Dragon Women's Event Draws Ire

are there any other women's professional events this year? sounds like charlie's tournament is a world championship,,,,well, at least a US one anyway.

These things aren't as upsetting to the women players as they would be to the men players. (Not all men, but many.)

The women have always been quick to see the big picture and to understand the importance of making certain sacrifices.

This is the right decision. There's no doubt in my mind that the women players will agree as well.

That is so sexist. :)

Well, I can see how someone may see my comment that way, but those of us who have been around this game for a long time and know it's history will understand exactly what I mean.

Don't be so concerned about the women. They can handle themselves and they'll be fine.

Didn't he rename the thing after all the mess it started with the original name so now it's just an International tournament not a "World" one?

The only people I see getting screwed are the women players. They either play and forfeit their points, or don't play and forfeit a possible pay day. In this case, they are getting screwed by both the WPA and DP. (Funny, because in porn DP means double penetration.)

sad part is, I'd rather watch the women play on good back and forth matches than the men run 6 packs. After the first 2 B&Rs, they all look the same.

Issue is that we can watch those back and forth games in any league night in the world. The main draw of womens pool is that they look pretty and elegant and look good in ads. The ability to play is secondary in most of them outside of local tournaments.

So what is the current status of women's pool in your fantasy world?

Isn't the WPA itself run out of someone's basement?

My thoughts exactly.

Charlie posted this statement on his Facebook before all this got out of Control.

"Never seen an industry like pool where you meet so called "big" entities that want to dictate things & get credit for doing absolutely zero work in return. Pool, Always amazes. Lol"

I guess these "reach arounds" are becoming harder to pull off because the players are asking questions. Accountability is staring this industry down and I hope the act of being accountable succeeds for the future of this sport.

Yes, the WPA had an issue as of 10/28 here (Post #24):
http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=382156

Then as of 11/4 the WPA approved the name change (Post#57):
"I am able to inform you that I have received confirmation from Dragon Promotions that they have changed the name of their event to “Women’s International Pool Championship” and in doing so, the WPA no longer has any concern about this event being misconstrued as the world championship."

Now a couple of week's later somehow Dragon's sliminess surprises them and now have a problem with the event :boring2:

the fact that this announcement doesn't come as a surprise should be a huge beacon as to what is wrong with pool.

Better yet, it's a beacon where the ''powers that be,'' finally realized this type of behavior only Hurts the sport....they will no longer tolerate such actions or behavior. This is good for the game and the players.:grinning-moose:

Yeah-a bunch of stuff must have gone down in the last few days. They came down VERY hard. I imagine there will be no World Straight Pool anymore either.

It's about time the WPA & BCA woke up to what CW & Dragon has been doing for years. All both orgs had to do was read AZB, we have been calling him (CW) out on here for years. Better late than never...I guess. Johnnyt

Would be a heckuva a turnaround that's for sure.

Yeah, but with the 14.1 the WPA has had no interest in staging any "world" events so they probably wouldn't step in, unless they have finally had enough of Dragon. With 14.1 the WPA wouldn't find any one in the mid east or Asia to cough up the money as there is no interest in the game.

I totally support the WPA in this case. Dragon could have still had their tournament and called it and promoted it in a way that didn't try to tread on the fact that it's a "world" or "international" championship. It still could have been a good tournament. They chose to be slimy and sneaky about it and got burned.

I got a hundred that says they step in if he tries to have another one this summer.

No one has mentioned the part of this that bothers me the most. The WPBA REQUIRES a minimum of $25,000 in added money for their own Classic Tour events. Why on earth would they "sanction" an event that lessens the worth of their own players? Should they not have at least demanded that their own minimums be met? This just not meet the smell test. I sense the odor of skulduggery and private payments.

And for those crying that the women need this event. Really? The women need an event held in one of the world's most expensive cities for food and lodging? An event that guarantees the vast majority of the field loses money? If they were stupid enough to go for this the rapid decline of the WPBA is easily explained. They ain't got any brains! The women players are great but their leadership has faltered badly the last ten years or so. They have made every mistake possible to make.

I would like to see the BCA step up and form a players organization for both the men and the women. They have no leadership now and obviously need it. With this move possibly signaling a renewed interest in pro pool by the BCA perhaps some further progress is in order? I hope so.
