A GREAT DAY
Silver Member
I'm a huge fan of Efren and after his great accomplishments at this weeks DCC I wanted to start a thread and hear about some Efren stories, sightings, meetings, you know, just real-life stories to enlighten all of us Efren fans.:)
IE:JoeyA story a few years back of sitting beside Efren on a flight after the DCC.And Roy's story couple of years ago of backing Efren in some tourny at the DCC.(sorry, cant remember exactly, but thats why of this thread).
Heres my tiny encounter with the Great Reyes...........
A few years ago my team won a trip to the BCA's,we checked in,grabbed our sticks and headed down to check out the tables. After some practice time we head to the casino area to grab a beer(our team loves to drink)LOL.
Standing around checking out the sights I happen to notice Efren playing some Roulette.I say to my team mates "thats Efren Reyes".To my astonishment they say "Who's that?".I felt like going upstairs, packing my bags and heading home.LMAO.
Well right there I knew I had to get his autograph or something BUT on what?.What better thing to get signed by the greatest player of all-time.........My CUE.So there I was running from work station to work station looking for someone who happened to have a Sharpy.Nothing!!!!
Then I ran to the little store they have at the Riv,they were out of Sharpies but I practically begged the counter lady to see if she had one somewhere.....SHE DID.
Ran back, grabbed my shaft out of my case and kindly asked Efren if he could sign my cue.Without hesitation,he did.A very humble guy. That made my whole trip that year special.
I had hoped Efren would do well this DCC,BUT again the guy amazes me.WOW,congrats again Efren, you are trully a "MAGICIAN".

A nice little Efren story for you

It was 3-4 years back at Derby City. I was standing just behind Efren at the tournament director's table and talking to a friend of mine, Todd Barker, on my cell phone. Todd is a big, big Efren fan. So I'm talking to Todd and Efren starts to back away from the director's table and bumps into me. As he mumbles some kind of "excuse me," I say, "Efren, I'm talking to one of your biggest fans on the phone. He'd love to speak to you for a minute if you have the time."

As you might predict, Efren took the phone and started talking to Todd. I guess Todd must have said something about chess (Todd has been a tournament chess player), because Efren invited him to come down (Todd was in Cincinnati right then) and play a game or two of chess.

Efren hands the phone back to me and Todd told me that he was grabbing a chess set and heading my way. A few hours later I saw Todd and Efren pondering moves in a chess game. I don't think they were able to finish the game as Efren had to leave to play a match, but even their partial game went down as one of the highlights of Todd's young life.

And by the way, Todd told me later that he had been in the pool hall when talking to Efren on my cell. He said that when he finished the call, the guys he was playing pool with asked him who he had been talking to. When he casually answered, "That was Efren Reyes on the phone. He asked me to come down and play a few games of chess with him," his buddies looked at him as though he had totally lost it. But they were really impressed when he convinced them that he had, indeed, been talking to The Magician.

FWIW...Here is one of my Efren stories....

A few of us traveled to Riverside (CA.) a few years back for the annul event at Shooters .... Efren was in the field...

Seemed like everyone wanted to play Efren...even for small stakes like $20 a rack 1-hole...I belive (Alex) was the name of the guy that negotiated the games...All Efren did was play and be his usual sheepish humble self...

The night before the tournament started.....One suck...errrrr I mean player negotiated a 1-hole game for $50 a rack...The spot was something crazy like 12-6....The games were played in the back room on the Ernesto tightened tournament tables...The room had bleachers so that people could watch the action.

We were done practicing and decided to sit and watch some of the action...The line was that the guy playing Efren could actually play a bit of 1-hole but was not going to be much of a problem for Efren...

As I watched the match I noticed Efren doing something interesting....He would shoot his shot and then walk around and stand in a certain place around the table...but it was not always the same spot.....Then it hit me what was going on...I nudged my buddy next to me and said watch...Efren knows what the other guy is going to do before (the other guy) does......

