email accounts being hacked?

im far from a computer geek,
so please forgive my non-usage of the correct terminology here

starting about a month ago, i began getting spam emails from jeff duke aka dukeboy177
then this past week, from art, my buddy, 01rkclassic
then from jeff eason

i have talked with art & jeff, but not jeff
neither knows what's going on and it surely wasnt them that sent these emails

the only common denominator we can think of,
between me & those guys, is this forum

does that mean, MY email has been hacked into? just thiers? both?

what do we do about it?
dont worry about it?

anyone else getting strange emails?

remember,
you have to explain this to a severly "computerly challenged" person :embarrassed2:

Not sure if this helps much but... A friend of mine appeared to have sent me some emails. When I opened them, there was a link. I clicked it, trusting the sender. It turned out to be from a Canadian pharmacy that hijacked her email contacts and her email address to propagate spam. She changed from hotmail or yahoo to a gmail account. I don't know if she did some scans, anti-virus or whatnot. My internet security (norton) has kept me clean and I'm not aware of my contact list being hijacked.

What kind of emails did you get? Advertising spam like in my case? Is your security up to speed?
 
If it's just the average malware type of deal you can change your passwords and get around it all fairly easy. If that doesn't help, well Best Buy is having a sale ;)

ive got norton, spybot, malware
i run them once a week, but i think, again, i'm ignorant of this stuff, but i think the norton stuff runs daily, in the middle of the nite.

i have changed all of my passwords too

Pretty sure this isn't you, it's them. THEIR email has been hacked. I'm getting the same thing from one person - spam emails every day with only a link. I created a "Filter" and am having any emails from this person deleted automatically.

I tried to email the person to let them know, but the email just returns a spam email back to me with another crazy link that I refuse to click on. Ugh.

oh, one more thing i forgot to mention

the emails are not only to me
there's a boatload of other emails addresses,
the same mail was sent to
and those are unknown email addresses to me
 
I have Gmail. Get anywhere from 30 to 100 messages a day in the spam folder that gmail automatically filters out. I read articles that tell you to forward them to the FBI for investigation. If I did this and the FBI investigated everyone that was sent to it would take me too much time and I am sure that the FBI don't have the resources to handle it.
 
The emails are likely not coming from the person it appears they come from. Now, before you say 'no shiit'...

I recall reading elsewhere that spammers disguise the actual email that is sending the shiit- making it look like it comes from a legit source- without actually having access to the (legit source) email.

Yep, THEIR email was hacked. Just delete them.

This is true. I have an app on my phone that can do that and also send anonymous emails.
 
BHQ...You're not alone. I have also been getting spam emails from several AzBr's. However, after contacting them, they did not send them, and knew nothing about them. Always the emails are only links to somewhere else, and I immediately delete them without opening them.

Hi Guys,

This is one of the most common email hacks out there today. Like another poster mentioned it is pretty easy (for geeks like me) to obtain the address book of one of the online email hosts (gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc). It is even easier to create "spoof" emails and send them to that entire address book. If you forward me the email's in question, I can look at the complete email header and try to narrow it down to the host/domain where these originated from. Forward message to pip9ball@gmail.com.

I use MS Outlook and I set up instructions "they are called Rules in the Outlook program" to send junk to the delete folder. This works well if you continue to get email from the same address, but if the sender's address changes then the rule won't pick it up. Spam is a pain in the neck for all of us and I wish there was a simple solution to stop the junk mail, but as far as I know there isn't.

uugghhh. Jeff eason. Stiffed me and a lot of others. I hate to see his name.

Lol i know this has nothing to do with your thread. Just havent seen his name in a while. He stole my money!!! Lol
 
more than likely what happened was... the person you're getting the spam from, picked up a virus or trojan off the web or a email, and it snagged his whole address book and it said "Thanks numbnuts for all the live email addresses" and now it's continuing to spam you and everyone on the list.

Which brings me to another point. You know all these spam messages that say, if you don't want to any more of this crap, reply to the this message with something in the subject. It may legitimately take you off the list, but another trick to the trade is this... any reply you just sent, has now told them there is a live body at the end of that email address that got their spam. Now they can add your email to a list and turn around and sell it to someone else and truthfully say, these emails are known good emails. That kind of list is valuable to spammers.

It may be doing it from his PC, or it may not. That type of attack is why Microsoft, in Outlook 2003 and later, started putting a fix in, that when enabled, would pop up a warning that something was trying to send mail from your Outlook client and was trying to access your address book.

There are so many ways you can get infected these days, it's not even funny. But the 2 most popular are going to be email spams that contain infections, (that people have been warned over and over for years now, NOT to open attachments or click links from anything they're not sure of, but you would be amazed at how many still do:smile:) and the web browsing ones.

You got to be REEEEEL careful on the Net anymore. It's easy to get redirected to a bad site. The adware/malware/spyware scum will try anything to get their crap on your PC. Think of it like this... if it's popular (mp3's, screensavers, backgrounds.. etc:) you need to be very careful what you click on or download.

Any time you click on something and you get popups... hit your Ctrl/Alt/Delete button and click the Task Manager, go to Applications and click on any browser entry you have open there, and choose End Task. You can try using Alt F4 to close as many as you can initially, but you don't want to click ANYWHERE inside the popup. I don't care if it says No or Cancel or whatever, it all does the same thing... install crap on your PC. It should be safe to click the top right X to close it too, but when you got crap popping up everywhere, you don't want to miss a little X:smile:

Plus when you get the ones that popup as fast as you can close them, they're just hoping you give up and click inside one of them. If you got that going on.. windows popping up faster then you can close them.. just turn your PC off if you have to.

And scan, scan, scan. And have all your stuff backed up somewhere. BE CAREFUL!
