first report from Galveston

And full of......POKER PLAYERS!!!!
Let's travel across the country walk in with a great case with great cues, and whip out..... a deck of cards.
Who understands poolplayers anyway.....lol:grin-square:
Looks like it's going to be a long night.... minis starting every few minutes and more action than a porn convention:grin-square:

To me, the biggest news is the non-seeded format for the ladies. they are knocking off each other like crazy. My take is in the article at this link. Send any questions, and I will try to post later. thanks.

I have been reading several articles in recent times by the author of that article: R.C. Lawley.

He's obviously into pool. I like reading his articles. We need more people just like him. You don't read very many pool articles in mainstream media, and I love it that this guy is writing. Last month, he had a cool article about top Alabama players, to include Scotty Townsend.

Let's community organize pool and get the message out there. Hey, it got Obama elected.

so youre saying that there is no value in pro sports to athletes having access to coaches or trainers? that they would all get better if they just went out and played? really?

brian

atheletes? Yes. pro pool players? No. Personal trainer for physical fitness/conditioning? Everyone on the planet can benefit from that but very few pros would benefit from having a "pool coach".

so mlb teams should just save money and fire their hitting instructors, pitching coaches etc...

i really see no differance btwn pro athletes. why do you make a distinction between pro pool players and any other athletes? or is your argument that pool isnt a sport and players are not athletes? anyone can benefit from coaching if you willing to listen. i understand its your opinion but what facts back you up?

I think while there are a few that could help pro players, most can't IMO. The pros know who could help them and who could not. In baseball and other sports there is no BCA cert. The players and managers just know and respect the ones that can help them. Johnnyt

I remember when Louie Roberts had a hypnotist with him to help him stay concentrated. He almost always played good so there might be a lot of things to help you improve. The best is to improve on your concetration.

sorry johnnyt i must be extra denser than usual today b/c i dont follow your argument. are you saying that coaches/instructors dont know enough to help pro players, or that pro players would not trust/accept coaching? or did i completely miss it?

brian

Don't mean to change the subject.......but........does anyone have any reports from Galveston? :D

Thanks,

Ray

I believe you had to have been a top pro to teach pros in pool. And yes most pros don't have the respect, trust, and confedince in a instructors is what I am saying also. I also said IMO I believe. It really doesn't matter or effect me in anyway. Johnnyt

Just got off the phone with JoeyA. He hung a ball in a pocket when he didn't plan to against Oscar and Gabe both. The difference in the swing games so he is out of the One Pocket. Unless he gets in some of the mini's or the night time action he is commentating for the rest of the events, not entered in anything else.

I just heard that the masters eight ball event was canceled. Anybody else hear that? That cuts my chances of making money in half if they did. I couldn't make it myself so I sent a stand-in that plays a wee bit better than I do.

Bustamonte won the challenge match against Hillbilly last night. Had to laugh when Cris dela Garza asked him how he was doing in the One Pocket. He just grinned a little and said sayonara. Shane and Danny Harriman, sounds like Buste went two and out. Everything unseeded makes for monster match-ups from the first matches.

Thanks for the update. Did he mention anything about when they
were going to use the tv table or whatever it is they have shown
two matches on?
thanks

apologies!

He did tell me upcoming plans but as usual we were talking about fourteen different things and I promptly forgot that info. Lil' John from Hattiesburg is scheduled for the TV table but I forget who he is playing or when. I think another match still had to be played before they knew who he was playing but I don't remember the players in that match.

Looks like Scott is announcing the start of a match right now but my sound is gone. aaargh!

Cliff Joyner and Brandon Shuff and of course there is no sound.

Comparing the mechanics of a baseball players swing/mechanics/fundamentals, or Scott Lee's "So I guess Tiger Woods using a coach EVERY WEEK has no value either, huh?" analogy to that of a professional pool players stroke/mecahnics/fundamentals has no bearing what so ever!!! The mechanics of a baseball, and especially a golf swing, are astronomically more complex than that of pool mechanics. Baseball and golf swings require full use of nearly every major muscle in the body on every swing. In baseball, throw in the fact that there are easily over 30 different type of pitches being thrown at you from 75-103 MPH. Golf, there are hundreds of course related factors that muddy the waters alone. Golf and pool mechanics??? Absolutely zero chance of comparing the two of those!!! In pool, you have a stroke arm that moves. Golf? Find me a body part THAT ISN'T a part of the equation..... Same with baseball...

Thanks Jam. I have always enjoyed the information that you have posted as well. You always have the 'inside scoop' for sure.

Here is the latest from Galveston:

They are starting the 8 ball tomorrow or Monday. I will check it out for you cuechick. From what I have seen, you would have done well here. You could have won a few in the pro 9 ball as well if your speed is the same or better than it was three years ago.

Send me a PM if you want and I will give you my px.

FYI Allison is undefeated. She beat Yu Ram in a very close one tonight. Yu Ram will play Ranola at 10 tomorrow am. There are no big names in Allison's way anytime soon, but a match with Vivian is a possibility before the finals. Allison is playing very good pool right now, and seems to be very relaxed.

Well, I appreciate your positive support. I just checked out the brackets though and it is harly a cake walk, they are letting a few pros/grand masters play. Ming and Christie Carter may not be current pros but they both were and are hardly amateurs. Also some strong regional players like Melinda Huang and Stephanie Mitchell. Kay sir rah... I am sure it would have been fun. Maybe next year!
