Earl/Shane score

Earl has NOT earned the right to act any way he wants to. In any other major sport, Earl would be fined and banned for his unsportsmanlike conduct. It's high time that the referees and tournament organizers in pool raise the bar and show zero tolerance for this kind of misconduct.

This is a gambling match. The only person who has any sort of power (or just cause) to determine tolerance is Shane.

You notice that Jay Helfert has pointed out that in the tourney's that he administers, Earl doesn't get away with this stuff.

If Shane tolerates it, its his business. If Justin tolerates the abuse of the equipment, that's his business. (I somehow doubt that will be an issue again, though I'm just guessing here.) This is a private match, streamed for all to see. It is not a tournament, where the rules have to apply to many individuals. There are only two people in this match that have to accept anything, Shane and Earl. It's their party.

I am not condoning poor behavior. I think most of us like Earl on "slight tilt", not on "overdrive tilt". Of course, that's probably not an easy switch to flip, for Earl.

Ask any pro player one on one for an unbiased opinion of how earl acts..... Let him shark you out of a few matches at major tournaments and see how long you earl fans stay on his team. Its all fun until the rabbit has the gun.

Shane 62
Earl 58

Earl ran two racks in like 40 seconds...then got kicked in on the break...
...Shane returned the favor

Hypothetical question for you: Is it ok to cheat in a gambling match?

Sharking could be considered a form of cheating, especially if the intent is to distract your opponent, possibly causing them to miss their shot.

We could go down that road. I'd probably agree with you. In general.

Again, if it doesn't bother Shane enough to do something about it, it doesn't matter what we all think. Again, Many Tournament Directors (according to Jay) already stop Earl from doing that.

Hypothetical right back at you: Is it OK to hide your true speed while setting up a game? Isn't that a form of cheating, too? It seems to be as much in the culture of "real pool" as sharking. Whether you or I like it or not.

Then guess what....somebody should start paying the pro's the kind of salaries that other professionals get paid....so they HAVE some guaranteed INCOME to fine....don't you think?...otherwise, turn your computer OFF!

I've gambled for years, for as much as $16,000 on a single game of 14-1 and let me tell you something, if you're so dumb as to let your opponent control YOUR game through sharking...then you just paid for lessons to learn how to keep your mouth shut, and stay focused on YOUR turn at the table...there ARE no rules in this sport that gives you as a PLAYER to have TOTAL control over your opponent while you're at the table, or the spectators for that matter. When you get better as a player...you learn to FADE the other player, or at least fight fire with fire....SHOOT THE BALLS IN BETTER, STAY FOCUSED and you'll win more often....I guarantee it!!!! I use to play Harry Plattis all the time and let me tell you something, if you wanted the CHEESE...you learned to fade the HAWK!!!!!!!

When I was playing all the time, I really didn't care what the other player did to try and distract me so he could win....I focused on my game when I was at the table, but now....take the money off the light before we were done playing, THAT was a different story, that would get your ass kicked for sure. You could beat me on the table, that was OK, but leaving with MY money without beating me....LMFAO., that's the ONLY form of cheating I'd consider wrong in pool!!!

In another thread, sjm mentioned that Mark Griffen said he was going to talk to Earl about this sharking. Does anyone know what came out of it? How's Earl behaving today compared to day 1 or 2?

There is a difference between tournament and gambling. In a tournament setting you are trying portray the sport in a positive image for the fans. It sounds like you condone earls antics. I must say if i play him in a tournament match again i will put an end to it before it starts. As far gambling goes if Earl had done the same thing in a gambling match with me i would have blasted him from the start and he would of been shitting himself the rest of the match. The same goes for you. There is also difference between playing earl and a guy who plays bad like Harry.

Thanks for the updates -azers
