Drivermaker Holiday Invitational - post scores here

Here are my scores, and as you will see, they are painfully honest

After going through the scores I have noticed that I am stubborn LOL. There are times that I would risk not scoring any points in a rack (and sometimes didnt) just to keep from losing a point for having to move the cueball after the break.

Woody...I take my hat off and applaud you for completing this and being brutally honest, evidenced by some of the 1's and 3's. Good job.

I think you've hit on one of the keys, which I've also found and that's knowing when to gamble the entire rack from the break and knowing when to take the 1 point deduction for a better shot to be able to run the rack and max out. It's just like playing an intense 14.1 match...sometimes you just gotta suck it up and take a foul for a point deduction rather that chance allowing your opponent to blow you away from a mistake on your part.

Many times on the break in this game you'll have only one squeaker of a shot that you might not only miss, but if you do make it, the natural roll will just get you in a lot of trouble or totally out of position to make anything else. Being able to read that right from the start is the difference between getting 1 or 19.
A few of those racks here and there can make a real difference.

Willee...normally the best advice you can give someone is "Don't quit your day job"!! In your case, if you keep playing like this, DUMP YOUR WIFE AND QUIT YOUR DAY JOB!! You're really kicking ass! BTW...don't worry about it...one day you'll understand and thank me profusely about the advice on dumping the wife. :D :p

who's playing 100 racks

I'm just curious as to who here is actually playing the full 100 racks? I would love to participate but there's no point if there's only two or three people doing it.

Maybe we could make a formal list so we know who all plans on completing the 100 racks, just a suggestion.

I intend to finish the 100 before Christmas. I'm at 45 now. Will post when I do the next 5. Dennis

Tempting advice

D'maker,
Yes, it certainly sounds glamourous - a life of living on a shoestring, hanging out hours on end in smoky pool halls, associating only with the best class of known felons and degenerate pool gamblers. The only reason I'm not taking your advice (besides my policy of ignoring EVERYTHING I hear on the internet) is that ALL of the good players I know just KICK MY ASS (there are a LOT of good players in INDY). Maybe after I practice 2 or 3 hours a day for 3 or 4 hundred more years I'll be ready.

I better get my ass in gear if I'm gonna complete 100 racks by christmas. I think Mike should leave the thread up a little longer than that....just in case of course LOL!

No offense Rag, but you cannot track something like this on a Word doc, you need the power of Excel! ;) I developed a spreadsheet that will calculate your session totals with averages, a running total of all sessions played with averages, and an aggregate score for all sessions played. Just enter the total number of balls made from 1-10, and the total made from 11-15, and the formulas will do the rest. Unfortunately, I discovered I cannot upload an Excel file to this post after I completed the spreadsheet, so if anyone is interested in the file shoot me a PM. Yes...I was a bit bored this evening!

If you're going to make a spreadsheet and include the formulas, why not just make it where you put in the total number of balls made and have an IF statement to calculate the totals?!

Example: If A1 > 10 A2=10+(A1-10*2) else A2=A1 (not sure the syntax is exactly correct but it should be something like that.)

Just an update, it looks like 2 or 3 of the professionals will contribute their scores before Christmas. Also please measure your pockets if possible (I just played a friendly match on a GCIII with pockets the size of small swimming pools - it makes a huge difference when compared to my tight pocketed home table).

I was curious about relating your score in this game to the typical A-D skill levels and was wondering if the following would be accurate:

D: 301-600 - Intermediate Player
C: 601-900 - Advanced Player
B: 901-1200- Developing Pro
A: 1201-1600 - Semi-Pro
1601-1800 - Pro
1801-2000 - Touring Pro

I won't post my scores. My table is a two year old Brunswick. There 7 footers have the same pocket size as there 9 footers so it is not like I'm playing on a bar box with Lake Superior size holes, but it is a 7 footer and I don't think it would be a good comparison. I'll eventually have to go to the pool hall and give it a try to see how I do there.

This is a great exercise and a good contribution to the forum Drivermaker! Thank you.