Efren would hit his shot....casually stroll around to one side of the table (In his normal Efren canter) and stand there and wait....The guy would think for a minute or two...(or five)... and then shoot a shot.....Seemed like almost every time the guy shot....the CB would end up right in front of Efren...He would get down and shoot his shot and then stroll to the next spot...(where the CB was soon to be going as soon as the guy figured out what his next shot was)

I am not sure anyone else in the room knew what Efren was doing....I was amazed at Efren's ability to know what his opponent was going to do....(before his opponent did)

What amazed me almost as much was the next day...He was standing next to a table and he had his cue laying on the table...As I looked at his cue from a distance it looked a bit strange...I moved in for a closer look. He picked it up off of the table and handed it to me....It was a wrapless cue that he had wrapped himself with black electrical tape.....and I would be hard pressed to find a house cue with more dents and dings in the shaft....Strange thing is though...I would swear I could feel the magic in that cue...

I was in the Cue Club, the guy who owned it called Tony was there and had just smoked Harry Platis giving up 9-6 for $25,000 or so in a set. In walks Scott Frost, Scott as always wants action, this was probably 6 years ago or so, Tony wants to play Scott and offers him 8-7, Scott says no he wants 9-6, Tony says no, Scott says "well then no game". Efren walks in and now he wants to play Tony, Efren is now doing the spot offering and offers Tony 8-7, Tony is now the one wanting more and tells Efren that he gives everyone 9-6 and he wants 9-6, Efren is a little too smart for this playing Tony on his own table with THAT big of a spot and they don't end up playing. But Tony on that one table that he lived on was offering up a spot to Scott and Scott would not take it, Efren walks in and is good enough to do a 180 and offer Tony a spot playing on Tony's own table, and Tony wont take it because it is not enough. At that moment you really get a sense of how good that Efren guy really is. He really could spot anyone in the world at that moment in 1-pocket, there was noone in the world that wanted anything to do with playing him.

On a side note the games don't happen, Scott starts shooting around with Efren's cue trying it out. Snap! Scott takes a shot and Efrens ferrule breaks lengthwise, right before the BCA 9-ball event for that year. It was not a crazy shot Scott hit, just terrible luck to have it happen like that.

This is from a trip report from, I think, the 2000 US Open 1pocket Tournament, up in Kalamazoo, picking it up on day two of the event.

(insert flashback music):

Saturday morning I headed over to the Playground and just tried to get my mind set before my match with, arguably, the greatest all around pool player of all time. When I got to the tournament room, the line was: you could bet either way, whether I'd get to one. I decided that that's what I'd shoot for: to take one game off Efren Reyes. I'd told AllenB, the night before, that I would really appreciate it if he could snap a photo of me lagging with Efren, to prove to future generations that this match had actually taken place. Alan said no problem, and, a man of his word, was there setup in time with his camera and tripod to capture the moment and has already sent me the photo.

Well, we were put on table two, right in front of the largest section of bleachers and they were packed. Everyone wanted to see Efren play. I was just along for the ride. I put down a good lag, but Efren put the ball within an inch of the rail. I looked at my watch. It was one o'clock.

The first game did not go well, for me. He broke the balls well, and I was under the gun the entire game. When he didn't have a shot, he'd gently spin the cue ball one or two rails and snuggle it up against a ball. I, and the crowd, laughed out loud at the positions he'd put me in. I lost the first game 8-0. It was while I was racking the balls to break (it was a rack your own tournament) that the dawning realization came upon me that it was quite possible that, not only could I lose the match 4-0, I could, conceivably: lose the match against a player of this caliber WITHOUT SCORING A SINGLE BALL. Oh, the humiliation. What do you tell the guys back at the pool hall? What will everyone back on RSB think? That you got a chance to play Efren Reyes and didn't score a single ball!!?? Suddenly, not only did my goal of winning one game seem like the only way to maintain my dignity and salvage the honor of RSB, but it also seemed a goal that was now, on further reflection, very, very far away.

I broke well the second game. Shortly after the break, he left me frozen on the side rail just above my pocket. I looked at the rack for a long time. There was an unfrozen three ball combination that just might go. But the only way to hit it right was to send the cue ball into a fourth ball and then have it carom into the third ball in the combination chain. I'd have to hit it at warp speed to get enough energy on the shot to get the last ball in the combination to the pocket. If it didn't go, I was toast, because the stack was going to explode.

