Dress Code for Gold Crown Billiards, Erie, PA

I salute you !!!

It looks like you run a first class establishment. Your hourly rates are fair and the room is comfortable and well maintained. Blues and pool are a great combo.

Sounds LIke A Great Place to Play Pool and Socialize

I am 60 yrs. old and wear a Blue Grass Cues ball cap most of the time cause the hair is mostly gone. When I shoot pool I turn it backwards, but if I had a nice place to play, I'd gladly learn to play without it.

I quit going to the pool room nearest me because I don't want to be around illegal drug activity, where I have to worry about being shot or stabbed, and I'm not comfortable hearing loud obscenities shouted constantly across the room. The tables there are nice, and its only a 15 minute drive from my house, but I chose not to play there for the above reasons.

The same with a dress code. If I didn't like the dress code, I wouldn't play there. I would play some place where I felt comfortable. What is so hard about that? There seems to be a lot of places like the one I described above to play pool, and only a few like the Gold Crown. I'd rather play at the Gold Crown any day.

Bravo

Paul

I have never been to your room but hope to visit it one day next year. I admire you for standing up for what you believe in and I agree with your feelings about the dress code and the way people present themselves. I am one who is just as comfortable in a suit as I am in my biker gear (go figure).

Anyhow I wish you continued succes and although everyone is entitled to their own opinion I would disregard what the naysayers have to say.

Keep up the good work.

Kevin

And politicians wear suits, go figure.

LOL. What's the old saying? Never judge a book by its cover. I understand what Paul is trying to do and if his room is successful then it's a hard point to argue. But, what someone wears does not define them. Don't be prejudiced based on what someone is wearing. I know many successful people (lawyers, judges, doctors, teachers, etc.) that are adamant bikers on the weekends that include wearing the leather attire.

Maybe Paul has a good point. Maybe room owners would stay in business if they kept rules like he does in place.
If there was a room near me that was using foul language frequently and loud music, You might talk to the owner first before quitting the room.

If I ever decide to ride my chopper to Erie, I'd better pack my Tuxedo and dress shoes, so I can play pool!

I'm being a little bit of a smartaszz, so sorry.
If you tables are clean (and I bet they are) I am sure that I would like your pool room. You clearly take pride in it, and it is most likely nicer than where I play.

Good luck keeping the proletarians out, and have a Merry Christmas.

Bill

The Sign is ridiculous

Replace with

"Neat and Tidy dress required at all times"

and

"Owners reserves the right to refuse entry"

When a man walks with his chest puffed out, all leathered-out with a muscle shirt, bandanna, and black boots on, I get his message. He does not have to say a thing.

Does it mean John Schmidt just rode up from Wheeling lookin' for some action ?

awful lotta weekend warriors on motorcycles these days , most are the friendliest guys you'd wanna meet ~ the demographic is 45+ , divorced , stable job , DISPOSABLE INCOME (Dem softails ain't CHEEP toys . . . )

And some wear chaps without jeans underneath.
Oooops, that might be another bar.

Paul,

Several years ago, our room hosted a Joss 9 Ball Tour stop. The same Saturday as the 9 ball began, our room manager invited a Boy Scout Troop to have their Winter party in the pool room. There is plenty of space and more than enough pool tables to accomodate both groups.

Before the scouting event began, I suggested to the manager he disconnect the jukebox. Unlike your sanitized unit, theirs had lots and lots of x rated "rap". Sure enough, someone thinking they were funny put a couple of dollars in and played uncensored crap, oops rap. That was over four years ago. The scouts have never been back. Neither have the local school groups. Word must have travelled.

So, how is it again you become a successful pool room today?

At this very moment, 10:45 PM Dec. 23, there are between 500 and 600 hundred patrons in my place. All are dressed appropriately. There is no vulgar language. Everyone knows the rules. I get no argument. The average age looks to be between 35 and 40. I do not need a door-man. I like my customers and I like coming to work.

I'm 64 years old and wouldn't be caught dead dressing in most of the items listed on your sign, but I've got to say that list is absolutely ridiculous. Why don't you just ask everyone to wear tuxedos... It isn't 1950 anymore.

QFT. 12chars.

Sounds like you have a business model that is working well. If others would follow suit perhaps the public perception of pool could be improved.

At least the women can wear tank tops.....

What does wearing a hat backwards have to do with anything. I remember when they used to say wearing certain things or wearing them a certain way was gang related in school, never thought much of it. How many people do you see wear a hat forwards and try to play pool? I for one think it gets in the way while shooting. What if you have long hair and wear a hat for that reason. I know a guy who is 70 years old and wears his hat backwards all the time while playing, that dress code rule is obserb imo.

Nice, how may square feet is your room.

Crazy huh? And can you imagine, once upon a time "gentlemen" wouldn't DREAM of even wearing a hat indoors at all, let alone hanging off the side of your head like some punk ass wise guy. Go figure.

Keep in mind the degradation of society doesn't happen one morning after a good night's sleep that every one wakes up to and is shocked at. It's one grain of sand at a time. One little thing at a time. Little by little, hardly noticed, no one thing is a big deal.

Until one day, you wake up and find things like cops being sued for stopping a group of wise ass kids walking around after dark. They weren't doing anything, the cop harassed them.

Only now they walk in gangs and good people CAN'T take a walk after dark even around their own blocks.

In shopping malls mothers and children have to yield their paths to groups of scum who don't have enough decency to move and let them pass. And when they turn and look at the scum as they continue walking oblivious to any inkling of manners, all the mothers and children see is their underwear as their pants hang off their asses. Cops dare not intervene anymore because they would be infringing on the scums rights.

It goes on and on. The noise they call music gets louder and louder, filthier and filthier, no one dares intervene because it infringes on their rights. So no one makes a move to stop it. Next they hang out in gangs playing their war music and working themselves up enough to actually do harm to something or someone.

It's the tiny grains of sand that slowly erodes the values of our society.

Respect is taught it is not instinctual. But, as generations pass, and these sands continue to slowly erode, family values degenerate or are not passed on at all.

Hell, a good portion of the time this same erosion of society's value system has allowed families themselves to dissolve.

Years ago divorce was practically unheard of. Let me say that again, years ago divorce was practically unheard of. Today, if your spouse farts the wrong way divorce papers are being drawn up and the children grow without the benefit of a nuclear family.

The children now are taught by example that divorce is normal. After all their parents did it, and their grandparents did it, half the other kids in their school class don't have a mother and father, so it must be the norm.

People become so removed from what is respectful that they have lost the capacity to understand it, let alone teach it to their kids.

You see, the hat ain't SH#T in and of themselves. The hat ain't SH#T! They are but one grain of sand.

Since respect is not an instinctual value, those who have not been taught it before can't for the life of them understand the problem and certainly won't be able to pass it on to their kids.

Maybe in another 50 years, unchecked, unchallenged, uncalled, underwear won't be required and then our kids can watch em walking around with their pants hanging off their asses and we'll have to see their bare butts to boot.

The hat ain't sh#t.

Three,

One of the best posts I've read in a long, long time! Food for thought in an increasingly vulgar society. This is a thread about choice. If some don't like Paul's rules of dress and conduct, they should avoid visiting his place of business. I for one applaud his stance. And your commentary. Bet the nay say'ers don't dress or talk like that Sunday morning (or whatever your day of "worship" is!

Lyn

Kudos to you.... I like going to places like that.

I wish I could answer the question of why people like to "dress down"...

To each his own...
