Thanks for sharing this, my friend! As you know (and a preference we both share), I'm not a 9-ball aficionado/devotee, but this was some of the best 9-ball I've ever seen. Mika simply didn't have a chance. (Well, he did, in that first rack, when he hung the 1-5 combination, but he needed one of those cold-weather trucker seat-warmers for pretty much the rest of that set, except for a couple "get up and stretch / try to kick-at a nearly impossible safety / then sit right back down" that Efren left for him.)

I for one can't wait for Efren to recuperate and show us he's still "got it" (which I believe he does, even at the age of 55). Emphysema is a really terrible disease, but if it's caught early and with proper care, it fades over time and the lungs heal.

I agree when you see 9 ball played like this its great to watch,still is not like one pocket though. :grin: How is the weather in NY?

Yup, I'd have to say my favorite "Efren" is the one pocket master seen in the Accu-Stats DCC 2006 matches (e.g. against Alex P. [twice] and against Jason Miller in the finals).

As for the weather, it's overcast right now, about 55 degrees F., not bad considering the cold chill we had recently. Certainly in stark contrast to the weather you have over there in AZ, though. :) Can't wait for spring weather to finally show her face for more than the few days "sample" we sporadically got over the past couple of weeks.

That was a brutal lil drilling. Perfect illustration of why a race to 7 is just too short. I don't expect anyone to get a shot every game, but more than 1 reasonable shot per set would be nice. Although I think mika coulda locked efren down better on his 2nd safe near the foot of the table.
 
If anyone wants to see even *better* pool, look at Efren vs Bustamante from the 1999 WPC.

Bustamante is up 3-1 and breaks dry (race to 11). By the time he gets back to the table, EFREN IS ON THE HILL! Efren ran that rack, and ran an 8-PACK full of the best pool I've seen in my entire life. That totals 9 racks where Bustamante didn't even get to the table, except to have one dry break. Jay Helfert was commentating; he can attest to the level of play that Efren exhibited. And yes, this was the WPC year that Efren won. Absolutely phenomenal!

I have a copy, and will try to post some on YouTube if I ever get a free moment.

Agreed. At that level of play, a race to 7, winner breaks 9 ball is WAAAAAAY too short.

Youtubers will have to turn the volume way down to fully appreciate it without enduring of keen insights like "He'll have to pull this one back with extreme screw and loads of side to get position" or (in a tollbooth willy voice) "like a blind fisherman manning the net, he's riding this one on pure experience!"

That's what Reyes does best, he can always get away from trouble and can put someone in trouble and nobody in this world can duplicate.
 
When Efren is running out AND getting all the rolls, it's always gonna be ugly for his opponent.
 
is it me or does mika ALWAYS take the worst beatings at or near the finish line - and the funny part is that they're generally not his fault! everything just seems to go the other guys way (not to take anything away from anybody - it still takes great nerves and play to finish every time). Corey blanked him @ the US open...and efren manages to do it as well. all i have to say is ouch.

Yes! I've noticed that too. I've seen it happen to him not only in tournaments but in friendly matches as well (actually there are no friendly matches with Mika, he takes them all deadly seriously) I once saw him play a local amateur player in a game of straight pool. The player was decent but nowhere near Mika's speed. The player would run 40 or so and miss and only once did he leave a shot in the whole match! I forget the final score but Mika got trounced, he was so angry he wouldn't shake the player's hand....he just sat there for awhile perfectly still and brooding.

Classy! Maybe this is what encourages the pros to try their hardest to nail him with a bagel set :)
