Easier

This would depend on what you are good at in the game of pool.

The game of nine ball is about always shooting a cut shot. You are always shooting at dificult shots in this game. Focus is so important in this game.

The game of eight ball is about total control, and never giving yourself a dificult shot. Never leaving your opponent an out. When you start to run out you must run out.

So, if your very good at making cuts, banks, kicks and jump shots then play nine ball.

If you never seem to have a hard shot, but when you do it jaws up in the hole, then play eightball. Sometimes jawing a ball in this game is the best shot you could make.

I think nine ball might be the only game in cue sports where you are on the same team until the last ball falls in. A guy can pocket 110 balls out of 121 and still lose. Very brutal game you must always stay focused until the last ball is in the hole.

Eightball is all about knowing when to win, and when to jaw a ball. One of the worst places you can be in eight ball is shooting at the eightball and no shot between the seven balls left on the table.

Like Mr. Neu said, it really depends on what you're good at. Some people who are good at 9 Ball are crap at 8 Ball because they're not used to making their own decisions about which ball they should go after next. In 9 Ball, you already know which ball you're trying to play position on next, so all you really have to decide is how you want to play that ball. Some people are good at 8 Ball are crap at 9 ball because they're not used to playing postion back and forth across the table. For the most part, you play 8 Ball in regions, so you work in one side of the table and then play position to take care of the balls on the other side of the table.

It also depends on what size table you play on. Some barbox players might say that 8 Ball is harder than 9 Ball, while people who play on a 9ft might say that 9 Ball is harder than 8 Ball.

Both games have some different elements. In 9 ball I find you need to move the cue ball around a lot more than 8 ball. In 8 ball you try to move the cue ball a little as possible to get out. Lots of stop shots in 8 ball. The end game of 8 ball is relative to 9 ball because you need to get out usually with a distinct pattern. More clusters in 8 ball. I find the patterns in 8 ball may be a bit more complex because of the many options with patterns, clusters and break outs. I cant exactly say what is easier. I appreciate both games equally.

Which is a easier game, 9 Ball or 8 Ball?

9 Ball is easier. Once you learn the basic patterns, all you are doing is repeating them over and over and over and over again. Comes down to getting a shot, and breaking the balls. Also safety play is very easy.

8 Ball is far more dynamic. You gotta pull all kinds of tools from your arsenal all the time and keep whitey on a string. The break is still big, but this game is more about control and creativity. Tough safety play aspect here, when needed, as you must protect against multiple possibilities for your opponent.

The better player wins more often in 8-Ball than in 9-Ball.

Edit: 9-Ball is simpler.

I love 8 for a challenge

ever heard other player(s) say this:"I only play 9 ball I dont play 8 ball because it's too easy''?Reason is because they have played a better 8 ball player and it was easier to LOSE at!!!!and most times luck shots won't win the game

8 Ball is easier in my opinion. If you get out of shape you have 6 other balls to potentially shoot at which is not the case in 9 ball where you have to shoot them in order and play on the bigger table instead of a barbox for 8 ball in most cases.

Maybe I've been around too long, but this was hotly debated, right before the IPT 8-ball tournaments started.

Long story short, top pros average run outs in 8 ball were almost identical with average 9 ball run outs.

Very very good response rep for you sir.

Well, I think 8 ball is easier and this is why. It is easier to run an 8-ball table with no CB control. I had weak players run a table and muck shape on the 8. They finish with a bank, kick etc. Really during the run they didn't get shape on any ball, just happen to fall on something. This type of play doesn't work in 9-ball. Those cut shots, posted above, are all shape. 9-ball requires better potting and shape. 8 ball is more ball selection and break outs. Most of the time the CB can move from one end to the other finishing on the 8 ball end, not all around the table going to the next ball like 9-ball.

The game is easier, however, the weaker player has a much harder time of winning. The quick win isn't there. For me to play a much weaker player in the two games you would see scores like 9-0 8-ball and maybe 9-2 in 9-ball.

My most B&Rs are in 8-ball... 12, with only 8 in 9-ball.

I have a lot more runouts in 8ball than I do in 9 ball. That tells me that 9 ball is harder for me. Another thing, you only have 8 balls to run out in 8 ball, but 9 in 9 ball. You have to shoot them in order in 9 ball, but have several choices (usually) in 8 ball. The only thing about 9 ball, there is not as many balls on the table, so you may get hooked more in 8 ball. Just my opinion.

The hooked thing is true, but I think only having 1 ball to get shape on makes it a wash.

It all depends on the table. 9 ball is easier on the bar table and 8 ball is harder, 8 ball is easier then 9 ball on the big table IMO.

There are a lot of factors in your answer. The table size and etc has a lot to do with it. To me, 8ball is harder on a Barbox, due to the limited space and if you don't play well position, you will have difficulty shooting at your shot due to there are more OB on the table that you are not suppose to hit.

As for 9-ball, barbox 9-ball is easy, but like I said, limited space can help because you can pay more attention to positioning rather than making the shot on a barbox. Shot making on a barbox is easy, it is all about positioning.

As for 8-ball on a big table, that is a lot easier, due to the space you have to manuever around with. On a tighter table, it could get a bit more challenging.

9-ball on a big table is not much harder than a barbox, but the way you control your power and ability to play position is key.

I don't know what I'm talking about lol

I hate 8 Ball, if you never play 8 ball it can be a rough game on any table. Same could be said for 9 ball. Short answer is whatever game you play more...the other one is harder!

8 ball should be a 2 inning match. No reason a very skilled 8ball player shouldnt run the rack. Im not very skilled at it but what frustrates me about the game is that you can run all your balls get to the 8 and have no shot. (hence why im not a skilled 8 ball player). Then your opponent elects to do this strategy - Shoot a ball, play safe, shoot another ball, play safe. It just grinds me to where I wanna shove my pool cue into my eyesocket.

To me they are just different games that require different strategies. But 8 ball is eaiser IMO in this regard. Play a bad safe in 9 ball there is a chance your opponent may not strike or pocket the object ball. Play a bad safe in 8 ball your opponet will have mulitple options on what shots(balls) they can shoot at.

I'm going with a mixture of Lenny's and Mikey's answers -

barbox 8ball is tougher than barbox 9ball - and 9ball on a 9 footer IS tougher than 8ball on a 9 footer.

That being said, someone who plays 8ball almost exclusively will have a tough time playing someone who plays 9ball almost exclusively and vice versa (assuming they are roughly the same in playing ability). I always get a chuckle out of 9ball on 9 footer only guys (that play well) struggling against seemingly lesser players on Diamond 7 footers playing 8ball.

(I'm sure it's obvious) I like barbox 8ball, and some of the 6 other balls to shoot at guys probably don't play a whole lot of 8ball on a box....missing shape on whichever ball you were trying to get on SUCKS, usually compounds on you, and requires a new PLAN (which in itself takes your focus of what you WERE doing, and messes with your head). What if the only other ball you have was supposed to be 2 shots down the road, and a break out ball - UH OH!!

I'll stop - I suck at both anyways...:p
