Follow or Draw

All things equal...same position for the next shot. Follow or draw? The draw shot is more sexy, but I seem to be more successful playing follow shots, especially judging the speed of the table. Ya gotta judge draw speed also. I love shooting mid/low outside spin on cut shot's..especially when the object ball is frozen, make it "crawl" down the long rail even past a side pocket like a caterpillar tractor.

But the follow shot is still more steady for me, all things considered.

Forward is the way to go with the old bucket pockets and smaller pockets that can be cheated a bit. If you notice since all of these tight-ass tables came along you see a lot more good players drawing the cb than going forward on shots they have to hit with a lot of speed. Johnnyt

If I could be rewarded with both shots, I would first assess the difficulty of each and speed that I have to hit it, traffic to get through, distance for the CB to travel and whatnot.

But all things equal, I would always favor follow. Much easier to gauge and is more natural CB wants to follow by itself, draw is to go against the force of physics of a forward moving object but imparting reverse momentum.

That's how I see things but even then, its always 51% - 49% at the very least for one or the other. Gotta pick the right one.

If its a bank I prefer a little backspin on the cue ball. I have noticed that the object ball comes off the rail better when I use low english.

But, using draw on a straight in shot can sometimes cause the ob to pop back out of the pocket. (depending on the table).

This is to situational for me to really pick one over the other.

It's by far easier for most players to control cueball speed with follow rather than draw. FWIW, I've never seen anyone lag for the break using draw.

Wouldn't it have the effect of a drag shot since we can't hit it so hard?

I laughed :)

This sounds like a good candidate for a poll...

As most will agree, it's easier to get position using follow. I will add, however, that you will get far fewer skids when using draw. The reverse spin on the CB imparts natural forward roll on the OB.

I dunno if that is the reason...I think the firmer hit ususlly associated w/ draw is the actual reason there are fewer skids.

Follow!
Draw for show, follow for dough. Draw for flash, follow for cash. Draw for the fool, follow is cool. Draw is for shmucks, follow for bucks. Draw for fame, follow for game. Draw for the babes, follow for Abes. Draw for beginners, follow for winners.
A little more seriously, follow is much more easy to control, but I find myself sometimes choosing draw and sometimes follow for the same shot! It's what feels right at that moment.

Follow shots not only offer easier speed control; they also offer better accuracy for most people. Several reasons are listed and supported with resources here:
