in the tournament because they think I am rated too low.....the owner/TD has to appease the masses. Even if they are complete idiots.

They need to have a rule that leaves bumping people up as a last resort, and have people request themselves to be bumped down if they don't feel like theyre good enough. Let's see how many people go up and say "i suck i need a handicap" as opposed to arrogant bangers who think theyre awesome and that when they lose it's always the other guy who needs to be bumped up. This way you don't punish the good player just because the sucky player whines.

Actually, you'd be surprised. I have actually seen players asked to be bumped up because they felt they should be rated higher.
And some players claimed that being rated higher would elevate their game.

I didn't mind getting bumped up because it did force me to play better, but it came to a point where I felt like I was throwing my money away when I was rated too high to stand a chance of winning.

Can't Remember

Does anyone know the guy with one eye guy that plays with the tree limb looking, crooked cue who plays at Q-Master? The dude plays good. The butt of his cue, you'd have to see it, I don't even know how to explain it.

Actually, all this racial stuff is very easy to believe.

I have witnessed it before in the pool room, and i have witnessed it by the fans at the actual tournament.

When you have a match, and you have an American, and a foreigner, and everyone in the stands is shouting out racial obscenities, it's just disgusting.
It puts the tournament in the toilet IMO.

That is why i will never ever play in that tournament, and why i have not ever enjoyed that tournament since i watched a couple of choice displays on the fans and players parts.

If the workers act that way at the pool room towards certain people, and they don't get reprimanded for it, it means that the business owner also has that same attitude.

Just a bunch of ignorant people if you ask me.

Ron Z is his name. Not sure he'd approve me of posting his last name. He built the butt of his cue from an actual tree limb that had a bend where he would be placing his hand to hold the cue. He says he previously had a problem with his hand hitting the table when he was following through. He solved it by having an upward bend in the butt of the cue. :) He did a great job on it - sure plays good with it.

That was my point when I said that the employees usually mirror the attitude of the employer. I am surprised that I did not get flamed for what I said. For several years I have let what I see at the US Open go without comment. Felt like what the hell, who am I to comment when I am only a fan and not a great player. I have often heard comments about the Filipinos, sometimes encouraged by one great US player in particular.

Actually, your scenario isn't really THAT bad. I would guess that you would WANT to be in a phone booth or some kind of structure that offers the bear limited mobility. The harder it is for him to maneuver, the better off you are. Hope this helps.

That's what I like about this website, no matter what situation you encounter there is always someone with experience to help you out.

NO! At least I don't think so. Yours was probably an isolated situation and the manager was probably just trying to protect his "locals" and keep them coming back.

"I'd rather jack off a mad grizzly bear with a barb wire glove in a phone booth than take orders to that base!" You know, this last line in your post is likely to cause a posting war with John Schmidt. :D

Thank you for serving!

Posting War

I have to admit JoeyA, I used the eatin by a goat line the other day at work. It went over pretty well. I figure none of my co-workers are familar with this site so I should be safe. I got the one about the jacked off bear from the real Larry Benson, aka, Richie Richeson's road alter ego.

I'll set the scene. I'm in the Navy, I was about to transfer from Jacksonville, FL to Columbus, OH, but first I had to do a two week instructor course in Norfolk, VA.I was just hitting some balls, talking to some of the players I had met the other night, Bill Duggan and Junior, a fellow Sailor who plays pretty good and I get kicked out of the back room. I'd rather jack off a mad grizzly bear with a barb wire glove in a phone booth than take orders to that base!

You from Montana? - had an upset grizzly in my yard this fall so not sure the "rather" is a good idea.

You meet Jon Sv---- yet? He plays pretty good, he is in the Navy, understand he is an instructor at Norfolk, he is from Montana. Very nice guy who plays at Barry's place.

If you show up here we treat military good - Montana has a lot of boys in the military. I am building a cue for a buddy - with 2 purple hearts in the butt to replicate his two US of A military decoration medals - Purple Heart. And thank you.

Sounds like a cool cue.

I got deployed to fight forest fires in Montana for a month back in 1994 (I was in the 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood at the time) and had a fun time up there - the people were nice, the scenery was amazing and overall it was a good experience.

