Foreign Players-Why are they here?

Its always being discussed how sad the state of pool is here in the United States. If this is so, why are so many foreign players moving here or at the very least spending a large amount of time here? I'm thrilled to have players such as Mika, Darren and others living here, just not sure what their reasoning would be if pool is so bad here.

Good post. I have often thought about this. I don't see how you could do it without a sponsor.

The gambling aspect of pool is bigger in the US than anywhere else. That has to be at least part of it anyways.

It might be that the living conditions in the United States are attractive.

Besides, our BCA supports foreign players now. Haven't you heard? :)

It's indeed sad, but it's worse elsewhere. The amount of tournaments with at least $1000 added in the state of California alone (or Texas) is probably more than many countries combined. They might not be living here, but rather traveling here more often than not. After currency exchange, a USD$5000 paycheck is a very good day for a lot of pool players from other countries.

Most of the players from other countries that spend a lot of time here have full international sponsors. It doesn't cost them anything to travel. They could make their home base anywhere. Johnnyt

That's true, but Thorsten doesn't gamble at all from what I know and Mika rarely gambles and when he does it's for small money and only if it's an absloute lock.

Nope. Only guy who gambles is Daz. Thorsten never gambles and Mika will but rarely. None of them are out there matching up enough to make any difference.

I like to they think come here because America is a pretty cool place. Also while we bag on the state of pool it is better here with more quality players than most places in the world. I know where I'm choosing to live if it's between the Philippines, Taiwan and the U.S.

There is a theme in recent times reflecting posters' thoughts on how great the state of pool is in the United States today. This is the second post within several days bringing up this topic. Hmm....

I'd love to talk to these same folks 10 years from now and see how they like pool, get their thoughts on the current state of affairs at that time. :)

Mika and Thorsten have been in the States for a long time. Darren's here cause his girlfriend lives in the States.

Personally I'm sick of all the b1tching and whining about how bad pool is because every person who picks up a cue can't make a living off the game.

I used to work in a factory that paid $30 an hour. It sucked hard. We had a saying when people would constantly complain "I don't see anyone chaining you to that machine. You can leave anytime you want. " One day I did just that. I see pool or any other pursuit the same way. If it's that bad why do the people who complain the most even stick around to b1tch about it? If something is that terrible to me I put it behind me and move on.

As an Italian ( bad )player, really I don't see a future in pool here. Is impossible to live with. Also the few European tournaments like eurotour pay very small. Where I live also don't exist any tournament even a local small tournament. Actually you American players don't know how lucky you are and it is why a lot of players come in USA. Also USA is a cool place to live.

I have read your thoughts on this topic in another thread. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Don't worry, JCIN, I'm not sticking around if you are referring to me. It reconfirms my thoughts about not traveling to Vegas this month. Thank you! :)
