Freddy The Beard Gets REALLY High Marks From George Fels

Georges column in the new BD says that Freddy's DVD Banks That Don't Go---But Do will have the student making shots he never even thought of shooting before.

High praise from a guy that knows his stuff. Congratulations Freddy! I'm buying it... the praise and the DVD.

I hate to give Freddie credit for anything, his hat size is already too big. BUT, the guy is one of the most knowledgeable and intelligent people I have met in all my years of roaming pool halls. He comes off like this street smart hustler. Believe me, Freddie is a well educated and quite refined "hustler". He just likes to project this personna like he grew up on the street. NOT!

What I'm trying to say is the man has an intellect to match his hat size. And a pretty darn good sense of humor to go with it! I will get a major ribbing for this post. :)

High praise indeed

Jim,
Thanks for posting about "The Beard" and his products. Nice to see him getting a little more praise for his contributions to pooldom. It is some great stuff!

I got both his books, the DVD set, even a shirt. The only thing I don't have that he made is some spaghetti & meatballs!

By the way, George Fels is top shelf himself. He's written some of my all time favorite stuff on that last page of BD. His works on Billy Incardona, Danny DiLiberto and Johnny Ervolino were exceptional pieces.

I agree with GF - the dvd is awesome - Freddy has a lot of great information that is DEADLY!!!

-Those that don't have this DVD will become the victims of those that do -

I have to agree with you Terry! For years that has been my favorite part of Billiards Digest. I enjoy the articles and such but George Fels' writing style has always impressed me he has a great sense of humor and he's a great storyteller. Jay also hit the nail on the head about Freddy, under that rough exterior is an intelligent guy. OK was that worth your ten bucks
Fred? Philw

The way I figure it he must be good and he must be DAMMED smart to have survived in the world he ran in. Jay said he was crazy to go some of the places he went but he went, played pool and walked out with the jelly beans.... as Fatty might say. Anyway... it's good karma to support old pool players. :D (that's said in a kidding around manner of speech... but it's the TRUTH. Those guys earned every penney we can spend on them.)

Freddy is great. I never knew how much there was to *real* banking until I picked up his first book, "Banking With The Beard." Holy cow, he opened up my mind to so much of the intricacy of what goes on bank pool. Believe it or not, I think my one pocket game went up at *least* 1.5 balls when I understood how contact-induced throw/english affected cut-banks at shallow angles and moderate speed.

Freddy somehow takes a very difficult subject (banks) and makes it completely understandable to laypersons such as myself. Better, he interjects stories of yore to keep it all interesting. He's brilliant for understanding it all, and for being able to relate it to pool players. I'm actually surprised that he divulged so much knowledge about banks; most pool players are so secretive about that sort of stuff. Kudos to The Beard!

Fred and George

I just left Red Shoes and guess who was banking? The beard himself playing on table 16.

George happened to be there too as he beat a guy in the straight pool league who was closing in on first place. George had to go to about 140 or so and the other guy was only going to 60 or so. No problem. Textbook perfect patterns by GF.

I have to agree with the poster who complimented his writing style. It is the first thing I look for every month in BD and this was true before I met him in this league. I read quite a bit of literature in college and George is no slouch when it comes to writing.

I don't bank much but I have bought the books and the dvds of Fred. The books mainly for the stories. I know plenty of bankers at Red Shoes who swear by his books.

Good post, Jim.

Good post, Jim.

Thanks Dennis. I sure envy you your pool playing associates! :)

I too go to the last page of BD and read it first. George's writing style is very enjoyable and his topics are always interesting.

Like you I have Freddy's books and the stories are wonderful. I'm anxious for the DVD's to arrive. I bought them yesterday after reading George's column. The power of George's print just put $50 in Freddy's one pocket :D

I'm going to get the DVD, it sounds really good. I read the digest once in a while but really don't like way fels writes. When someone passes away, his stories on them always include some of the negative habits these legends had. I guess I just don't like to read about that stuff after their gone. JMO

George is no slouch when it comes to writing.

Not a surprise, since in addition to being VP of Straight Pool at Chris's he's also a marketing professor at a well known local university.

Ok, ok, Jay,
those begrudging compliments earned you the spaghetti and meatball dinner that Terry Ardeno was talking about, (even tho you are blowing my cover). However, the only academy I ever attended was Bensinger's Billiard Academy (that was actually Bensinger's pool room's full name). Next time in Chicago stop in the infamous Bridgeport neighborhood for home-cooked grub.

the Beard

Thanks to all the other posters for their kind words also.