IMO, one of the more beautiful shots in pool is when a cluster of balls is stuck hard and the object ball eventually emerges from the stack and slowly begins marching towards it's assigned pocket. Despite shooting with brio, the two ball virtually crawled towards it's destination with total mayhem all around it. As I watched the shot, it seemed as if all the other object balls, and the cue ball, were moving and every single one of them wanted to kiss out the two ball. But somehow it made it safe and sound to its destination. The ball dropped. The crowd burst into applause.

Still, the balls were spread too wide for me to get out. As the game progressed, we got to the point at which I needed two and Efren needed one. And then, something began to become apparent to me, and then to everyone in the stands, and eventually to Efren: Lou was banking well today. Real well. Well, actually, I started banking like god.

Efren kissed into a shot and sold out the last two balls. A modest cut shot with moderately difficult position on the out ball. I missed. All I could hear in the stands were muttered, "Well, he had a chance..." A few innings later, I missed a thin hit to play safe and had to spot a ball. Now I needed three. But then it happened. I banked three and out to take the second game. The monkey was off my back.

Efren took the next game. Twice he tied me up so bad that my only option was to kick three rails and then two rails for an intentional scratch. But I pulled both of them off. The crowd started applauding my shots and the increasingly ridiculous accuracy and consistency of my bank shots.

I took the fourth game 8-0 to tie it up at 2-2. The fifth game we went down to the last three balls, all down table on the side rail just below the side pocket on his side. I needed all three and went for the home run: a carom and combination bank that would send two towards my hole and the third up table to my side. The shot went kaablewwweee, and left Efren straight in. Nonetheless, my banks continued to go, as if on wires.

The last game was another battle, but he was just too strong. I lose 4-2. I looked at my watch, it was 3:30. I had just wrestled with Efren Reyes, in a race to four, for two and a half hours and taken two games off him. I swear I'm not making this up, but during the match Buddy Hall was playing on one side of us, Steve Cook on the other, and during the course of the match I got at least six rounds of applause from the crowd for my bank shots. There was not one round of applause for Hall, Cook, or Reyes. Buddy, in particular, kept looking over wondering what the hell was going on.

As I shook Efren's hand after the match, he said smiling in the high clipped accent he has, "Louis bank good. Miss straight in." That about summed it up.

Quote."I would swear I could feel the magic in that cue".
I have alot of nice cues, but I still play with that signed cue because every shot I take, his signature,in my eyesight, subconsciously makes me shoot better.LOL
I know, it sounds corny.:D
Thanks for the story.

I heard this story 3rd hand in the poolroom about 5 years ago. It goes like this:

Years ago Billy Incardona was running the book during one of the tournaments. He was occupying half of one of the tables, using it as his mobile office for his paperwork, newspapers, etc, related to the book. Efren proceeds to come to the table to hit some balls. Billy starts to get up to move, but Efren motions for him to stay where he is, and that Billy wasn't in his way. Efren puts up all 15 balls on his half of the table, and proceeds to practice rotation for an hour. Not once did Billy's occupation of the one half of the table hinder Efren from making shot after shot for an hour or more.

Maybe Billy will read this and can corroborate it.

I was at Oneside cafe in Manila, just watching a match. Efren was also there, hanging around and waiting for his money-match.

I ordered food, some beef stuff with rice. The waitress came through the room towards me with the plate, and Efren just reached out and stole a piece of meat!

He looked over to me and grinned sheepishly, so what else could I do than grin back. As it turned out, the meat may have been of some questionnable origin, and was somewhat hard to chew. Efren naturally didnt wear his teeth that day, so everytime I looked over at him the next 15 minutes, his whole face was moving, trying to use his gums to chew down the piece of beef he stole from me:grin-square:

LOL,funny story.

The last time I ran into Efren I gave him the 7 and when i was about to win the set I woke up.LOL:shrug::scratchhead:

Years ago I went to see Efren at Hollywood Billiards to play on the Pechauer tournament.
Efren knows me casually as his road manager Alex is a friend of mine.
Before the finals of the tournament I asked Efren if his trophy is committed.
He said there was no trophy AND he'd give me the next trophy he wins.
I told him, I'm driving to Vegas to see him play on the Gabriel's Open.
Guess what. He won it and gave me this trophy.

