I hate to say this but Earl having a rough time .
I heard Kim was less than pleased with his antic's .
During tournament play he had sweep the balls off the table after making bad shots and couple of times .
Some time around 7:30 pm he broke his cue down and left in the middle of a match last night .
I like Earl and I hope he gets his head together SOON !!
 
This is exactly why I don't like Earl. I'm not buying the whole bi-polar excuse. He's an ass plain and simple. I think he loves the attention he gets by acting like a crybaby.

There are a lot of better role models than Earl. Here are just a few: Allison, Efren, Shane, Johnny...Okay Earl lovers, let the bashing begin!
 
Earl was not trying to be any body's roll model .
In 2 days and nights I never seen him smile or joke around with anybody .He pretty much stayed to himself practicing on the tables .
Earl is pretty much the Tiger Woods of pool and it saddens me to see him go to the way side like this .

I was watching some old footage a few weeks ago of him playing Mizz at the Tahoe classic back in 84 and the crowd was whooping and yelling like it was a boxing match.
He beat the living bejesus out of mizz and was at the top of his game !
I hope he can find the mojo he had back then soon !!
I think it will be a long while before he gets to play at Johnny and Kim's place again .....:frown:

No bashing from me Jason. It is easy to understand why you and others "don't like Earl". I like him for a number of reasons and hope to meet the man sometime. I can't say that I agree with the way he acts now and then but I don't even like the way I act now and then;).

Unfortunately, Earl's antics (I believe) have always been a way to get the edge on his opponents. I think he should have been disciplined years ago, but the tournament directors wanted him too much as a drawing card.
 
Well I do like Earl for his game but one thing I think we are all forgetting is that we are all Human , these things happen to us well maybe not all of us but for a few .

I NEVER had a problem with Earl, even last year in Phoenix. He knows he can't get away with that stuff when I'm working an event. I dealt with him many times in the 80's and 90's when he was still at the peak of his game. I respect Earl and his abilities, but there is a place I draw the line as a TD, and Earl knows that. Let's just say we respect each other.

If he is bi polar and doesn't take his medication then he should be disciplined just like anyone else would be. Since this seems to be an ongoing problem with him I'm sure he is one of the many who won't take their meds.

Jay, you will always get the players respect b/c you respect them and run a great tournament! Hope all is well w/ you!
 
Earl is one of the greatest players ever. His behavior is questionable at times, and some times his kindness and thoughtfulness will surprise even the staunchest of his critics.

Sometimes Earl is like a box of chocolates, but aren't we all at times? He's a very emotional person, a very emotional player - and he puts asses in the seats and gets people to tune in to watch pool. More Earl (good or bad) is always good for the game of pool.
 
Don't know if Earl is on medication, but, if its true, sometimes the cure is the problem. The meds can be nasty and people just get tired of living in lala land
so they skip their daily dose to try and have a normal day. The end result is that they can screw up. I've always liked Earl and believe he has more redeeming qualities than not.

That is cool that you Jay cn control him, but he shold act the same way in all venues. If Early was on the PGA Tour, he would be an Unemployable Pro Golfer unless he complied with PGA RULES at all times.

Wonder if it would be practical to have something similar to the PGA School for Pool where when you want to play at Pro Type Events, you had to have a Pro Card that was earned in a PAG Type School.
 
I like Earl, but if something don't change this man will end up dead broke and lonely without anyone to call a freind or family if he don't change his way of doing things. The guy has a God given talent and he is just wasting it, if he ever gets his head right he would still be a threat playing anybody, anyone that plays as good as Earl does could still be running rack after rack well into their 80's if he lives that long.
 
While I think Earl does cross the line of good sportsmanship on occasion, I think much of it is because he takes his game so seriously, demands perfection from himself, and doesn't always get it. When that happens, he gets frustrated, and his emotions take over.

Talk to him when he isn't in competition, and he is a very nice guy.

Some people are very emotional, and Earl is one of them. His outbursts are his way of releasing the frustration when he isn't playing up to his personal standards.

It doesn't justify his actions, but it does make them in some ways more understandable.

Finally, an iota of sense. What Steve said, plus the fact that Earl is probably spoiled, and a little bratty. Many people can not stand failure after experiencing the success that Earl has experienced in the past.
Feeling it 'slip away' can be awfully hard on a person, kind of like when you feel yourself getting old.

I resent the bi-polar remarks. First off, you don't know for sure if he is bi-polar for sure, and to categarize him as such is wrong. Even if he is, why the big deal? I happen to be bi-polar, and classified, laughingly, as a manic depressive. Yes, I take meds daily, and lead a perfectly normal life.

If you haven't been there, done that, don't make assumptions you shouldn't ....
 
To me one of the most regrettable aspects of Earl's misbehavior is the international aspect, in that it reflects badly on Americans. It was embarrassing for me to watch the famous race to 120, as Efren hit his high gear Earl's behavior just deteriorated. I've always imagined that that race to 120 with $100k to the winner was set up by some incredibly rich pool fan(atic), who invited his int'l jet set friends. Earl ending up berating these same "beautiful people", I remember in particular when he told some woman, draped in diamonds, that he would pay her $500 not to fidget while he was shooting. His behavior was truly disgraceful, and embarassing to Americans everywhere. Having said that, I really don't have anything against him. At one point, and a long point at that, he was the best in the world, along with Efren.
 
I can deal with Earl's emotional "outbursts", it happens in other sports all of the time, as it should I think. A player is allowed to get frustrated with himself, it's just going to happen. I can even stomach it when he has words with other players. While I don't think it's the most gentlemanly thing that can happen, I also don't think that it's detrimental to the sport. What I can't deal with is his unsportsmanlike conduct. Sweeping the balls off of the table because he screwed up is childish and uncalled for. You don't see basketball players hurling basketballs into the crowd when they miss a free throw. That sort of action needs to get reigned in and concequences need to be brought against him. Just my .02 cents of course.
 
Earl was a great player, back in THE DAY,but now he's suffering from what everyone on this planet suffers from.AGE.Look at any elite athletes career numbers.You see them climb,reach a level of excellence,then their ability,mainly because of the aging factor,affects their performance.Some retire,some make adjustments to compensate,and some keep competing, with mixed results.Earl can still be great,at times,just not as often as he's used to.
