Interesting story coming out of the US Open today.

There was a verbal exchange between Earl and Sally with Inside Pool magazine. I understand the exchange was fairly one sided with Earl doing most of the talking. Before long, JR entered into the conversation and the volume level raised by a few notches.

Not sure what all the comments were between JR and Earl, but it ended with both of them lunging at each other and Scott Smith having to separate them. As JR was leaving the room, he reportedly yelled back at Earl something about him 'watching his back'.

I am sure we havn't heard the last of this one.

I'm glad to see that somebody that has some affect on Pool has finally taken a stand against Earl. We all know that Earl might be the best tournament Nine ball player.......Can't argue with a 5 time U.S. Open champion. That doesn't mean we have to support his childish antics when he plays bad or his opponent gets lucky. I really wish the UPA would somehow start running every PRO tourny here in the states.....Because then Earl would have to stop showing his butt and conform to some kind of guidelines on sportsmanship. I personally think this is also the only route to getting some kind of respect and money they deserve for the lifetimes they have committed to this game.

Sorry, I must be missing the obvious?

Who is JR ??

Thanks!

Rick S.

No doubt it would be JR Calvert of Inside Pool magazine.

"Let's Get It On" Where is the BCN Coverage?

:-)

I'm sure JR would fight Earl on the TV table, even though Earl played his last match on it.

maybe Earl will get the message if they just leave him off the Mosconi
cup team.

An interesting idea, Tex, but Matchroom would take exception. They know Earl is a big draw.

Line??

I'll Take Earl for 500 V BUCKS...

Anyone want to cover it??

Earl off the Mosconi Cup??

NEVER gonna happen!! Hell, he's half the draw.

Rick S.

You got that right. At last year's Mosconi Cup in Vegas there were plasma TVs suspended from the lighting rig around the table and they showed a clip of Earl's miss that lost the USA the 2002 Cup over and over again prior to his rematch with Davis.

As an Englishman being able to watch Davis wipe Strickland out in that match was a memory I'll treasure forever.

I'll take that bet and raise you 2000. I think Earl has more than he can handle in JR Calvert.

As for the Mosconi Cup - Earl is not half the draw but Hearn can count on Earl's Jerry Springer antics to cause controversey and subsequent discussion.

I personally think that the Mosconi Cup can do without Earl. I think that pro pool can do without Earl. I do respect his game but his attitude stinks. Peaple like to compare him to McEnroe and I find that the only comparison that is apt is the fact that both of them are more known for their antics than their accomplishments. In all the times I watched McEnroe I never saw him be openly racist and whiningly petulant. I saw him dispute calls plenty of times and make comments about it but I never saw him just ridiculing his opponent, making racist comments or otherwise being a lowlife.

Earl Strickland needs to get some pyschotherapy and come back to the game with the right attitude. Then we might see an even greater dominance than he has previously produced.

He bitches about the state of Pro pool but then pulls crap like this to do his part to convince anyone with any inclinination to invest in pro pool that they are better off sponsoring spelling bees.

McEnroe, whose excellence as a player was indisputable, was known for his antics and occasional indiscretions, but, as you say, he still generally managed to travel the high road. He is a quality person, and he has fully redeemed himself, establishing himself as one of the more important good-will ambassadors his sport has ever known. He has played a major role in promoting the Davis Cup and Juniors tennis, and has proven to be an insightful and entertaining commentator for pro tennis.

There is absolutely no chance of Earl having the positive impact on pool that McEnroe has had on tennis. Like McEnroe, he has the visibility to have a great impact, but, unlike McEnroe, he has no real sense of how to raise the profile of his sport. It's a shame, but it's true.

Is there any remaining reason to question why the king of jerks is NOT in the HOF ???

tap, tap, tap you got that right!! he talks about playing the right
way and all that. as a player he's one of the greatest, but me
thinks he has a couple screws loooose.

I know Sally personally.
She used to live out here in SoCal.
You really have to be near sub-human to embarass her in public.

Or he might never win again.

Earl Strickland is a big part of why the Camel Tour folded like a pancake. Earl is why he is not currently in the hall of fame. I personally think he is the best 9-ball player even with considering guys like Reyes, Parica and etc...If Earl was a better person and had a personality like Reyes, then Earl would have open more doors for pool and himself years ago!

Giving the Devil his due...
JR said that Earl did apologize to him later on, although the general concensus was that he really should have apologized to Sally. If I recall correctly, I believe JR also was looking for both Scott Smith and Berry to apologize to them for his part in the whole mess, a typically classy move on JR's part. It's a shame that two people as nice as Sally and JR got drawn into this whole situation in the first place.
