Fading earily in the morning

First: I usually wake up about 5 am to go to work Monday through Friday.

Thursday night (I was off Friday) I was playing one of my normal opponents. We started playing around 9:00 pm (one pocket). By about 12:30 I had him stuck 5 games. But then he wins 5 in row and we quit at 2:00 am (even). It probable doesn't help that he works at the pool hall and is a much better player than I am.

I started getting tired. My stroke started failing me and I became my own worst enemy.

I don't know whether I should just stop playing past midnight or continue and try to get mentally and physically stronger.

Any thoughts?

Steven

Always try to get better.
Maybe re-evaluate what is to be gained by playing past where you are comfortable.

How old are you? What kind of condition?

I'm a geezer, but I find that 5-hour Energy perks me up considerably, with no ill effects on my play.

Simple: don't play til 2AM....

I HATE playing when tired. So I don't. If i go to the poolhall on a Saturday night (the group I golf with EVERY Sat. morning has the first 4 teetimes - VERY EARLY) I just won't play for anything after 10PM. Makes sense to me. I know guys that like to play those SUPER LONG sessions, but I guess I don't care enough about the game to be one of those. It'd be like trying to play a round of golf after being up 18-20 hours....no thanks. Depriving myself of sleep or rest tells me nothing about my game (regardless of what that game is), but apparently to some it's some kind of test of manhood. lol I'll stick to having a reasonably normal sleep schedule, and letting my body tell me when it's tired instead of trying my damnedest to preform when I'm not sharp.

The exception for me is the Derby....and let anyone who's been tell you honestly how long it takes to recover from that week after they get back. It's not healthy to try to do that all the time (3-4 days with little sleep, then maybe a 12 hour total crash, and then back at it again for 3-4 days).

I don't care if you work out 6 days a week, eat perfectly, guzzle energy drinks, etc. etc. etc. When you are tired, you are tired.

I would guess- 1.He is old enough to know better, young enough not to really care.
2.Even if you have the next day "off" it probably isn't a good idea to ingest
a 5 hour energy at 2 a.m. !:p

Make sure that you eat a little something every two to three hours. It will keep your blood sugar on more of an even keel and prevent crashing.

5 Hour Energy is your friend... They work and don't give you the jitters.

Chewing gum helps. By chewing it forces you to breath more regularly and helps your blood oxygen level. Helps for concentration mainly.

I'm 48 and in reasonable good health (sounds like an insurance commercial). I run 2 miles 4 days a week. The guy I was playing is maybe 20 years younger. The only energy drink I've ever used is coffee in the mornings.

I should probably just set a time limit and stick to it. Its not like I'm trying to condition myself to become a stone cold gambler. I just hate quieting someone winners. Also, I only have so many hour a week I can devote to pool. When I make it to the pool hall I like to play because it maybe a week before I can play again. I guess I'm addicted to this game.

I use to work at pool and a few of the older guys back then would state prior to matching up if they had to quit by a certain time because of prior commitments. I never had problem with this because we would play again.
As long as no one is doing anything nitty ( like coming in thursday with 60 bucks wanting to play 20 a game one pocket winning a hundred and coming back next thursday with only 60 again). I never had a problem with it.

Just let em know in advance about stopping at a specified time and that who ever is up agrees to give the loser a shot to win back his money later. A piece of advice, leave at that time no matter what, if you are stuck it is not not reasonable to suddenly expect to keep playing

yep specified time is usually good in most people's books, but the coming in the next Thurs with 60 bucks again is NOT nitty....the person stuck 5 games is stuck 5 games not $100. He can win it back $20 at a time the same way he lost it, unless the guy that's up agrees to go $40 or $50 a game....he's not obligated to lose that money back faster than he won it.

I try not to play too much outside of my normal sleep/wake schedule for the same reasons you mentioned. I have a half-hour commute and start work at 7:30AM, so I'm normally in bed by 10PM. I don't play good pool at midnight, so I just try to avoid it.

1.5 hr commute @7am...

It is a helluva handicap to play while you have:
been up 20hrs,
worked a fulll day
knowing you have to be at work in 6hrs.

In a big picture sense, I am not sure pulling up at 1am 2sets winner is asking anymore of the loser than that which the loser asks of the winner (to keep playing under the above conditions).

That said, some big scores have happened after midnight and sometimes you get in good pool-coma.

There is very little threat of me leaving winner. I think that's why the pool hall is full and people are in fist fights in the parking lot over who gets to play me next.

usually start about 3 or 4 in the afternoon and quit about 8 or 9pm....this last saturday turned into a marathon that lasted until 2 am.....way past my bedtime! played good until 10 and then went downhill.....got a little ticked off as i just could not understand why i was missing those easy shots (duh).....decided to keep playing until i got better....that was around midnight.....played better until 2 and then i just couldn't walk around the table anymore........i am in my mid 60's! won't do that again anytime soon! i wonder how many miles we walk every hour?

First to the op, nothing wrong with quiting winner if you set up a quit time ahead of time and of course agree to come back if you're winner. Oldplayer, I was thinking of attaching a pedometer and seeing how many miles I walk in a 6 or 8 hour session. You might be suprised.

Steven,
No matter what your age, you are fighting an uphill battle. If you are getting up at 5 am and working all day then going to the pool hall without taking naps or sleeping some, you are always going to be fighting the fatigue factor. I often take an hour nap before going to the pool room at night. Also, I frequently drink one cup of coffee before going to the pool room but coffee doesn't make my nerves chatter and it barely wakes me up but it has a positive impact on my focus. BTW, I only drink one cup in the morning and one cup of coffee at night.

I've started carrying one of those 5 hour energy drinks in my case for backup and drank a half bottle of it about a week ago and it may or may not have helped. The school's out on 5 hour for me but I have heard it works well for others....

Many people do not get up until after 12:00 noon and they have a distinct advantage over the working man no matter what the age of the WM...
Somehow, you have to balance out the energy level/focus factor. I like the nap routine myself.

I did that last Saturday . I played for 4 hours and counting in a couple trips to the bathroom and some outside smoke breaks the count on the pedometer was near 1800 steps. Dont know how many miles that is but 1800 steps suprised me.
