Efren Reyes fluke 9 ball against Appleton 2012 US Open

No, he meant, kick at the 4 and bank the 4 off the rail into the opposite pocket. Look at the video and see how he lines up from his nearest rail into the opposite pocket ... that was the intended path of the 4 ball. He hit it hard so that the cue ball would head uptown. The 9-ball falling was a fluke albeit a welcome one to many of us. And you are right, he usually doesn't hit the wrong side of a ball after a kick ... especially that close.

Ok, that could correspond with Efren's preshot actions. But still wondering about where he laid the stick on the table. He seems to point it at the pocket first, then pulls it back some to point at the bottom rail. I hope someone asks him. The Magician wouldn't lie.

I've always compared 9 ball to poker in a loose way. At least for the top pros, no one pro can win every tournament. There will always be luck involved. there's luck involved in the breaks, kick shots, and missed balls and that can really make the difference in a relatively tight match. However, the good player that can produce consistent good play will triumph in the end. To lose a game due to a lucky roll is tough, but a seasoned veteran like Darren probably understands that it is part of the game and he will get over with it soon.

aaaaaand shit like this is why there are a lot more 10-ball tournaments now than (luck)9-ball. Earl's rules from his TAR match with Shane on the 10-footer, in my opinion, should be the standard. No luck, no cheese. run every rack. But, this is 9-ball. When you get stuck, hit it hard and hope for the best.

Efren hit it hard for a reason. Look at the path of the cue-ball after the hit, and the shot that Darren had if the 9-ball hadn't fallen.

First of all i want to say daz is an amazing player and has definitely proved it all over the world. With that said imho efren did absolutely nothing wrong. Efren is a legend and after so many years showing his emotion after a hard fought battle (especially over the two time defending champion) was no different then how anyone else would act.
He fought hard and won. Why should his celebration be excepted differently whether he played perfect or was lucky? Luck or not I dont think you can find a us open champion who didnt get a few if not several rolls throughout the tourney. For those complaining about everything should be a call shot game.....I completely agree and that is why they have 10 ball. as much I respect daz and his game I dont know of any 10 ball tourney he has won. If I am wrong please correct me. If your playing 9 ball then you should be familiar with the rules without any complaints.

Can people please stop feeling sorry for Darren. Reyes is argueably the best player that ever lived and everyone feels like Darren should have won.... really? If anybody was going to do it, Efren would be the guy, he has habit of making some clutch kicks maybe it ain't all luck guys.

This.

Does anyone know how Efren got into that position on the 4 ball? Did he hook himself, or had Darren just played safe on him to leave him there?

HERE'S the last rack of the Efren Reyes and Darren Appleton's match. Enjoy!

btw, Efren shook Daz' hand 3 seconds after the 9 went in, so I don't know what the Dynamite was b!tching about...

Thanks for this.

Seeing the entire rack puts things in perspective, especially seeing the prior shot by Appleton. After a superb 2-rail kick safe by Efren, Appleton simply got lucky hiding the 4 behind the 9. So Efren answered Appleton's luck with some luck of his own.

wow that's slow play at the maximum level. I understand is hill hill, but Appleton took like 3 minutes on that 4

I also don't like very much Efren behaviour's when he flukes balls, I have never seen him apologize to his opponent.

I just rewatched the shot and i can say if the game required call pocket, Efren would call the 9 in the side pocket, no difference.

Really bro?? You honestly believe that Reyes would've called the 9 in the side or would he call it in the corner where he was going for?? Did you see the leave?? Did you see the shape on the 5 ball?? Yeah..... he definitely would've called the 9 in the side

Look people..... yes he is the magician but that doesn't mean he goes for or makes these fluke shots on purpose!!! I think its extermely funny that people think he's that fine tuned. Oi Vay!

Precisely. So if it is true that appleton was bad mouthing or saying things against Efren after the match, then he owes an apology, along with his fanboys who have been defending him. I am now glad Dennis beat him on the B side.

I have watched Efren play for long enough to know that he is the best kicker in the world. He kicks with a purpose every time. He got lucky this time that the nine fell in, but I am not surprised when he makes a kick shot and the result is positive time after time.

In my opinion the biggest difference between the quality of play between now and 20 years ago is the improvement in kicking ability. Players used to kick to get lucky or just make a hit...now they kick to play safe and do it almost every time. Why the change...Efren. It is because of Efren that players are better now than 20 year ago.

Correct, and you want to kick it a little wide to give it a chance, he hit it very well and almost made the shot sent the cue ball in the right direction for a chance of getting safe. This was his best option for getting safe, nice shot.

Wow, we'll stated

Yes efren is the best at kicking balls and maybe he was trying it. But that doesn't change the fact that the best players in the world shouldn't be playing a bs garbage game like Texas express 9 ball. I don't feel bad for Appleton..thems the breaks and no matter what you do luck is going to play a certain factor. But at the pro level they should be doing EVERYTHING they can to eliminate as much of the luck factor as possible.

Agreed. It is supposed to be a game of skill... not luck. If Efren were required to call the shot & had, there would be no question about it & his reputation would be even greater than it is.

Didn't archer win the us open one year by shitting in the nine? A lot of tournaments went to having to call the nine when making it out of turn after that.

For everyone that thinks it was a fluke, if Efren said that's what he was trying, would you believe him? I think it was a semi-fluke. I believe Efren saw the possibility of that shot if he missed the kick bank a little thin. After watching Efren play one pocket, I think he is capable of any exotic shot out there!
