fargo ratings aren't very good or accurate

Way off topic, but there's a very old. little known (almost a secret) classic chess book by Aron Nimzowitsch called 'My System' which is simply fantastic. Kind of like a pool lesson with Scott Lee that just transforms the way you play. HIGHLY recommended, if your kids have the motivation to absorb this kind of stuff they'll be way ahead of the pack in their chess conquests. I pretty much owe my meager successes in chess to this book.

Totally on topic! I'm getting this book!

Just watched game one, Chessnetwork is the best youtuber I've seen and he does a great commentary in about 20 minutes of this game, just posted.

I have learned a lot watching his videos, and some others like John Bartholomew. But if you haven't seen Chessbrah's videos there are two you MUST watch. GM Eric Hansen is an online wizard and posts some epic videos-

Blindfolded team bullet chess. The name says it all, but you have to see it to believe it:

Hyperbullet berserk, Eric plays with 15 seconds on his clock and rocks it:

Any system like Fargo Rate or any handicapped league worth its salt all run on data. Data driven beasties. The longer and more often you play, the more accurate your rating or handicap becomes. Simple...

I think Fargo has an actual rating as to how accurate the rating is LOL.... says something like "Current" or some such thing. I think it should give an actual number of contributing reports which constitute the number being displayed for the rating....

Say I'm rated a 6xx, but I know for sure that there are only 4 events that would ever report to Fargo at most. Just because I placed in the money at 4 tournaments tells anyone not looking at numbers that I can get out pretty consistently. Its hard to know what the number means with regard to most mortals that like to gamble. They dont know how tall they are in that valley of giants. There has to be a comparative scale. Im sure there is a nifty algorithm that makes handicaps, but I cant see an algorithm. I wanna see how large/small my skill is. Gimme a pie chart or something.

I stopped reading after "so here is my question/beef with fargo ratings. Fargo has me ranked..."

There was one time where the gripe was obviously legitimate and it was at the BCA National Championships 2016, the guy somehow had a rating of 1056 or something mathematically impossible. He and his friend were joking about getting shirts made ha ha, but to be perfectly honest when he walked about to complain about his rating I internally rolled my eyes and prepared for crying about unfair practices and the usual "I don't play anymore", etc etc.

Neil

Edit: My rating has gone up constantly over the passed few months even though I haven't played since the BCA/Vegas Event, my goal was to reach 700 and I accomplished it without competing, practicing or even stepping into the pool room ha ha.

Games from your impressive run in the gold team event in July just went in a few weeks ago.

I could use some enlightment on fargo without having to trudge through some long reading. thanks, steve

1. You are clearly not illiterate because your sentence structure looks pretty good.
2. You are clearly able to understand how to post and search posts on AZB
3. There are thousands of explanatory posts, web pages, and videos explaining Fargo
4. Get off your lazy ass and educate yourself. We are not your goddamn mother.

I suspect the original post was a form of bragging....
...and he has a right to....good shooting.

'Course, many people can be intelligent but perceive things from their own limited sphere
of interest......which produces a lot of skewed views.

I got a friend....if the weather forecast says 60% chance of rain...and it doesn't rain...
...he says the weather people are a bunch of morons.....
....and math was his long suit in school....

so here is my question/beef with fargo ratings.
fargo has me ranked 18th on the list below,

Lol...I'm not even kidding - when someones asks me who my favorite player is I say Steve Knoll. No joke man. You're a goddamn beast, I saw you play once and it left such an impression that's what I tell people now.

Dude...maybe you ARE the 18th best player...playing part time. That's pretty strong,

PT, I think what he was getting at was this : algorithms aside, conventional wisdom would tell us there's no way he is better than a ton of people that he's ranked above on that list. Some will say this or that but be honest - who would you bet on if they were to play even - that's the real test.

Oh, a little more 'robustness' will make him settle down on the list....
.....or maybe he's gonna find that he belongs there.....that would be nice for him.

