Earl Strickland?

I just read this in a thread about the Gem City Tournament/Cue & Case Show.
On a different note. The Tournament Disciplinary Committee has ruled that the conduct of Earl Strickland during tournament play was severely unsportsmanlike. He has been suspended indefinitely from any and all Gem City Tournaments and Events. The GCC Tournament Supervisors and The Marietta Billiard Club wish to express an apology to the players and the fans for his conduct.

Is this the end for Earl? I don't blame the Gem City Tournament committee and I hate to hear this happening to one of the sports most talented players. I wish him the best......

The end? Heck, he's hasn't even hit full stride yet.

Seriously though, it is unfortunate. I still hadn't heard the circumstances behind his self termination at Gem City. But, it's just one tournament. So, life goes on for Earl.

Thanks for the heads-up about this. I noticed a thread about Earl walking out of a match, and suppose this was the same tournament?

Some more information please?

Yes, there was a thread his walking out, but if someone posted why he did so, I didn't see it.

Did a spectator say "Yo, Earl, your Mom wears combat boots?"

I'm his biggest fan. I wish Earl would get his head on straight - but like I said in other threads, I "understand" and I don't fault him for it.

EARRRRRRRRRRRRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cry Cry Baby

Earl walked when he wasn't playing well and losing. He threw his little tizzy fit and left.

I don't know what (only read it) he did but is being Earl Strickland the reason he's barred?

Usually a player has to do something like unprovoked fighting to get barred.

I think the reason sponsors dropped him and people turning on him has more to do with not winning rather than his conduct. I've never seen one of his "tirades" but it sounds like common knowledge.

A guy who said he was playing on the next table explained that Earl's opponent took a couple of bathroom breaks in the middle of the match. Evidently that played a role in Earl walking out.

Earl isn't just any player. A lot of people go to watch him with the expectation that he will be actually playing, not walking out.
And I don't remember exactly how much, but somebody did dig pretty deep into their wallet to buy him in the calcutta. I'm sure they would have preferred to see him in there fighting rather than walking.

I think the tournamanet director should have been proactive and not reactive. If a code of conduct was in place, then whatever Earl did probably would have been avoided. I wonder if they even talked to Earl or did they just ban him for spite. I just saw Earl play tonight in Goldsboro and he was very much in control.

True, and unfortunately people know they can egg Earl on and get this type of behavior from him. He should take yoga lessons or something.

I doubt Davenport or Archer, who are more than just acquaintances to Earl, would simply ban him on a whim. There shouldn't have to be anything like a "Code of Conduct". This is supposed to be a gentleman's game and tournament directors shouldn't have to hold Earl's hand the entire time to get him to behave. Like I said in another thread, verbal outbursts can be tolerated, but wiping the table clean, breaking sticks in a tantrum, etc. etc. is simply too much.

Love or Hate him, He's still a HOF member

And a World Champion without many peers.
No one can even come close to understanding what goes on in Earl's head...

Here is a story copied from many years ago on this forum.

Willie Mosconi, Johnny Archer and Earl Strickland are standing at the throne of heaven. God looks at them and says, "Before granting you a place at my side, I must ask you what you believe.

God looks at Willie and asks: "what do you believe?"
Willie thinks long and hard, looks God in the eye, and says, "I believe in hard work, and in staying true to family and friends. I believe in giving. I was lucky, but I always tried to do right by my fans.

God can't help but see the essential goodness of Mosconi, and offers him a seat on his left.

Then God turns to Archer and says, "What do you believe?"
Johnny says, "Win or lose, I believe passion, discipline, courage and honor are the fundamentals of life. Like Willie, I believe in hard work. I've been lucky too, but I've always tried to be a true sportsman, both on and off the table."

God is greatly moved by Johnny's modest southern eloquence and offers him a seat at his right and a piece of pie.

Finally, God turns to Strickland : "And you, Earl, what do you believe?"

Earl replies, "I believe you're in my seat."