Hi Jack: "iwilleatyou" is referring to an unfortunate incident that happened in January 2007. Not sure he was around here long enough to meet Jon and the rest of us military folks that play out of Q-Masters. Barry surely treats the military fine - as he should - since we (active & retired) are probably the majority of the population here. Tuesdays are the day for the military at Q-Master - it's FREE pool from 12 noon until 12 midnight for all active duty and retired members. Guess what my practice day is?

Jon Sv---- is a great guy. Had the pleasure of playing on the same BCA team and we won the upcoming trip to Vegas in May. Jon just got out of the Navy a week or two ago and is headed back to your neck of the woods. His Dad was in town and I believe they were moving everything this weekend.

If possible, would love to see pictures of the "Purple Heart" cue when it's done.

P.S. Jon is a member on AZ: "joninnorfolk"

Well, I have been stationed in Norfolk for 13 years now and got discharged last week. I have played at Q-masters for the last few years and I believe the OP's experience to be an isolated incident and definitely not the norm. I have spent many, many hours in that building and it is the ONLY thing I will miss about this area. I will miss many friends and, guess what, most of them are from the pool hall.
Furthermore, Rod (hotrod) and Dave (emptypockets), I have enjoyed playing with and being teammates with both of you. Have a good one. Jon

Not so fast here buddy. We still have the matter of getting straight on that break cue before you leave. Ha-Ha. John it was our pleasure getting to know you and have you helping us out by being not only a good sport and team member but a person of fine caliber. I myself and all the members of the "Players" pool team wish you nothing but the very best in your future endeavors. Take care good buddy

Yes, I will post some pictures. Actually, Jon will probably see it (its not his cue) before I get pictures. Its a pretty simple abstract design. BEM forearm and butt with only two inlays in the butt with the Purple Heart design. Definite one of a kind. And if you are out this way visiting with Jon (he isn't too far from Yellowstone) stop by the shop.

Jack...Jon gets out in Feb., and is moving back to MT. I talked to him in August, and he told me he is looking at Livingston, just over the hill from where I used to live, in Bozeman. I worked with Jon at Q-Masters, a couple of years ago (in the back room, of course!). Great guy!

Barry asked us to post the following message as part of this thread...

After reading the several pages that were posted recently about who is allowed to play my tournament and who is not allowed I wanted to clear up any confusion. It is true that we are, rightfully so concerned about who has the privilege to be part of that section of the 21,000 SF building. There are 40 other tables outside of the tournament room all covered with 860 Simonis cloth with tables that are just as nice. Everyday I go to work with one goal in mind and that is to make my business better. I believe that Q-Master Billiards has never been in better condition. One of the most important aspects of having a great room and having the ability to stay in business for 37 years is the fact that I provide the very best playing conditions for everyone. I especially look after my very loyal regulars and been since day one. There are so many that are part of the walls and have supported me for a very long time.
Until we get to know more about any new customers it is only fitting to protect and appreciate those who have earned their way into the tournament room. Whether they are C players or A+++ makes no difference. "They have paid their dues" to play in the tournament room. There is a sign above the entrance of the tournament that has been there for a very long time, that reads," This special room, is just that "very special". We only allow our very regular customers the privilege of playing in this room. Which they have earned. We have to know you. The Management team assures them they will provide tables, playing league, and tournament day and night. It takes time to be able to play in this part of Q-Masters. Please understand". This sign explains everything. Action players should appreciate the fact that we must know you before playing the tournament room. I have made a lot of wonderful changes with my staff, and they are doing a wonderful job, much better than some past employees.
As far as my Wednesday night tournament it is for locals only and it is a handicapped event from C to A+++ players. Any new residents or those who are military must be rated prior to the tournament. Unfortunately, someone who used to run the tournament dropped the ball. I have a better director who will do the right things, such as checking I.D.'s, arranging ample time prior to the tournament in order to rate any new players. It is not for players passing through town trying to pick up first place money. It is for locals who support Q-Masters or players who are new to town. I am truly sorry all of this happened and looking forward to moving ahead now that it is corrected.
I was sorry to hear that someone got pissed and I am sure that the situation could have been handled better and with the new management I have employed it will be, come in and see for yourself. We have great specials such as Military Tuesday, where the military plays for free from noon- midnight as well as a Sunday Special which allows Southside Police, State police, firefighters, and Sheriff Deputies to play for free from noon-midnight.
I have been a promoter for the game that I fell in love with in 1965 while watching me dear friend Wimpy Lassiter, when I was 19 years old. The 34th annual U.S. Open is this October.