Stranger things have happened....some times a road player hustles a local for the 8...
......and finds out he needs the 7 with it.
I know a bar player, years ago, who played a stranger for hours, two days in a row....
....the stranger left town....dead even.
The local found out that the guy was current World 8-ball champion....
...hell, he didn't know he was that good.....so he went on the road, also.

So you speak for everyone in that eloquent language?? I bet they would say no to that statement sir. As far as lazy, you just show your ignorance by calling somebody you don't even know lazy. I'm far from lazy.
This is why I rarely post on here because of people like you that just want act like a dick! If mark or the guy that created this Fargo , who didn't even have the decency to answer my fb message want to stake me against most any player from 19th to 100, i will pay my own way to venue. If your that confident in Your rating system, should be easy $.
For the few who made some nice compliments, thank you

My own limited sphere of interest? Lol you guys are too much. I've been around competitive pool for a long time. I'm smart enough not to make it a livelihood. So I may know plenty about pool.
Oh , and bragging is not something that I do, you could verify that if you knew anyone that knows me well. I have plenty of humility. Thx for the sort of compliment.

This guy beats Shane Van Boening and Justin Bergman straight up - granted, in short races, but still victories - and complains about being highly ranked? This is even worse than the league player who was complaining about having "no chance for victory" because she was put in the middle of a handicap grouping at nationals.

Yep, I played a guy in Ohio at a tournament many years ago, think it had to do with league(went with friends so I could gamble),

Anyway, I play this guy for 3+ hours on a Valley BB 9ball and end up 3 games down -

Needless to say all my friends were laughing their asses off when I got back to the room...until I told them I was only 3 games down.

They inform me I've been playing some Champion and thought I was broke. Lol

I never Gambled with any of the guys I went with, so they really didn't know if I could play or not. They all played mostly shortstop speed to B+

Btw, he quit.

I'm pretty interested to know what the problem is most here would be thrilled to be 18th on that list unless they were trying to fly under the radar which you seemed to have done pretty good thus far no info on the money list or BCA points list ,,
Beating Berg 5-1 back that up with a 5-4 against Shane and lose to Corey n Kang on the hill is monster playing
If your doing this as a weekend warrior you might be the best kept secret in the country
My best guess is you choose to fly under the radar and that's exactly the reason what Fargo rate is in existence

By any chance could you share the results of our teams, would love to see our won/loss records broken down by individual or team. We got very lucky to get to that position and honestly we thought we were doomed like last year where we drew a monster of a team in the 1st round. Again it went 12-12 with my being the anchor but this time I squeaked out a win playing against New Zealand's top female player, would have never heard the end of it if I dogged it....again.

Did she have a really long last name? Really pretty? If so I've seen her play on YouTube. She can play.

I don't have a Fargo rating, but when I started the new USAPL league, everyone was a 50 to start before you get your rating. That's about a 4 in APA. I would be the top rating in APA, maybe one bellow that if I am really playing stupid. So I got to play people that were actually 50s as a 50 when I should be double that or so.

After the 3 matches to establish rankings for everyone, I was moved up to a 125 which is the highest rank you can get in the USAPL. That is about an A+ player.

I am not an A+, but because of the ratings vs weaker players with my playing even, the ranking system got tricked and put me about 25-40 points over what I should be.

After a few years I am settled at the 80-90 ranking in 9 and 10 ball, at times I reach near 100. But after those 3 matches the ranking system had me at 125.

This is her, sorry for it being a Snooker picture but it's the one that had the best lighting on her face. The whole team was super cool just like the NY team we lost to the year before in the 1st round, every time we saw both teams we were genuinely interested in how they were doing and wished them luck in their upcoming matches. We loved every minute of both years even though we did much better this year, the camaraderie and bonding was an amazing thing...finishing so well was honestly just the cherry on top of an already very delicious cake.

Edit: Her name is Molrudee Kasemchaiyanan and she was as nice as she was competitive, that team was a pleasure to compete against but we hope NOT to draw them again....ever ha ha.
