ENCOURAGEMENT FOR NEW (or old), QMAKERS

BLACKHEARTCUES

About 5 yrs ago I played at a small pool hall. There was a 16 yr old kid that showed some pool skills, so I took him under my wing. I taught him what little I know about the game I love. He asked me to make him a Q & said his Dad would pay for it. When the Q was done, the Dad welched on payment. I wanted the kid to have the Q, so I let him cut my grass to pay for it. I also put him to work on a lathe I have in the garage, making butt caps & joint rings. He liked the work, so I asked him if he would like to try making a Q for himself. The pic of the Q with the COCO handle is the BLACK HEART I made for him & the Ebony/Tulip Q is the one he designed & built. He did every thing on the Q except the finish, which I sprayed. It just shows, with a little help & some good equipment anyone can succeed. This yr he graduated from an electronic trade school & now plays on my APA team...JER

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:FOR YOU JER
NICE THING TO DO

Hey, I'm Encourageable!! Or is it Incorrigible!?!?! But I haven't been 16 for 40-something years. Darn, I guess I've missed out!

But seriously, that was really nice of you on a number of fronts - nice free cue, free expert instruction, use of your own equipment. Green rep for you!!

Gary

Very very good to see. The sport needs more of this. We need to encourage all the children of today in this type of way. Glad to see it.

Very cool story. I am sure your influence will pay off over a lifetime for that young man. Bravo.

And....I like his design. Very nice contrast. That young man didn't just learn, I believe he demonstrated he has talent.

Jerry,

Mentoring is what makes the world of difference for the next generation.

Great Job,

Rick

it sure is
did anyone else notice the kid isnt playing on a cell phone or messing around on facebook ?
there's hope yet

Now that is just too much to ask for...... lol

I'll bet JER told him not to touch the cell phone when running any machinery.

I have grand kids that text each other when they are sitting next to each other at the kitchen table.

It pisses me off .............. does that mean I am old??????

lol

like many of us, i am shaped by the various mentors and role models that i have had.

i'm sure that he holds you in a very lofty place that only a few hold in his life.

i wish both of u the best.

if you "texted" your friends/brother next to you with two tin cans and a string,
youre old , damn old

Actually the 1st thing I did with him, was turn on the lathe & put a carrot next to the spinning chuck. IT SHREDDED THE CARROTT. I turned around & I knew that I had made my point, by the wide eyed look on his face. SAFETY, SAFETY ,SAFETY...JER

have u seen the old commercials of the egg, frying pan and the saying, "this is your brain, this is your brain on drugs."

reminds me of that method of teaching.

bravo

Truely an example!! Pass it on!!! That which you share will multiply... share the good!!

man, when i was his age, i'd given anything to have somebody take me under thier wing like jer did him
he's a very lucky young man,
and hopefully years from now he can pay it forward
jer is goin' to heaven someday
(hope there's a bunch of lathes & piles of wood awaiting him there)
