First cue: $3-450

First post, Dave here from southern Wisconsin. I'm looking for my first cue and am looking to spend about 450 max. I've played with a McDermott, it hit nice but felt a little muddy. A gentleman allowed to play with a cue that was made by the same cue maker in the Philippines who made Efren Reyes' cue (said it cost about $500), and I fell in love with it but did not have the money at the time.

I've been reading through posts and have found several custom cue makers in WI but they all seem to be a little pricey. I like simple tastes like McDermott's Genesis Dark English (http://www.mcdermottcue.com/mg03_a.asp) but would like something that would hit a little tighter perhaps. So far I cannot find any Schon's in the FS section or anything in my price range that tickles my fancy either, lol. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Dave

Thanks for the quick reply, but I should have noted in my post that I'm looking for a 20 ounce. Your cue is nice but the silver wrap would throw me off. Good luck with the sale.

lol - I guess the natural sunlight may make it look like that, but it is white with double black speck irish linen...as for the weight, no problem adding weight to most cues (including this one). So, if you see one that you do like that is 18.5oz or 19 oz. or even 21 oz., be sure to ask the owner if the weight bolt can be changed to get it to the 20oz. that you desire....good luck in the search

Check out joseycues.com. I have on order a very nice looking sneaky pete from Keith Josey. It was under your $450 limit. Keith and his wife are great to work with and will answer any question you have.

You can buy a whole lot of good playing cues for less than $450. You will find used Schon and Predator production cues for less then $450, I am sure.

Personally, if you want playability, I think I would opt for a custom made sneaky pete. Someone already mentioned Keith Josey as an option, and that would be a great one. Others that you can find a sneaky by for less than $450...Bob Frey, Judd Fuller, Leon Sly, Kevin Varney, Ryan Theewan (RAT Cues), Cory Barnhart and just a ton of other quality cuemakers. In fact, sneakies by most of these guys can be found for less than $350.

I would definitely consider either Paul Sumrall (S&S Cues) or Lee Peppers
(LP Custom Cues). Both should be able to make you a nice cue to your
specs. for $ 450.00. Both are posters here, and great guys to deal with.
With a little searching, you can find pictures of each ones work here on AZ.
Below are links to each Cuemakers website. Welcome to the forum, and
good luck with your search.

Dave,

One poster on the for sale / trade forum is offering an Ariel Carmeli "Fancy Pete". It is within your price range. Bought one months ago. Can not say enough good things about the cue. Right balance. Weight. Two shafts. Just a great playing cue. Don't get lost in the looks of a cue. It's got to play well first! Everything else is pure ego IMHO.

Hi Dave, look at this post, there's a nice new Schon on eBay auction within your price range. It's 19.25oz, but I suppose some weight can be added to make it 20oz.

cues

There are several on my website that you are welcome to visit. Happy holidays and happy hunting. If I can help let me know. I have several that are being completed soon in that range also. If interested I can send a picture of them. All are designed as players cues first.

I picked up a Mali years ago for $150. 3/8 pin wood to wood joint. It played more solid then a Mcdermott. I still use it often at home.
Either find a cue with a hit you like first. Or stay low on price. You dont wanna be stuck with something you dont want.
If you interested in trying a Mali, I would sell it. I have a offer on another custom so I could use a few extra dollars.
Also like and have a few Lucasi's I could sell.

Thank you guys a ton. I never knew that there this many choices. Currently I'm leaning towards Josey's cues butwillcontinue to look around in the FS section and online to make sure on my choice. Again, thank you all. I'll be lurking around although not much of a poster, but I love the information on forums.

Lots of good cue makers listed here. From personal experience, I can say you'll like shooting with a Josey.