It will mean nothing to anyone else, but last year at the DCC I got a few autographs on my case (including SVB, Corey, Johnny, Varner, and a few more). Well, of course I wanted Efren's as well. I watched him playing 1P with a guy for nearly 2 hours in a side room (actually across the hall from the AZ room). After the match, I approached him to say what a pleasure it is to see him play in person, and could I possibly bother him for an autograph. SURE, SURE. I took the Sharpie from my case and he looked at the other signatures on the back of the case (probably looking for a place to sign). I told him, NO! NO! and filpped the case over. I told him that he can sign the FRONT of the case...ONLY HIM. He got a BIG smile and little chuckle over that, and signed my It's George on the lid right in the front - Efren BATA Reyes

his is still the only autograph on the front of my case

The owner/part owner at that time was Toby.

I have had the pleasure of living close the the pool room were Efren's best friend was a manager and now owns his own pool room.
One year Efren was in town and it happens to be his birthday. So that night they closed the back room at shooter, riverside, ca, for Efren's birthday party. Lucky for me I was invited and was very happy to attend. There was singing, beer and pool of course. I had the pleaser of playing in a golf game, guess who follows me, Efren of course, I must say I held im to the 2 hole, don''t ask me how but it happened. During this game a shot came up it was Efren's shot, he had a beer in one hand and a mic in the other, he loves the eagle and actually sings ok, although it is quite amusing. Back to the shot he puts down the mic keeps the beer in one hand and picks up his cue, he lays it on the rail to shoot and we all look at him like, Efren this is a serious game your going just sell out, but of course he his a tough spin shot to hod his man, one handed no less and he looks at us like, what, he puts his cue down and goes back to the mic.

Efren is one of the nicest people you will ever meat and I feel privileged to have been able to meet and watch him.

What other superstar can you get to play a game with you for little or no money, Efren is the model for all others to follow.

One of my lasting memories in pool is playing a $10 10-ball ring game at HardTimes and as I'm getting ready to break after having won a game having Efren stroll up and lay down $10 on the rail in front of me.

Getting paid off by the greatest all-around player to ever play the game: priceless.

My Efren story or how I almost put Efren out of the game of pool:eek:.

Met Efren in the fourth round of the Turning Stone Classic One. Part of Mike Zuglan's schtick is to introduce the players at their table before the beginning of each match. Went to my table and sat down. My cue was resting at my right side. Suddenly, my cue moved violently to the side. Looked up. There was a blue circle on Efren's forehead right between his eyes. My heart sank. Was as low as low could be. A half inch lower and he'd have put my tip directly into one of his eyes. He laughed! He had done something foolish. Wasn't paying attention. As he always seems to do in those situations, he laughed. When I saw him at the DCC the next year, I mentioned the incident to him. He laughed. Amazing, just amazing. The Magician indeed!

Whether he is the greatest all around player of all time or not, Efren has to be the greatest pool person I've ever met. Can't understand a word he says. Thankfully, his cue does most of the talking for him!

So Spanky-did you never go for your hole-too busy holding Efren??

Who was in that game? Usual suspects? Glen/Aaron Aragon/owner Bill/Alex/Zay/Jazznpool Martin/Ray/'Biscuit'/Nick???

Is there anything funnier than to hear Efren's high pitched-"20($) coming" while giggling and smiling when somebody goes for a risky kick or rolls long aftter missing a thin table length cut?

I'm guessing there was a table of Filipinos playing cards. That game where you fan out a top and bottom set while playing the hand.

Did you guys have cabbage and rice with squid juice? (an acquired taste)

I didn't make that party-but I can imagine it.

BTW-sadly,that Golf table is for sale on Craigs list currently.

Thanks for the story, Spank. Good times.

A couple of shots Efren made several years ago

while passing thru the area.

At Shooters-Riverside, Ca playing friendly with Alex-trying out Alex's Judd. I think the two ball were slightly separated.

CueTable Help

At Alex's new room-Ranch Cucamonga, Ca playing some race to 3 sets with a local for cheap. The two balls caught up to each other just past mid table and rolled in tandem into pocket. CB stuck on rail for no opponent shot to his pocket.

CueTable Help

This night I tried the cabbage and squid juice. I didn't go back for seconds.

I've tried both shots dozens of times. I don't get there.
