Hello,

I had to go back to the Detroit for a couple days with my wife and we found ourselves in Downtown Detroit looking for a quick snack w/my Mother-in-law. I suggested one of my favorite places to go after the poolroom closed, Lafayette Coney Island. Not even sure if it was open anymore since I haven't been there since 1976, but we took a chance and drove the 7 minutes to where I remember it being. It was there! The trick in the old days was to be there when the fresh banana cream pies where rolling in, which was usually around 3:30-4:00AM.

We bellied up to the counter and had 3 coney's w/everything (mustard, chili & onions) on a perfectly steamed bun and a hot dog that snapped every time you bit into it; we split a slice of banana cream pie and had two sodas for $12. I was in heaven. My wife could not say no to my request to go there because she's been hearing me talk about it for almost 30 years. LCI did not disappoint.

What are some of your favorite places to go after the room closed?

In St.Louis, a greasy spoon called Courtesy diner. Order a Slinger, it's a beef pattie covered with two eggs, hash browns, chili. A side order of toast and big glass of milk and your set. p.s. It helps to be inebriated.

Sounds yummy - perfect after hours food.

Unfortunately we don't have any great greasy spoons here.
My wife can cook up a pound of bacon in no time and her early morning bacon and eggers or BLTs will knock your socks off.

Considering it usually costs approx $30 for 2 plates of bacon and eggs and coffee, I'll go for my wifes cooking any night after pool.

Altho the local Denny's was serving up some good old mix of biscuits, gravy
sausages, the regular heart attack on a plate that was pretty decent until they stopped serving it. The special was named after a Country Band.

Different cities have different "after gambling hours" spots.

Chicago has some good Greek diners where you get a ton of excellent food for a great price.

Charlotte, NC had a great diner down the street from Mother's back 10 years ago. I can't remember the name of it, but I can tell you it was definitely a local favorite.

I also went to the Highway 56 Diner in Olathe, KS almost every morning for breakfast after gambling all night.

Usually if you don't know of a local spot a Waffle House will always do.

I'm so old now, so the answer to your question would be ......BED !!!!

:D

Bed sounds real good to me too!!! I haven't closed a room in many many years. I did make to 1:30 a.m. a couple of years ago, and that was only because I placed in a local tournament. And that took care of me for a few days.

:boring2:

If I came home from the pool hall just in time for my wife to cook me breakfast I'm pretty certain all I would get would be the frying pan.

pool halls close?

There was always a place to play until time to go to work on my day job the next morning. On the way to work at about half past four in the morning I passed by what I am pretty sure was the original Krispy Kreme. None of those puny little donuts like they serve now and they were coming hot off of the line when I went by there every morning. Hot fluffy and sweet, I'd buy a couple dozen and a quart of milk and wolf a half-dozen down while they were hot! The sugar overload did a pretty good job of clearing the beer and no sleep cobwebs out of my head and I was good to go.

Places on the near side of the river closed at two and there were a few places to eat on Airline, just the normal greasy spoons. What always struck me as funny was the clientele. Every customer in the place would be a cop, a drunk, or a rounder, with a sprinkling of naked dancing ladies that had just gotten off work. I always half expected the police to make us queue up and just slap the bracelets on all of us just on general principles. None of the food was exceptional in any of these places.

In NYC, nothing beat a 3AM Jewish deli pastrami on rye with mustard. We used to go to the Sage Deli with Johnny Ervolino after a long night in the pool room. His favorite was chicken in the pot. Every waitress knew him by name and always gave him extra.

God, I forgot the little trailers on the streets of Toronto called Shopsies.
Al that and Fran, you forgot to add a big dill pickle with that.

The place we always went after hours was on the northside, which is where Chris' Billiards is...a place called The Blue Angel, just off Milwaukee and Northwest Highway. All the players went there. It was still open a few years ago...don't know if it still is.

In Virginia, it was always Mario's Pizza House. Back in the '70s, they were open all night long, which was a novelty. When we didn't want the night to end, we formed a convoy of cars and met up over there in Virginia. I can still remember their jingle: "Mario's Pizza House in Arlington Town." They were famous for their steak and cheese subs. They're in the same location in Wilson Boulevard in Arlington: Mario's Pizza House.

Many a night, though, living life on the cheap, we'd get a bag of burgers from Little Tavern. Their slogan was "Buy 'em by the bag," and we did.

Man, I can still remember waking up with the indigestion from wolfing down those burgers the night before. :embarrassed2:

Have you ever been to 'Mammer Jammers' ? No Idea if it is still there, used to be by Wash U. They had bumper stickers "Don't drive drunk, eat Mammer Jammers".
Made a good samwich!