Captain,
Avast, there are other players posting scores from 7 footers. You need to step up to the plate and post some scores. Remember, we all will assume the worst about any non-professional player that doesn't post their scores. :) :) :) :)

I haven't posted in this because I haven't had the time nor will I for at least a month or two at best. To me it gets a little boring playing this stuff, but that's me. Over a year ago I played a lot of Fargo to sharpen up game skills and did well. I did play this though only for two sessions. The two were a 182 and a 188. I figure to be between the 1600 to 1800 range if I'm playing a moderate amount. Well that is if I can still see. LOL So youse guys rate me as you will, heck put me at a 1000 if you like and give me weight. ha ha ha

Reminds me of the old saying “ better to be thought a fool than open one's mouth and remove all doubt” …Oh well here I go singing like a canary.

I don’t have the rack scores for the first two

9 foot Brunswick

#1) 123
#2) 112
#3) 102 20,20,5,20,3,2,1,7,14,10
#4) 103 19,5,12,10,7,12,2,12,9,16
#5) 126 20,16,10,20,12,5,20,18,1,4
#6) 101 20,20,10,3,10,3,14,10,10,1
#7) 95 6,5,16,11,7,20,8,7,10,5
#8) 104 4,16,16,2,10,20,0,20,12,4
#9) 88 3,18,8,10,12,4,20,7,4,2 (new years day)
#10) 87 14,2,7,20,3,14,6,10,8,3 (new years day)

Total 1041 which falls in the “901 – 1,200 Developing Pro” category

Makes me think of a guy I once knew. At the time he was in his first year of junior college but would tell everybody he was working on his PhD. Using that philosophy as a reference, I guess I can accept the Developing Pro category.

Breakup,
Great quote, so thanks for participating.

Rod,
Remember there is a prize for the winner from Drivermaker.

First prize = $50,000 cash, 2005 Corvette convertible, and all-expense paid trip to Bermuda.
Would you believe $10,000, a Volkswagen beetle, and bus fare to Atlanta?? Would you believe a free postage stamp, a Hot wheels Corvette, and directions to the bus station??

It looks like Keith McCready, Lisa Marr, and Jennifer Barretta are intending to compete (and maybe Sarah Rousey). Good luck to all, and don't be shy about posting - its just for fun.

The hot wheels Corvette stays with me...that's my little car-car.

I understand Willee might be thinking of donating a prize himself...his Predator shaft since he's thinking about upgrading to a "real" one. :D (you have no immunity yet....)

Wow that's great some of the pros might participate and also that Jenn has already been playing this game for a while. This is the first real opportunity to gauge where my game is at comparted to a pro, anyways I've been slacking the last couple days but will update my score later.

Sniper,
While I definitely think the game is a fair assessment of skill (at least until I flub up a few sessions), it may not be as good a tool to differentiate amateur from pro as Hopkin's other game ("bowlliards"). In bowlliards, there is a 10 point bonus for completing the rack, thus conferring a huge penalty on any schmuck that can't finish the runout (like me). My score in that game is very much lower than the pro I compete with, my score in this Q-skill challenge is fairly close to the pro (not because I am better, but because the scoring is just different).

D'maker,
Since it doesn't look likely that I'm going to get immunity, I will just say if the winner wants it, they will have to pry the Predator shaft from my cold, lifeless fingers (and don't respond that this is a good idea). It at least has sentimental value as the first cue I ever played well with (well, at least by my standards), and I'm not parting with it. I might, however, kick in a "magic 8-ball" for the winner's pool room. It drives one of my professional opponents crazy when I insist on consulting the 8-ball when I am waffling about a choice of shots or position routes. I might have to part with it, if for nothing else than to prevent serious personal injury.

Willee...does Hopkins give a rating system that goes along with bowlliards?

BTW...I might have posted this Q-Skill game and got initial interest, but you're doing a damn good job of keeping it up, getting more involved, and prodding those that need a little poke. Good work......

Hey Dm

I'll be posting some scores tonight. My friend and I are going to put some work in a little later if it's not too damn cold. I'm going to check the rules again so I don't mess up on our scores. I'm very interested in seeing what kind of numbers I can put up here. Talk to ya soon, peace, John.
